HOOD RIVER GLACIER. THURSDAY, OCTOBER 29 1908. Threo 1 EVENTS IN OREGON : Alli-ge Crooked Dealings. Portlani A petition praying that the Albany Farmers' Company, of Linn county, be declared bankrupt, was filed last week before the United 8tates court. The petition was filed by the Eugene Mill & Elevator Com pany, and the allegation ig made that the Farmers' Campany disposed of oata and wheat stored by the owners in their warehouse and that the Farmers' Company defrauded the owners by disposing of the oats and wheat and refused to give an ac counting. The petition sets forth that the Farmers' Company recently disposed of a portion of its assets by selling property to Albert Freer 8ken. William Long, a grain buyer, also makes a serious charge in the pe tition. He claims to have lost 873 bushels of oats. Mr. Long says he sold his warehouse receipt to J. R. Baltimore and that when this re ceipt, signed by the Farmers' Com pany, was presented to the bank on which it was drawn, payment was refused. R. A. McLogan also joins In the suit. He alleges he stored 1887 bushels of wheat, that it was sold and no accounting made. . Throe Months for Stealing an Apple. La Grande Peculiar freaks in Justice were exemplified in one in stance here in which an illiterate Austrian was the victim. Through the apparent oversight on the part of a justice of the peace in Elgin, this Austrian was held in the county Jail for nearly three months on a charge of stealing an apple. The In dictment which caused his arrest In Elgin three months ago specified that he stole the one apple, and the jus tice of the peace bound him over to await the action of the circuit court grand jury. Last week the Jury dis posed of the poor fellow by dismiss ing the charges. Until a week ago the foreigner was of the opinion that he was serving sentence. When final ly some one managed to impress upon his mentality that he had not yet been sentenced and was liable to a state prison penalty his physical health failed him and he collapsed. Authorities have been forced to add additional cost to the board bill by calling in a physician to attend him. Portland Wireless to Hawaii. Portland The Council Crest sta tion of the United Wireless Tele graph Company was in communica tion Saturday night with Kahuka Point, Oahu, just west of Honolulu. It is claimed this establishes a 'new record for long-distance telegraphing by wireless. The station at that point has recently been established, and the messages received at Coun cil Crest "were the first from Oahu to the Coast. Congratulations were exchanged by the operator, J. M Swetser, of the local station, and Arthur A. Isbell, of Kahuka Point, superintendent of construction for the wireless telegraph company of Honolulu. The air line distance between Ka huka Point and Portland is about 2300 miles, it being about 2100 miles from San Francisco to the island. It is expected that in a short time a permanent service will be estab lished between, the Coast and the Hawaiian Islands. jB UJ ong The Heal thai Doesn't go up the Flue You receive intense, din from every ounce of luel bi there are no damp chimneys or pipes to waste the heat from a PERFECTION Oil Heater (Equipped with Smokeless Device) Carry il Irom room to room. The Dalles Arrested for jumping his board bill, Lewis Kracht had the complaining witness ip the case, Peter Henningsen, arrested for sell ing intoxicating liquors on Sunday Mr. Henningsen, who is proprietor of the Gerlinger Hotel here, had a warrant sworn out for the arrest of Kracht on the charge of jumping his board bill. Kracht pleaded guilty, paid the amount of the bill, $4.50 and costs In the case. Next day he visited the district attorney, and of his own volition told him that on Sunday, September 20, Henningsen sold him liquors, besides selling to six other men, the names of whom he gave to the official. The six wit nesses all substantiated Kracht's testimony. f "v j 14 ffltfffA't J THOMAS L. HISGEN. OREGON BRIEFLETS Would Corner Liquor Hales. Medford At a special meeting of the city council last week an ordi nance was introduced at the request of W. L. Albany will soon have one of the largest seminaries in the state. The big addition to the building of the Academy of Our Lady of Perpetual Help, a Catholic seminary for young women, is nearing completion and the school will then be one of the finest of the kind in the state. Notwithstanding the heavy drain upon the treasury by reason of the adoption of the university appropria tions last June, for which no state levy was made last January, the funds tn the state treasury will be sufficient to pay all warrants between now and the time when 1909 taxes will begln-tp come in next April. That there's a "rift within the lute' of the Gonipers proposition to deliver the labor vote of the country to Dem ocracy Is becoming more apparent While Mr. P-rynn and Mr. Goinpers are making special appeals to labor, neither refers to the deplorable condition of laber In the Democratic South. Mr. John P. White, for six years president of the Iowa United Mine Workers, and now one of the national officers of the United Mine Workers' Asoclatlon, who investigated mining labor conditions In the South, Is not so reticent. In a re cent address to Local Union No. 97 of Albia, Iowa, he told of persecutions of labor lu Alabama where a coal miners' strike was In progress. He Is reported as saying: "The miners of Alabama hnve been subjugated until a majority have become cringing dependencies. Al inobt dally some of the laboring men of that Sfate were mercilessly shot down for daring to assert tncir rlgnu as American citizens. Ninety-one members of the Mine Workers' Association were thrown into jail without having com mit led any crime other than becoming niembcis of the organization.''
