CHAPTER MASONS ENTERTAIN VISITORS Having two teams ready to receive the Royal Arch degree. Hood River Chapter No. 27, R. A. M., convened in siwcial session at 2 o'clock, Friday, Nov. 15, and conferred the degree on Harold Heishner. J. O. McLaughlin and George Sheppard. The work was well performed and made a deep and lasting impression on the candidates who expressed them selves as greatly pleased. By invitavion cf the Hood River chapter Washington Chapter, No. IS, of Portland arrived at 6:20 p. m., 33 strong. They were met at the depot by a delegation of the Hood River com panions and escorted to the banquet room of the Masonic hall, where all partook of an excellent chicken dinner, after which they repaired to the lodge room, where visitors conferred the Royal Arch degree on E. F. Straheeker, of Chi cago. After the ceremonies of initiation Companion E. G. Jones, acting; King, delivered the Royal Arch lecture in a masterful and deeply impressive man ner, showing that he possessed marked ability as a speaker and was a careful student of higher Masonry. Each offi cer performed the work assigned to him so thoroughly that it was indeed a most impressive service in every par ticular, filled with valuable instruction 1 and creating a worthy desire for the higher and nobler things of life. Wash-1 ington Chapter, by reason of the high standard of its members and quality of its work is a credit to the fraternity : and has the sincere appreciation and lasting gratitude of Hood River Chap-' ter, for its invaluable assistance in the work of this occasion. After the clos ing of the chapter all again repaired to the banquet room and partook or a midnight lunch, at which among other good things were served, some of Houd Kiver s famous apples, lhese in par ticular seemed to be greatly appreciat ed by the visitors. An hour was spent i in recreation, felicitations and story telling in which several, including. 11. P. Carson, distinguished themselves. At the close of these pleasures all again repaired to the lodge room where the visitors initiated all comers into the mysteries of two side degrees which, while they could hardly be called Masonic in character were en joyed by all and the degree of Bucking ham in particular made such lasting impressions on the initiates that some of them declare that this degree is still being constantly brought - to their minds and cannot easily be forgotten. Indeed, the vislit of Washington Chap ter No. 18 is one of the happy events of fraternal intercourse that will ever be cherished by the members of Hood Kiver Chapter, No. 27. Local Horses for City Fire Department As every one knows it takes a per fect horse to pass the tests made by a big city fire department. J. W. Mc Donald recently took a pair of big greys belonging, to the Bonboro Orch ard Co. to Porltand, where they were taken on trial by the fire department of that city. The big animals, which were purchased in eastern Oregon by C. R. Bone, have been used in land clearing and orchard cultivation at Boneboro and Central Vale. They were in the pink of condition, and Mr. Bone received a letter last week saying the horses had been accepted and that they bade fair to become prize animals of the fire teams. The orchard company has a team of blue ribbon bays. Ross Crane Pleases Audience Unquestionably the best number so far given on the U. B. Lyceum course was that of Ross Crane, given last Thursday evening. Mr. Crane, who is ! an artist in his particular line of en tertainment, kept his audience well ; amused for nearly two hours. His : drawings, which were very good, were accompanied by a steady now of witti cisms and terse statements. His clay i modeling was done in a manner which ' left no cause for criticism, and his musical numbers were mirth provok ing. Altogether it was an evening well spent, and the patrons will look 5 forward with anticipation to the next number, which comes early in January. Slocom Exhibits at Portland One of the handsome exhibits at Portland this week in conjunction with the Country Store of the Commercial club, wherein is displayed the agricul tural products of the valley, is the pho tographic panorama views sent down by the Slocom Book and Art store. The book and art store company have just completed two more panorama views of the orchard districts, one of them from Summit looking over the Odell district toward Oak Grove, and the other taken from an emincnece back of Odell. Cooper Morris Paroled W. Cooper Morris, convicted and sent to the state penitentiary for bank wrecking in Portland, has been paroled by Governor Oswald West on recom mendation of the orison board. Mor ris, who if his behavior is good during the parole it is believed will shortly be pardoned, has been working on the Hood River-Portland highway at Camp Benson. School and Home Association The next meeting of the School and Home Association wiM be held Friday evening at the high school building at 7:45 o'clock. Dr. Luther Dyott, of Portland, will give an address on "A New View of Boy Life.," All patrons of the schoolsjare urged to be present. The annua) fee of 25 cents is now due.
