As w ith m ost o th e r m er chandise, th e re a re differences in q u ality of e le c tric a l appliances, the b e s t ones la stin g lo n g er th a n those o f in ferio r w orkm anship and m a te ria ls . T he useful life of all of them c a n be prolonged by re aso n ab le c a re in handling, and in sp ectio n from tim e to tim e w ill h elp to keep them safe. M ost of th ese fires occur w hen th e o p erato r h as le ft hom e w ith o u t disco n n ectin g the iron. W hen iro n s a re connected to so ck ets of p en d e n t cords, and a re co n tro lled by sw itch es in the sockets o r by w all sw itches, th e re m ay be no in d icatio n to show w hen th e cu r re n t is on or off, an d som etim es w hen one th in k s he is tu rn in g th e iro n off, he re a lly tu rn s it n. T he w ay to m ake su re th a t an iron is off is to d isco n n ect th e cord. So long as th e re d light shows, the ap p lian ce is co nnected to the circuit. A ppliances, especially flatirons, should be connected to convenience o u tlets in th e wall, ra th e r th a n to lam p sockets. P en d en ts a re usually designed fo r supplying lam p bulbs only an d th e p en d e n t w ires a re u su ally of too sm all cap acity to p ro p e r ly supply appliances. This is esp e cially tru e of the w ires used in living an d dining-room fixtures. T h e n ew er types of autom atic fl.ltirons h av e m echanism s w hich ♦ W o rk is progressing, under the c o n tra c t of th e Gilpin C onstruction C om pany, on the Hood R iver-W hite Salm on Bridge, raisin g of w hich w as m ad e n ecessary by the h ig h er level th e riv er will reach w hen backed up b y B onneville Dam. T h e present eleven concrete piers su p p o rtin g ten steel sp an s will be in c re a se d to 20 piers supporting 19 steel spans, and ex tending the W a sh in g to n approach alm ost 1000 fe e t fa rth e r from the river. On th e W ashington side, six new ste e l sp ans will extend steel w ork 1246 feet beyond the end of present steel. T hree new sp an s on the O re gon side will replace 624 fe et of pil ing. Piling, a new overhead ra il ro a d cro ssin g and a sh o rte r fill is to connect the bridge w ith th e E v e r g re en hig h w ay w ith an intersection o f 90 degrees. A lthough the Oregon approach will n o t be lengthened, the road leading to th e bridge will be raised 15 feet above its form er level. A t com pletion the altered bridge ■will slope tow ard each shore, from th e lift span, a t a one-degree grade. T h e bridge south of the lift span w ill not h ave to be raised except f o r a short, steep pitch n e a r the shore, but the W ashington approach m u s t be raised from its p re sen t 3%- d eg ree grade. T o en ab le the toll colector to op e r a te controls of the lift span, the to ll house will be moved to a point n o rth of the m oving section. I t fo r m e rly stood on th e Oregon shore. T h e raised span will**allow boats on th e riv er a 135-foot clearance above th e w a te r level at flood stage, i t is reported. G ladden w as an employee of the O regonian new s room, and w as born in Hood R iv er in 1915. Surviving are his p aren ts, Mr. and Mrs. George G ladden of W hite Salm on; his wife, C h arlo tte L aD ue; and a sister, Lois V irginia. W ith such a con n ectio n an y failu re of insulation w hich m ig h t c re a te a dangerous con d itio n will im m ediately be in dicated by th e blow ing of the fuse. As a seco n d ary precaution, it is ad v isab le to co nnect th e w ash er to a con v en ien ce o u tlet in the w all ra th e r th a n to a pendent socket, and th e o u tlet should have a cover p late of in su la tin g m aterial. A wall o u tlet can be co n tro lled by a wall sw itch, w hich is th e m ost co n v en ien t and safest arran g e m e n t.
