Mr. Stone states that a Portland branch office will probably be located at once. The shipping concern and growers do not anticipate any difficulty in securing help. Pickers will receive 12 cents per carrier, and packers will be paid 20 cents per crate. A bonus of three cents per carrier will be paid to all pickers who remain throughout the Season, and packers will receive a five cent bonus. Although the harvest will n it begin in earnest before the latter part of next week, transients are al ready drifting in seeking work. WOMAN'S CLUB NEWS The Woman's club has contributed $51) towartl improvement of a bathing beach northwest of the city. The women will ask the cooperation of the Commercial club. Plans call for a footbridge across a Blough and bath huts. It is proposed that signs, calling at tention of motor tourists to bathing facilities be placed at the new automo bile camping park. ( arson Resigns From Council .1. K. Carson has resigned his posi tion as city councilman. A. S. Kelt has been appointed bv Mayor Scobee to succeed Mr. Carson, who has left for Jefferson, near Albany,-where he will be employed as a superintendent for the Kibbe Construction Co. in laying 20 miles of pavement. Upper Valley Koad Work On County Engineer Cruikshank has been employed with a ciew of men the past week setting stakes in the Paik dale vicinity, where a number of heavy grades will be cut down. Several con crete bridges will also be constructed. The eltiiena of the Upper Valley have donated a considerable sum of money toward highway construction.
