Shirt waists and summer dress goods were greatly reduced last week and are going out very fast at the reduced prices. Large orders for fall goods are being placed. I have just received word that a large shipment of those Selz shoes is on the way; the great success with which I have met in selling Selz shoes has prompted me to increase the line for next fall. Only one week remains in which to secure tickets on the new $40 Rambler bicycle which / will give away on July 6th. This district adjoins that of the Rival Oil Co , in which W. L. War ren of thiscity has some stock, purchased at 50c a share, now worth $1. Mr. Mor gan is thoroughly acquainted with the oil history of California, and says that the long-time stock has made an average increase of value of $21) for every dollar invested. He is interesting local capi talists. Mr. Morgan is unhesitating in the statement that Oregon has the strata for oil and that its discovery in this state is sure to come. Mrs. Elisabeth Hutchinson brought to the office one day this week a copy of the local newspaper published in her old home town in Ireland, and pointed out a business advertisement that had appeared regularly in the same position for twenty-six years. As a result of the city conucil meeting held last Friday night it looks as if we are going to have electric lights after all. On the strength of the prospect, Mayor C. J. Edwards tendered hi« resignation, as a provision in the charter forbids one of his official position having a financial interest in any corporation doing regular contract work for the city. Carse, of the grocery firm of Carte & Burden, died Thursday of last week at the Good Samaritan hospital, after a long illness with stomach and heart trouble. He was born in Edin burg, Scotland. April 12, 1835. He early emigrated to America and 40 years ago settled in Yamhill county, Oregon, where in 1862 he married Nancy J. Hembree, who died some time ago. Mr. Carse lived on a farm near McMinnville for a number of years. For two terms in the ■70s he. was county superintendent of schools. The past four years he spent in Portland and in California, where he went in the hope of regaining health. His surviving children are Mrs. G. H. Fisk, of Oakland, California; Mrs. Perry Douglas. Everard H . Ralph L. and Ernest E., of Portland, and John W. of McMinnville. The funeral was held in the Christian church of thia city on Sat urday morning, conducted by Rev. A. J. Hunsaker. Deceased is spoken of by all his old-time acquaintances as a good neighlmr and friend, and an honest man. He was owner at one time of a portion of what is now F. J. Canfield’s farm. In bulk it is a larger exhibit than that of all the other states combined. It is the largest, most comprehensive and best selected commercial exhibition that has ever been made and is a credit to every man that is engaged in the lum ber industry. In weight Oregon’s woods, shown under such fine advantages at Buffalo, represent 120 tons, more than Ontario. Mexico. New York, New Jersey, Louisiana, Wisconsin. Missouri and Ida ho, the other exhibitors, can show. In itself this is a triumph. The visitor, up on entering the building—in fact before he enters it—is impressed with the vast ness and importance of the forests of the Pacific coast. The Curtiss Lumber Co., of Mill City, Or., have placed in the exhibit red cedar and yellow logs and a variety of commercial lumber.
