A terrible mistake occuied in the shooting of the supposed Fete Olsen, the murdmer oi Mrs. Lyons, at Bakers field, California, last week. The man killed, and supposed to be Olsen, was a quiet sett ler named Seibert. Dispatches from San Francisco state that expres sions ol regret and indignation concern ing the fatal mistake in Kern county in the shooting of Michael 11. Seibert for Fete Olsen, are heard whenever the topic is mentioned. It is believed that Seibert resided only a sl.oit time in Napa county, as he was unknown to the oldest residents. It is supposed lie located pretty well up in tlie mountains, but not above the grazing region. He probably hud saved a little money, knowing the animosity of cattle men against “homestead inti miera,” and believed they intended to dispossess him. A fiery speech by l>r. McGlynn before the anti-poverty society Sunday even ing caused n great deal of excitement among the Catholics, Mondry. Most oi them held lie had taken grounds too fat advanced, and that there was danger of Ills being cut off altogether fiom the church. Many, too, held that lie had made a jieison.il attack upon tlm Arch bishop. To a cot respondent of the Portland Nows, Dr. McGlynn said Tues day: “If the Catholic church, that is to say th i Pope, speaking ex cathedra, should condemn thu doctiine which I in common with Henry George and otheis hold respecting the pri vate ownership of land, then I would repudiate the <ioc- trie.” Ex-Consul (ion. Denny, last year re- ceived the appointment of Foreign Adviser to the King of Corea, at th, salary of $12,000 a year. He recently found his position so disagreeable ow ing to the inirigue of the Chinese minis ter to Corea that he went to Tien Tsii. and had an interview with the Viceroy Li. They became apparent as soon as it was put in force, and this would lead to their correction by the time eongiess met. It will then be un derstood what corrections are necessary. On Sunday last, in New York city the saloons were closed, which never havi been before. The proprietors and bar tenders took a day off. In the big hotels there was a sori of tomb like resigna tion. Many faces showed that the lion hand of law had reached in high places as well as humble abode,. Theic were 13d excite arrests, which are about the average since the now movement began. In six precincts there were no arrests. The railroad commission met Tuesday at the state capital in regular monthly session. No special business was l>sn- Sacted, except a few bills were audited. Blanks were being piepared upon which railroad compatiiee are to prepare their annual statements to the secretary of state. No one was injured, but considerable damage was .lot e to b utldings. The shock was ac companied by a rumbling sound. Many clocks were stopped in the city, and the entire population fled to the streets terror-stricken. The court house cupola swayed like the mast of a ship in a tur bulent Bea, and the building seemed as lhough it were toppling over, When the shock struck Santa Catalina mountain great slices of the mountain were torn 1'iom its side and thiown to its base, Vast clAuds of dust rose above its crest, 7,000 feet above the sea level, at three different points from three to four miles apart. It was believed for some time that.a volcano had burst out of the crest ol the mountain. One towering peak, known as Old Castle, a prominent, land- maik from Tucson, has entirely disap peared. The extent of the damage can- mt lie told for several days. This was the first earthquake ever experienced in Tucson. The public school building rocked to and fro like a cradle, ami some of the plastering fell, creating the ut most consternation among the scbollars. School was at once dismissed for fear of a rt petition of the shock. It lusted, ac cording to the authority of a man who claims to have timed it, just lour min utes. One or two sligt vibrations have since been felt. The movement of the tremor was northweast. Shortly after the earthquake a volcano broke out twentv-two miles south of that place. The sky is brilliantly illuminated. VIA Oregon & California R. R. And Connections. Fare to San Francisco, $32; Sacramento $30.
