Earl Simmons, a 14-year-old Jock ey from Los Angeles, was killed last week at the Portland Country Club race track while exercising a 2-year- old Mooded colt. The bodies of three elk have been found in the woods near Elk Creek, with their throats cut. None of the flesh had been taken, but it wag found that the teeth had been extracted. Contracts for the building of a now ferryboat to ply between Van couver, Wash., and the Oregon shore. have been let by the Portland Rail' way, Light & Power Company to the St. Johns Shipbuilding Company to cost $26,000. As Charles Taylor was passing along the road in the north part of Seaside last week a large wildcat suddenly dropped from the trees above him, landing near his feet. A club was convenient with which the cat was quickly dispatched. The Oregon conference of the Methodist Episcopal Church, at Sa lem last week, adopted a resolution pledging the conference to pay the salary and expenses of a man who will devote hIB entire time to organ izing new Sunday schools In Oregon. The holdings of the Oregon Coal & Navigation Company, of Marsh field, including the Llbble coal mines, 5000 acres of land, waterfront, dock and Bteamer M. F. Plant, are report ed to have been bought by Western brokers for James J. Hill. Janieg Wlthycombe, vice-president of the Oregon Agricultural College at Corvallis, Intends building a mod ern ranch house on hlg place near Hillsboro and move back to his farm after he leaves the college. Wash ington county Republicans are in sistent that he shall lead the state ticket In 1910. Salem Republicans believe they are the first in Oregon to send Presi dent Roosevelt a specific request to take the stump for William H. Taft. A telegram has been sent to Chair man Hitchcock at Chicago signed by Charles L. McNary, president of the Taft-Sherman Club, and by numerous other prominent Republicans of Marlon county. Three thousand people assembled In the Armory, at Portland, laBt week and listened to speech of two and one-half hours' duration by Thomas P. Gore, the blind United States sen ator, from Oklahoma, the occasion being the formal opening of the Dem ocratic campaign in Oregon. The name of Bryan was received with great enthusiasm. In the case of the United States against the Oregon & California Railroad Company et al., the Gov ernment takes the stand that the terms of the grant allowing the rail road alternate sections of land along its route have been violated. At torneys for 62 8 applicants tor land along the road made a motion in the United States Court last week pray ing to Intervene and be made parties to the suit. The court granted the potitlon. Following the lead of Washington fishermen, Oregon salmon snarers will sook to enjoin Master Fish War den McAllister from enforcing recent legislation preventing fishing both in the upper and lower river. An In junction wag presented to the Fed eral Court on September 30 by the Columbia River Trappers' Union. Washington fishermen have already secured an Injunction which prevents Oregon authorities interfering with fishing operations north of the center of the main channel of the tlver. August Huckensteln, of Salem, ha been selected by the executive com mittee of the Democratic State Cen tral Committee to complete the par ty's electoral ticket In this state. He takes the place of Bernard Daly, of Lakevlew, who found it impossible to accept the nomination at the hands of the Democratic State Con vention. Mr. Daly Is county Judge of Lake county, and In order for him to accept the place on the electoral ticket it would have been necessary for him to resign the county Judge ship. "Keep Bryn's picture out of your paper or be killed by a baum." This Inscription, followed by a picture of a hand and Borne hieroglyphics evi dently Intended for daggers, adorned u card Inclosed in a small envelope and received Saturday by Jack Hus ton, editor and publisher of the Mon day Magnet, a weekly paper publish ed In Pendleton. The envelope was postmarked at Walla Walla under date of September 23. The author of the card Is evidently an Illiterate, or purposely feigned that character istic In his writing and spelling. The curd has been turned over to police. Vandalism in the destruction and removal of signposts and monuments which designate the locations of roads, tracts of land and boundaries of townships In Crook county has beun ho marked of late that County Roadmaster McLaughlin has causes to be posted throughout the county notices offering a reward of $10 for evidence which will lead to the con viction of any person removing same. The road laws of Oregon provide both flue and Imprisonment for this offense. At the last session of the Crook County Court new signboards bhowing the directions and distance to the nearest towns were ordered put up, and the general reward of fered has a bearing on the protection of these signposts as much as those now standing. Over 25,000 people attended the State Fair on Portland day, thus breaking all previous records. John Temple Graves, vlce-presl deutlal candidate of the Indepen dence party, spoke in Portland Sat urday evening, September 26. The fourteenth annual session of the general association of Congrega tional churches and ministers of Ida ho will be held at Ontario, Or., Oc tober 6 and 7. The question of voting for and against cows running at large will go upon the November ballot In Wash ington county in all precincts Where the petition Is regularly filed. Mrs. John Hanan died at bur home near The Dalles last week of tuber culosis. Mr. Hanan purchased a cof fin for his wife when she was first taken sick, about two weeks ago. The court at Eugene last week disposed of the Lucky Boy mining properties in the Blue River district to Cord Sengstake and