Local Residents Attend Reception S Furniture Furnishings & Complete Home Appliances NEW- -USED An Idea For That Special Gift I Former Resident On Smokey's Com. Ed Schroeder, Oregon State Forester, was recently named to the committee which man ages Smokey the Bear's Carver. Schroeder is a member of the National Assn, of State Fores ters (NASF). He was named to the Cooperative Forest Fire Prevention Committee which administers Smokey’s business affairs and directs his fire prevention program. Smokey’s managers are a committee made up of repre sentatives of NASF, the U S Forest Service and the Na tional Advertising Council. They administer Smokey’s "patent,” granting approval for use of his name and image on commercial enterprises such as Smokey T-Shirts, piggy banks and stuffed toys. List year's royalties made Smokey over $360,000. This money is used to finance the Smokey Bear forest fire pre vention campaign. As a mem ber of the committee, Schroe der will approve Smokey's campaign for the 1975 fire sea son including ads, films, and educational materials. One of the biggest questions before the committee this year will be what to do with the real Smokey. The animal, whose life story has become a legend in fire prevention to children throughout the Unit ed States, is now in his declin ing years. Mr. Schroeder was also nam ed to the NASF Legislative Committee for the West Coast States, which will involve him in identifying Oregon’s for est needs to congressional representatives. In addition, Schroeder was placed on the forest fire committee which studies cooperative funding programs to offset local public costs for fire protection. On the fire protection analysis subcommittee, he will review a study of standards for needs in state and private fire protec tion throughout the United States. Schroeder is a local “boy,” the son of Herbert and the late Mabel Schroeder. He attended Mill City schools and was a graduate of the old Mill City High Schoo! and later gradu ated from OSU with a degree in forestry. He now lives in rural Salem where he is state forester.
