FRIDAY, DECEMBER 17, 1937 T H E North Woods Picture Coming To Rialto Sprejul across a background of the Dreath-taking scenic splendor of the great North Woods, the love story of a dashing army officer and a simple woods girl will come to the screen of the Ralto Theatre in Hood River, Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday, when "The Barrier," picturization of the famous novel by Rex Beach, opens with a cast of film favorites headed by Leo Carrillo, Jean Parker, James Ellison, Otto Kruger, Robert Barrat, Andy Clyde and Sara Haden. The action of the picture is built around the love story of James El lison and Jean Parker. Miss Parker is the daughter of Robert Barrat, who runs a trading post with his In dian wife (Sara Haden). Ellison is the lieutenant in charge of an Army post in the same district. The two meet and fall in love, although both Pool — Billiards What Finer Recreation? ♦ M archbank’s on Second Street H od River Cigarettes — Tobacco — Cigars B O N N E V I L L E of them are afraid that Miss Parker's Indian blood will prevent their mar riage. Leo Carrillo, a trapper, is also in love with Miss Parker, but keeps si lent when he sees that she loves the army officer. He tries to dissuade Barrat when the trader wants to break up the romance, but the lovers are finally separated. Finally the dying confession of a criminal (Otto Kruger) reveals that Jean is not half- Indian, but is the daughter of a prospector’s wife. Barrat had car ried the child off years before, and raised her as his own daughter. El lison, who had been prepared to mar ry the girl he loves in spite of all taboos, finds the road to romance is now clear, and they make plans for the wedding to the bitter happiness of Carrillo, who wanders off into tne winderness to try to forget Jean. Leo Carillo creates one of the most striking characterizations of his long list of successful roles in the part of Poleon, the French-Canadian trap per. His charm and vitality make the Canuck seem a living person. Jean Parker, who was so successful in another great outdoor picture, "Se quoia,” tops all her previous per formances in "The Barrier.” "The Barrier” offers the most im portant role James Ellison has had on the screen. He has played in the "Hopalong Cassidy” pictures, and he enacted the part of Buffalo Bill in "The Plainsman,” but this film offers him a far richer role than any other he has had—and the results would indicate that there will be more featured parts yet in store for young Mr. Ellison. He has one of the most pleasing personalities among the younger players in pictures to day, and a solid background of act- Rialto Theatre HOOD RIVER. FRI., SAT.
