Cauiphell leturue.i Sunday from Cbioaifo, where he and Joeepn A. Wilson hua charge of the the Hood River exhibit at the reueut atiou.il Land show, it was the policy of tne llood Kiver repretieutstlveB to tell pen pie interested the exaot sltuatiou lu this part of the oountry and they were careful not to overstate the tacts. "The Hood Hirer display," snid Mr. Campbell, "had the reputation throughout the show ot exaot honesty. We did not have laud to sell aud we did not have apples to sell aa did many of the representatives trouj dlt ereut parts of the west. We did not even keep a list of the people who were interested and we referred tbetu to no real estate men. We told them the truth about Hood Kiver, about conditions lu various paits of the valley uud invited them cordially to oome out and see the oouutry, assur ing them that they would receive fair and honest treatment at the bauds ol our people. "Our method of dealing wltb the visitors to the show lead them to have ooutldeuoe in wbat we told tbew uud many of them came to us because they had been told we would tell them the truth. We did uot knock other localities and wbeu asked out candid opinion ot the other places, we gave it, whetbei It happened to he good or bad. Every bouy with wbom we talked seemed to pieter Hood Kiver, although we did not have some of the higb-souudiiig atones which were beiug dealt out by tbs reul estate exhibitors from other louaitles. We told tbeui thut there were no gold pieces growing on the bushes out there aud that if there were the bushes wouldjall be ooruered by this time. However, we did explain the extent of the undeveloped laud in tne valley, wbicb would make them good profits in apples. "One man came to talk with me tour times aud the ttf th lime he told me that be wauted to oome out, to liood Mver right away but that sick ness in bis furuily would pimveut his coming west for two ot three mouths. tie wauted to place money in tbe bauk out heie and have me pick out a good farm for him, but 1 told him 1 could not do it as there was a pos sibility that he might uot be entire H satlslled. 1 urged blm to lake run out here as soon as possible and look tbe Held over for himself. "One of the best-posted truit men in Chicago told me that the methods we used would bring more net uoou results to the Hood Kiver valley than any other display or all the other displays combined would briug lor their localities. We did uot try to maae Hood Mver look cheap and wt1 would tell tbe peuple t'e advantage ul coming into the valley with several thousand dollars to invest rather than a tew huudred. We told of tbe euvi roumeut which they would Uud auu of tbe peculiar advantages which they would Ilud here. We assured them tbat Hood Klver did uot foster any get rich -quick artists and they ap preciated seeing an exhibit where tbe prime object was not to unload a few acres of laud onto tbem. Many people who bad beard or the famous tloou Kiver valley were surprised that there was any Uud tor sale here at all. "The people visited tne show In immense cruwds, not only fiom Chi cago, hut from all tbe middle states. l.ioy weie interested in tbe west auu they wanted to hear about it. At Ural we were u little disappointed uot to gel on the main floor of the show, but after a few day a we saw that we bad an advantage because we hud a chance to talk to tbe peuple who came auo ba 1 a real iuterest lu learuing of tbe country. "Of course our apples were far and away better than anything else at the show and people whu knew apples ap preciated tbat tact und told us so. hsd prsctioally the only exhibit of Spitzenl ergs, NewtowiiH and Oitieys, ms tbe other distilots were represented ci. idly by the cheaper varieties. 1 h Chicago people are accustomed to tbe (Irimes buldeu aud the Jonathan at. their best apples, aud H was easy to see a Urge market for Hood Kivei i mi there wtieu we are able to supply i hem. 1'hey were a bit surprised to learn that oui Hppleu were all sold In New York a month oi so before '.t.t.y weie t 1 1 "ii from the trees. "It wus the tl i at time Chicago had Diet been put next to the real thing hi the apple line, and 1 believe thtft pa bad no less than a hundred deal era, both wholesale and retail, ap proach and otter to liiy the whole carload. Stelnhardt .V Kelly disposed cf the apples t i the UibtOO Pratt Co., and I believe that lirm had nearly all of tbem sold around th : mark be fore the show was over. Mr. Uil.aon showed us a great ninny cnurtesiet during our stay iu Chicago, and we appreciated very much the way in wbicb he treated us. "Many people who had paid a dime f r an apple which did uot look very good to us, would oome along aud tri to buy a Hood Kiver sppls. We t'.ld tbem that we, would gladly give them away if we bad any to spare. Our diaplay outclassed the other districts which were represented tn such a de gree tbat we were given u universal repeot. We were the only represen tatives from all ol Oregon, while all of tbe other western stntes were repre seDtud by many displays. We held up the honor of Oregon with regard to apples but tbe state would have gained much by being represented b) other products, ihe show wss the biggest thing ot the sort evei pulled off, find will result In Incalculable benefit to the whole west. "Mr. Wilson and myself were dele gates to tbe Laud Congress which was meeting in Chicago about the same time We went to tbe congress and expected to stay but a tew minutes. When we banded in our credentials and people found we were from Ore gon, it took us au hour or so to get away, as there is an intense Interest 'u this state throughout the east, and to tact the inteiest seems tn be focus log on Oregon. " Ou bis return, Mr. Campbell visited in Oskalousa. Iu., and Urookston I Mirn. Mr. Wilson went on east where he will spend -cv. ml weeks betore re turning to Hood Kiver. Valley Electric Meeting.
