author, Bruce Dennis. Governor Pierce
presented an elaborate array of figures
to show that he had actually brought
about a reduction of taxes levied for
«tate purposes during hl« administra
tion. He claims that the total decreese
of state taxes in Hood River county
under bis administration has reached
172,57111.
Governor Pierce declared that those
who have stated that he tore tax re
ceipts in two during his cami*aign In
1922 and declared that he would reduce
taxes in that manner were guilty of
lying. The governor used just those
words. He declared that be met
•then end now that his work would
toward bringing about a reduction
state taxes on property.
The governor reiterated hta faith
an Income tax as a measure that will
bring relief to property. He denounced
the Dennis* resolution as inimical to
the l>eet interests of the state.
”1 want rich men to come here to
make their'homea just as much as any-
otie," said Governor Pierce, “but I want
them to bear their share of the bur
dens. If they can”t do that then let
them stay away."
Governor Pierce cited his policy of
working convicts at the state pent ten
tlary as one of the benefits of bls ad
ministration. He declared that all of
the convicts are now working at tbe
flax plant, the value of which to around
»400,000. He said that a revolving
fund of about 1100,000 will he avail
able when this year’s products are sold.
Governor Pierce expressed belief that
the penitentiary can be made «sli
tting.
