The HOOD RIVER APPLES need do introduction to tbe trade; tbey re, without any doubt, the very tin et Apple grown in the world. The Messrs. STEINHARDT & KEL LY desire to particularly impress up on the mind of tbe trade that the HOOD RIVER APPLE GROWERS' UNION ii composed of ninety per cent of tbe Apple Growers of tbe Val ley and that tbey own and control practically ninety-two per cent of the output of the HOOD RIVER section tbe other eight 01 ten per cent being in tbe bands of several shippers, wbo do not narvset their crop through the Union. Tbe pack this year will, without queslon, be tbe finest ever put up by tbe UNION, tbeir fancy grade, which will be practically oil bandied by us, oousistlug absolutely of perfect apples only, and will be packed in tbeir ill imitable style. Tbe Messie. HI KM I AUDI & KELLY, 101 Purk PIi.ce, N V. KILLED TEN BEARS NEAR WHITE SALMON Rears are numerous at Hoar Valley between Hitsum on tbe White Salmon river and Trout Lake. A party of Portland and Trout Lake hunters were there bunting lust week and kill ed teu bears, among them a large cin namon bear weighing DUO pounds, suyi Tbe Dalles Chronicle. D. E Witt was captain of tbe party of nine and tells some thrilling atoiies oouoerning the obase wbicb lasted from Wednesday until iaat Sunday. In the party were representative of tbe Union Meat oompany of Portland, two Hood River men, Rutus Uyrkett cf White Salmon, (Jeorge Fish, mas ter of tbe bounds at Hosum, Fred (Jutlip, Frank Moore aud D. E. Witt of Trout Lake, and well known in this city. Tbe bunten camped at a logging plant on tbe White Salmon not far from a forest of oaks wheie there are tons of acorns which are relished ty bruin. "A Bleep hill Is Immediately back of tbe forest," siad Mr. Witt, "and three deer aud bear trails came down the bill to the river. We stationed Young of Portland ou tbe bill near one of tbe trails, so that in tbe dears log be could easily pick off any bear that came down the trail. We were down below but oould see Young eas ily. We sent the twouty-Qve bounds skirmishing through the woods and soon a bear came down the trail, noar where Young was stationed. He stepped behind a tree, until tbe ani mnl came lumbering down the hill, then stepped nut, aud as he did so, tbe bear stopped and both looked at one another tor about live minutes when Young concluded to tire at tbe animal. "A soon as be flred tbe big animal came rapidly to where we were Young never bit it and one of our party killed tbe bear. There was someblug doing every minute. I have never aeon the woods so full of game game of all kinds. "Why," oontlnued Mr. Witt, "there were deer in abundance but we oould not touch them as we had dogs, and deer are not allowed to be hunted with dogs. We killed teu bears aud wounded several that crawled oil somewhere and died. "All we killed wore very tat and tbe moat waa sweet and good. Tbe Portland fellows took several pelts home wltn them to have niRrie i 'it o rugs. One big clnuamon tear whh killed, lis was a splendid looking animal. We never had such sport iu our lives." Mr. Witt says tbe party Is anxious to take another buntiu trip in tbe near future. Among the bin indu-trle that will bring gold to Hood liivnr'i bank deposit is tbe Hunter lju.iuejp, and in Ibis connection it might le said tbat few people ot Pottluiid cr Iu tbe state of Oregon are ame of I the tart that one of tl.n iui pleuant pleasure trips is a visit to the mwii.ill and camps of the Mauley su i n num ber compauy 11 miles nortbwebt uf Hood River. Far up among tbe red fir and wbite rine forests this enm- j pany bn established one t tbe model lumber plauts or toe ravine coast. Tbe sawmill basa capacity of K0,0U0 feet daily. It Is wbnt is called a double mill aud ba seven large boil eta. Ibis company bas three lumber camp and two planing mills, witb men on tbe payroll. In a seven month run they have cut 21000,0U0 feet of lumber. Ibe moat peculiar thing about this tlautls its method of tiansportation. Flumes aie built for miles through the great forest, where eight donkey euigue with Ion wire cables diuw tbe logs from deep canoyn or bigb mountain sides aud plaoe them in tbe flumes where they are floated to the mill. The little stream tbat mpplies the flume wltb water and oarriea tbe mammoth logs to the mill Is still further preyed in to service aud carries the lumber iu another flume for 11 miles to tbe rail road. Tbl plant 1 located at an elnvatiou of 2,500 feet, and for two trcnths In tbe winter tbe suo is too deep for logging. This body of timber seems to be almost uulimited ; It will aver age about .'10,000 feet pur acre and reaches back for many miels from tbe railroad. This Company mukr s a re olalty of bridge aud couHtructiou tim bers and railroad ciowstip, while their better grades of lumbei are blpped largely to Chicago. To the lumbermen tbe toretts have always been a mine, both iu the sense of wealth producer aud iu the man ner of their exploitation.
