After having spent the past four months visiting her three daughters and many friends in Indiana, Mrs. Job Sheppard returned home Saturday. Friends hope success and hap piness may be their portion in the new location. W. J. Holman has been quite ill. His brothers, E. M. Holman, of Hood River, and C. C. Holman, of Redmond, Wash., have been here assisting in the store. Vernon G. Henderson, of the high school faculty, motored to his home In Albany for the week end. He was ac companied by Miss Eloise Reed, also of the high school faculty. She spent the week end in Salem with her mother. Automobiles driven by CHHton Wood and D. W. Beers collided one evening last week. No one Injured, but consid erable damage to the cars involved. An automobile driven by orchard worker« who are in the valley tempor arily, wan struck by a train at tbe Odell' crossing of the Mt. Hpod R. R. Sunday afternoon. A woman r-fo"’ ger in the auto suffered a broken ankle and the car was pretty well demolished according to report immediately fol lowing the accident. Governor Pierce presented an elaborate array of figures to show that he had actually brought about a reduction of taxes levied for «tate purposes during hl« administra tion. He claims that the total decreese of state taxes in Hood River county under bis administration has reached 172,57111. Governor Pierce declared that those who have stated that he tore tax re ceipts in two during his cami*aign In 1922 and declared that he would reduce taxes in that manner were guilty of lying. The governor used just those words. He declared that be met •then end now that his work would toward bringing about a reduction state taxes on property. The governor reiterated hta faith an Income tax as a measure that will bring relief to property. He denounced the Dennis* resolution as inimical to the l>eet interests of the state. ”1 want rich men to come here to make their'homea just as much as any- otie," said Governor Pierce, “but I want them to bear their share of the bur dens. If they can”t do that then let them stay away." Governor Pierce cited his policy of working convicts at the state pent ten tlary as one of the benefits of bls ad ministration. He declared that all of the convicts are now working at tbe flax plant, the value of which to around »400,000. He said that a revolving fund of about 1100,000 will he avail able when this year’s products are sold.
