Beach, census enumerator for Portland, tells of an interesting ex perienee in m. Louis when passing 'nrougn mat place last week. "I missed mv connection." said Mr Beach "with the Western train out of St. Louis, owing to a wreck in Ohio, and to pass away the time before the Coast train left, I walked down in the fruit selling section of the city, stopped in front of ore stand where something like 30 different varieties were shown for sale. They were the products of Arkansas, Texas, Missouri, Iowa, and Kansas. I asked the atten dant if he had any Oregon apples." " 'Oregon?' he asked, after scratch ing his head, and evidently doubtful as to whether it was the name of a South Sea island or that of a cider factory. " 'Yes,' said I. " 'No, we have no Oregon apples,' was his reply. 'We have the best apples in the world on our stand across the street. They can beat the what you call it - Oregon apple all to smithereens.' " 'What are they called?' I asked. " 'Why,' and here he looked sym pathetically at me as if pitying me for my ignorance, "they are the Hood River npple. "I did not even enlighten him," con eluded Mr. Beach. m Olympic makes good Dressed in "Black and Yellow" Not "Football Colors" but the color of the carton containing Foley's Honey and Tar, the beet and safest cough remedy for all coughs and colds. There is a display of Hood River apples in Baltimore this week in the windows of one of the prominent retail stores of that city. The Baltimore Orchard company, which recently bought the J. O. ONE SpItZENBURG FEEDS 24 PUPILS In times of famine Hood River Spitzenburgs might prove a good sub stitute for the loaves and fishes of liiblical story, according to the way one was used to feed a crowd of Phil adelphia school children. A short time ago Wilbur Hoyt, small son of C. from em Hoyed in the United States Mint and ought a ranch near Summit, sent a big red Spitzenburg back to his former school teacher; in the Quaker cuy. lhe lad received a etter thnnkinc him for the apple a few days ago and the teacher said that the 5 annle nan oeen cue into nieces and 24 nf h former school mates had feasted on the Hood River fruit. Taylor, nomolotrist of the United States DonHrtmpnt ture, adives specializing in the orchard" business as practically necessary to success, ne siaies Droaa v that, so far as his knowledge extends, no eftort to combine fruit raisinpr in a commercial sense with general farm ing lias proved successful. That is to say, in all such attempts the orchard has been swallowed up, so as to speak, in the grainhelds, meadows and other adjuncts of general farming. Sooner or later the tree crop has been sacir heed to the truck crop, the cerals, the grass or me livestock. The owner. naving jaiien inio siacK memocls in caring for his orchard, the trees became nonproductive as far as mar keting fruit was concerned and the effort to raise fruit relaxed and was finlly abandoned. The owner, under these conditions, believes firmly tha fruitraising does not pay. 1 The Willamette Valley abounds in evidences of the facts herein set forth. Ihere is, it may be said in defense of the delinquent orchardists of this section, good reason for the decadence ot pioneer orchards in the fact that when these gnarled, mossgrown, pest infected trees were young, vigorous and free from fruit tree pests and bore the finest of apples in great abundance and with relatively little care, there was absolutely no market for their product. Apple growing with its wonderful possibilities fell ;into decline in the early years only to be revived after it had become a science, through the necessity the later years developed of fighting pests that prey upon orchard trees and find lodgment in their fruits. Transportation facilities preceded this development and indeed made it possi ble, inen me wonders of the River valley in fruit culture disclosed. Oregonian Ediorial. Hood were Shall Women Vote? Spencer expects to have it installled in a very short time. As a result of the accident to the engine a new cylinder, crosshead and pitman, as well as several other parts, have been cast and will be placed in the steamer and she will be put in shape so that she can be placed on the run again next spring if necessary.
