When a Liberty Motor i. giving its utmost to push forward a Liberty plane, the result to the ear at least, is a noise which would hardly be welcome in the reading room of a public library. or under your window when you want to sleep. Such is the voice of gasoline raised in protest against being introduced to the little spark of electricity which jumps across the spark plugs 1H5 times every second ; but the protest is in vain for the "juice" keeps coming; 1G5 times each second, y'JOO sparks per minute, 594,000 times in an hour, com ing from a little innocent looking box full of lead and acid and water and rubber, stowed away in the fueelage out of sight but never out of the mind of the man whose life depends upon it. lhe storage battery is the soul of the Liberty Motor. As gasoline is its food, steel and aluminum its clothing, so is electricity itB spark of life. Without that spark it is an inert mass; with it the Liberty Motor is a source of magnificent power. The Willard Storage Battery Com pany for which Max L. Moore is county agent, had in Cleveland for years been making storage batteries for starting, lighting and ignition on automobiles. When Uncle Sam decided he would "take no more non sense" from the Kaiser, the Willard Organization whs asked to design a storage battery for ignition in an air craft motor. The first difficulties faced were the necessary limitations on size and weight, as Uncle Sam's specifications called fur a battery of a certain capac ity weighing not more than ten pounds. Any motorist who has tried to lift his storage battery, knows what it weights. Lead, the very name sounds heavy, makes up most of the storage battery, and ten pounds of lead is not verv much. The Willard engineers set to work and designed a battery of the proper -capacity, weighing' but ten ponnds and two ounces, which was sat isfactory to the Government designers. Hut size and weight were not the only obstacles. An automobile proper ly driven stays on its wheels ana there is no danger of the acid contents of the battery spilling out. Hut a Liberty Plane must operate just as well "head over heels" as any other way, and the Willard engineers found that they must design a battery which, while open at the top, did not spill its contents when inverted. This sounds rather difficult. and it w as, but it was done just the same. Within ten days from the receipt of the ( overnment's specifica tions, the Willard engineers had de signed and perfected a battery which met the government's needs as to ca pacity, size, weight, and this battery operated upside down. This battery was adopted and never since has it been changed in any detail. Scenic Points Will Get Names At the instance of C. A. Bell, the Hood Kiver tlame I'rotective Associa tion has started a campaign for nam ing the numerous scenic points of in terest to tourists in the vicinity of the Valley. With J. W. West, AI. Cruik shank and Mr. Bell, appointed as a committee, all spots of interest will be searched out and appropriately marked with neat signs. The signs will show the motorist over the Columbia River Highway places that are worth stop ping to see. They will appear along all Valley roads. Mr, Bell, who says he noticed while on a visit to Canadian resorts that every nook was named, has already christened the highest eminence between here and Mosier. He has called it Mount Kibbe, and has had a neat sign painted for its desig nation. Duckwall Will Build John G. Duckwall, associated with a brother VV, S. Duckwall, of Indian apolis, Ind., in Udell orchards, has for the paat several years marketed his own crop and that of neighbors, ship ping to Indianapolis and eastern mar kets. Mr. Duckwall will enter the export trade this year, having been appointed Odell buyer for a British concern. Mr. Duckwall will begin work next week on a receiving warehouse and storage plant at Odell. The new structure, 36 by 12 feet, will have a capacity for storing eight carloads of apples. Joseph Novachek, of IVrtland, will be architect. Gas Famine Last Week Joy again prevailed among Hood Kiver motorists Saturday. After a week without a shipment of gasoline, the famine was broken by arrival of a tank car Friday night, and the local dis tributing station of the Standard Oil Co. was busy Saturday refilling tanks i of garages and service stations. The tank car left the Portland plant j of the oil company Monday. Whesitj failed to arrive here a tracer was ; started, and the fuel was found on a ! siding in the Albina yards, hidden from view by other cars. Today Gladys Brockwell. the popular Fox star, will be presented in "The Forbid den Koom ;" also a two reel Fox Sun shine comedy, "His Musical Sneeze." Friday and Saturday Clara Kimball Young will be shown in her latest select picture, "The Koad Through the Dark"- another f those wonderful plays starring this beautiful actress ; also a two reel l.KO comedy and a Bray l'icto. Sunday We will present an unusually good Paramount feature together with a PatheMieview and a Screen Magazine. Monday and Tuesday Fannie Ward, star of "The Cheat ;" "F.ach Pearl a Tear" and innumerable other screen successes will be shown in her greatest success "Common Clay," the screen adaptation of the famous book and play. Also a "Topics of the Day" and a "News Weekly." Wednesday and Thursday The second offering of the North west Exhibitors Circuit, namely, J. Stuart Blackton's wonderful screen story "A House Divided," a screen adaptation of Kuth Hell Bucicault's famous novel "The Substance of His House" featuring the two popular stars, Herbert Kawlison and Sylvia Breamer. Manager W. M. lilack reports that the concern whs receiving an approximate IS, 000 pounds of butter fat a year ago each month. The deliv eries for last month exceeded 7,00(1 pounds. Through the cooperative arrange ment the local growers receive slightly more per pound for their butter fat than is paid by Portland creameries. Aeroplane Sighted Here A visitor to Hood River last Thurs day afternoon would have found babies deserted, stores and residences vacated and the population out with heads thrown back, their eyes on an aero plane sailing serenely up the Columbia gorge at about a 4,000 feet elevation. The coming of the machine was not' iced first by Frankton residents, who spread the alarm, and with telephone messages heralding the coming of the plane, local residents poured out of doors to see the machine, the second that has ever soared over the Valley. It is thought that it was one of the forestry service fire patrol machines. , Pioneer Dies in Seattle Relatives and friends have just had news of the death in Seattle of Simon Frazier, aged 74, pioneer shipbuilder of Astoria and The Dalles. Mr. Frazier, who came from New England by way of the Isthmus of Panama, first en gaged in shipbuilding at Astoria, and later removed to The Dalles, where he constructed some of the old boats of the Steam Navigation Co. He came here, purchasing one of the first plots to be sold on the old Belmont townsite, on the West Side. Mr. Frazier, Tin uncle of Joseph Fra zier, city marshal here, had lived in Seattle 28 years.
