Over-nroduction of marketable ap ples in Oregon will .never be a con tingency to recaon wmi, m-ti ium . H. M. Williamson, secretary ui uiu State Hoard of Horticulture, in me course of his address given recently at the Portland Y. M. C. A. Mr W I inmson said there is no wound for the fears of some that the people oi tnis state are piamuiK iw arge an acreage or appies. nc com that the foreign market lor apples raised in this state and other i'acinc Coast states is growing in large pro- nnrtinnM annual v. and is bound to in crease rapidly. He was of the opinion that with the completion and opera tion of the l'annma Canal, the market for apples in this section of the United States will be world wide in extent. "We should not exnect to get fancy prices for our apples, such.as we have obtained in the past," said Mr. Wil liamson. "Apples at $2 a "box are too high, and, oi course, tne uemanu win be limited as long as tne price tht hiirh. "Our market in Jthe future must be created among the middle class. We must, therefore, be content to sell our products at a price that will be attrac tive to the masses, and vet give us reasonably fair returns. People .who earn from $1000 to $1500 a year will be the ones who will buy our apples, Thrv constitute the masses both in this country and Europe. I am pos- tive we can raise apples in Oregon to supply that class of people, and tne returns will be such as to make apple-raising still the most pro fitable, industry in Oregon. "Within tVip next few vears. Con- tinental Europe and the English pos sessions will take all the apples we can ship, provided we are satished to ac cept reasonable prices for the pro ducts." Mr. Wil hamson said it was a mis take to believe that Spitzenburgs and Yellow Newtowns Pippins were the onlv two commercial varieties that should bo raised. He said that certain varieties grew to better advantage in different districts and that each fruit crowinc district should make a special- tv of the kinds which do the best there tor instance, the Northern Spy, does well in the Willamette Valley, and fails to treach the same standard east of the Cascade Mountains. On the other hand, the Winter Banana, raised at a hitrh altitude and in a dry climate, such as in the district above The Dal es, irives better satisfaction than if raised on the west side of the Cas cades. The sneaker was of the opinion that yellow apples were better adapted to the Willamette Valley than red apples. Colored apples, he said, reached the createst deirrce of perfection where there were longer periods oi sunsmne throughout the growing season. Mr. Williamson s remarks were more particularly directed to the Oregon apple men in general and will not hold wholly true lor eacn section oi the state. In Hood Kiver the price for the best apples will never go much bi-lcjw ' a box if the growers will adhere strictly to the high standards of grading and packing which they have set themselves and the world. Whenever they neglect these things the prices will take a bad slump. Hood Kiver apples can always be sold to the high class trade which is willing to niiv a fani'v nrice for an extra fancy i.iuuluot a growers keep up their own pace already set. bpitzenburg and Newtowns are the apples which do better in Hood Kiver than any other nlace in the- world and Hood Kiver should not neirlect them. Further more, they are the two varieties which have the highest rank and bring the highest prices. f WE HAVE JUST RECEIVED A FRKKII SUPPLY OF Yj iwiirif in ii i si iiiiii imr in n i i i n lllll Ulv VI JvUU i'aMa w AND ALL KINDS OF FERTILIZERS COMK TO US DIRECT FOR W00D-FIBERED HOUSE PLASTER CEMENT AND LIME AS WE UNLOAD DIRECT FROM a THE CARS 5TRANAHAN & CLARK Hood River, Oregon 30 H HOOD RIVER ABSTRACT CO. A correspondent writes lo ask if we look for any apple box legislation dur ing the coming session of Congress. '- J We do not. The short session which convenes in December next will concern itself only with appropriations, the completion" of the labor and anti-injunction bills proposed last year, the establishment of a permanent tariff board and other unlinished business. Legislation appertaining to the fruit industry, while it may be referred to, is not likely to be pressed, because it would be a very dillicult matter to obtain action upon it during the fewj months which the Congress will be m session. - Kruit Trade Journal.