E. A. Lyman for $131,647, they being the only bidders. An apple sale Involving In the neighborhood ot $90,000 took place last week when J. H. 8telnhart, ot New York City, contracted for 80 cars of winter varieties with the Hood River Applegrowers' Union. The Grants Pass city conucll has passed an ordinance prohibiting ven dors and peddlers from offering for sale any fruit at the trains unless the same be clean, wholesome and free from taint and disease. L. B. Burrel, an aged miser, who dropped dead In the Portland post office last week, and whose hoard was found to reach a total of over $17,000, had an additional sum ot $1560 sewed in the lining of his coat. The State Normal School at Ash land began the new year last week with a new administrative head and new Instructors in several depart ments. The attendance at the open ing week was the largest In the his tory of the school. Judge McBrlde, at Oregon City, last week granted a decree of di vorce to Mrs. Louise Powell-Stevens, who has gained so much publicity through the actions of her former husband, Thomas M. Stevens, who was married several weeks ago to Lillian Monk. Frank Freeman, of Tillamook county, while attending the State Fair in Salem last week, was held up by two armed robbers and re lieved of $35 In cash and a gold watch and chain. It Is the only case of robbery that occurred at the fair this year. Hiram E. Mitchell, a son of the late Senator John H. Mitchell, and a former officer of the United States army, was last week granted a di vorce at Oregon City from Mtnnette Mitchell. Soldiers Muy Not (let Turkeys, Oaklund Douglas county, the banner turkey county ot the state, will furnish only about 100 turkeys on an order for 10,000 of these birds, and if, as expected, all other sections In which these birds havo been or dered, fall as short as far as this county did, Uncle Sam's soldiers in the Philippines will have a very Hm- j ited Thanksgiving dinner. A Portland firm, which received a.n order from the government for enough turkeys to supply all the sol diers in the Philippines, placed an order here for 35,000 pounds, which Is equivalent to 10,000 birds A good price was offered the farmers, but thoy looked upon the demand for the turkeys at this time of the year as simply an effort of the local trade to get the birds in advance of the Thanksgiving demand. Liquor Denier Gets Heavy Sentence. Albany G. B. Hansard was con victed in the Justice court at Leban on last week of selling liquor In dry territory and Justice llurtenshaw Imposed a fine of $500 and sentenced Hansard to serve 30 days in the Jail. This is the first time the maxi mum penalty under the local option law was ever Imposed In this county. It Is the eighth time Hansard has been sentenced for selling liquor in Lebanon. He was defendant in the first case brought in Linn county un der the local option law and was then fined $50. In 1906 he pleaded glulty to five counts In the circuit court and Judge Burnett imposed an aggregate sentence of $300 and 10 days. Last year he pleaded guilty In the Justice court at Lebanon and was given $250 and ten days. PuU Too Much Faith in Stranger. Prairie City A well dressed young man, who clnlmed to be a representa tive of the Elgin Watch Company, giving his namo as Wlllard Bell, is in Jail accused of defrauding a hotel keeper. Bell had credit at the Blue Mountain Hot Springs to the extent of $4 0, where he wag a guest for several days. One day, about three weeks ago, he announced his purpose to visit Prairie City and return the same day. The distance is 1 2 miles. Several guests at the Springs had checks to be cashed and accepted this opportunity to Bend the checks with stranger; but he failed to return. Ho cashed the checks, but left the next morning on the stage for parts unknown. Bell wag captured in Salt Lake City and returned to Canyon City. Chinese Shot Down on Street. Portland Lum Lung Glp, a Chi nese, 35 years old, a member of the Bow On Tong i)d one of the prin cipal witnesses against Lem Won and Yee Geung, who are now held In the county Jail for the murder of the Chinese merchant Lee Dal Hoy, was murdered Sunday night at 11:15 o'clock. Lum was shot in the back as he entered the hallway to 97 sec ond street. His assassin made good his escape. The murder was done within the hearing of a score of people, many ot whom saw the assassin flee with the smoking revolver in his hand. The police station is not more than 120 feet from the spot. The shots had scarcely ceased when several policemen started In pursuit of the murderer, who eluded his pursuers. Hunting Illg Game la Africa. Oregon City Interesting tales of a hunt for big game in the wilds of Africa come from E. B. Bronson, Twenty years ago Bronson was the owner of a cattle ranch in the West and one of his cowboys was Dr. W. E. Carll, now mayor of Oregon City. Becoming tired of life on a cattle ranch, Bronson went to New York City and became a Journalist, from there going to Africa. Dr. Carll thinks that Bronson will return to the United States about the time President Roosevelt is ready to start on his much heralded hunt and that the President will take Bronson back with him. Warden Arrests Had Man. Oregon City Depty Fish Warden Louis Rail had a strenuous time Sun day afternoon arresting W. M. Will iams on the bank of the Clackamas river for shooting salmon. Williams Is from Grays Crossing, Multnomah county. Rail found him fishing for salmon with a gun and placed him under arrest. He searched him and found a revolver. While trying to Front Ruin Small Frnlta Roseburg Reports received from the small fruit and vegetable growers in the several sections of the coun try indicate that the severe frosts of last week practically ruined all the small fruit and vegetables.
