Hon. R. 8. Wallace of Salem, the en
terprising banker and popular citizen,
died at his home near that city Friday
evening, of pneumonia, after an illness
of a week. His death was unexpected.
The Statesman says: “Robert 8. Wal
lace was born at Cambridge, Ohio,near
ly 42 years ago, and received his educa-
cation at the Momouth, Ill., college.
Drom this college he graduated just in
time to enlist in tlie war of the rebel
lion, becoming a member of that part
of tlie army which was detailed to ser
vice on the Mississippi river. He re
mained in the war until all hostilities
had ceased. After the rebellion Mr.
Wallace made his home in St. Louis,
Mo., where, in connection witli his
brother, lie for a couple of years con
ducted a grain commission business.
Then he went to Chicago, where as a
seed merchant he acquired the begin
ning of what soon developed into a
large fortune. From the seed business
he went into the grain business, ship
ping large quantics of flax seed to
France aud Germany. In this business
he became possessed of wealth. In 1885
he came to Salem.
