OUR HALLOWED HERITAGE On Highway Parking DETROIT—At the regular meeting of the Detroit City Council an amendment to ord inance 37 was passed by the council to prohibit parking of vehicles on the shoulders of highway 22 from 50 feet west of the westerly Breitenbush Road intersection to Santiam Ave.; or on any other intersec tion within the city limits which would create hazardous conditions to the flow of traf fic. Other council business in cluded a discussion on a plan ning committee to improve communication between the city council and the people. Sewer problems were also discussed. It was decided the council would contact the Corp of Engineers or someone else on sewer authority' to help find a solution to the problem. GEORGE WASHINGTON Nestled along the west bank of the Potomac, just a short distance from the nation's capital is an ‘illustrated page’ from American history—the hallowed ground of Mount Vernon. Seen majestically from the river below, the residence set atop the gently rising greensward of the river bank, punctuat ed by skillful landscaping and curving paths, seems to gain stature and dominance when viewed nearby from the entrance gate. The landscaping, gardens, trees and even some of the shrubbery still reveal the touch of the master gardener, sur veyor, soldier and statesman, George Washington. A leisurely stroll through Mount Vernon rekindles the fire of patriotism, whose glow has become diminished for many having freedom—and not appreciating its value. Not all of us have had the opportunity to visit this free dom shrine, but throughout the nation there are others with a similar story to tell. So when we mark the observance of Washington's birthday and recall his devotion and sacrifices, let's give thought also to another heritage—the Constitution, Snow Settles to 29 the document which has made possible many of the traditions we hold dear.
