H60D RIVER Q LACIER, THURSDAY, AUGUST 20, 1908. Five WALKS UP MT. HOOD FROM HOOD RIVER Mies Uortiudu UeubHai, au English woiuhd wlm huu walked over a ood part ot the esith's surface, arrivsd at the Mount Hood hotel heie Batar day, alter having pranced la from Cloud Cap Inn, apparently aa frenu a a youiijioolt, aaya the Oregon inn. Minn llenhani eiijuys the diatiuctiou of beiu,c the only woman who evei walked fr m Hood Kiver to the Inn an J back anfu, aud liouti at the idea that abe accomplished anything re markable. The distance from Hood Kiver r.o the iuu is 28 miles, in the lual tour of whiuh tbere is a raise of feet. According to the guests at tbis skyscraping report who made the trip iu uu automobile she wag leaa fa tigued than any ot the party staying there, and entertained the gueata ou tbu tvening of her arrival with an in toi ettiun uiirrntive o( her adventures on toot iu muuy countiiea. Shod iu broad aoled shoes aud aim ed w itb no alpeubtock, Miss lienbam l-It Hood l.iver Thursday morning at 8 o'olook and reached the Inn at 7 that evening, a small handbag, all the lug gage abe oairica with her, having beau aent up by the auto. Fridty morning be was ready tor the ascent of tb mountain, despite the fact that a high wind waa blowiug and that the guide accompanied her with reluctance. For several boura tbey battled with the wind and ice, but dually were foiced to turu back wheu ueur the aummit, owing to the velocity of the wind, which the guide told her made it extremely perilous to continue farther. Descending the mountain, Miss ben ham walked back to Mount Hood postoffice, a di'sunoe of 14 miles, where she remained for the night, aud yesteiday walked into Hood Kiver, reaching here at 1 o'clock. When asked about her trip Miss lien bam said : "I wns very much disappointed at not being ublo to reach tlie top ot Mount Hood. 1 have walked over a good pait of the world and have climbed over 200 snow-capped peaks, and this is my tlrst failure. I think we could have made it at that if the guide bad uot iusiscel ou turning back. I'orhupa he knew best, though. Tbo wind was territic. Mount Hood is ditfereut from auy other mountain I ever attempted to climb. The as cent ia very abrupt. The view from it ia magsiUceut. Why do 1 walk? Because 1 can see the country o better advantage. 1 have boeu tour ing tbe world ou foot for several years. 1 was bnru in London and first started by tramping through England. From there 1 went to Switzerland aud climbed tbe Matter bom and other snow-capped peaks in tbe Alps. La or 1 went to Asia, whoie 1 also climbod iu the Hima layas. From theie I wnlked over a good part ct Australia, Mew Zealand, Tasmania oud other islands iu tbe South Fucitlo. Your valley reminds me considerably of the Tasmania) country ou aocouut of your timber and apple trees. Instead of pine, oak and II r there tbey have tbe eucalyp tus, which tbey are cloaring from the land aud planting orchards, Tbey; are already growing many thousands of burrels of apples theie annually and are shipping them all over tbe world, except possibly to America. Last year 1 spent walking iu Japan and t his summer 1 have been in liiit iab Columbia. 1 have diluted all the snow-capped mountains there aud ail of tbe others ou tbe coast. From bore 1 am going to Mount Shasta, where I will make my liual ascent in America. In two weeks 1 expect to sail from Ban Fraucisoo (or tbe Hawaiian islands, where 1 will do some moun tain climbiug, and from there 1 go to South America, where I will spend the winter among the mountains and seeing the couutry on foot. Aa you can see 1 no longer care for dross. 1 have an income suttloieut for my needs and globe trotting has taken such possession of me that 1 have be come a homeless tramp." What Is Host for Indigestion ? Mr. A. People who thiuk that running a newspaper, booming the country and publishing optimistic screeds about big wheat yields, high pi iced land and other similar brain productions ia a pleasant task should disabuse tbeir minds of this idea. All during the haivest season tbe Fast Oregoniau has takeu pride iu pub lishing tbe boasted wheal, yields ot this exceedingly diy season and has taken especial pleasure in saying that the wheat crop of Umttilla county is almost normal despite tbe lack of rain. Tbia crop begins moving tbis week, lo tbe Wenatobea and Lake Cbelau section tbere will be double tbe apple crop of last year and tbe apples will ta exceedingly floe. Rogue rivet bas a good apple crop, but . the pear crop is very short. Hood River has a bumper apple crop ot very flue quality, lo tbe Grande Roude and John Day country tbere will be a full crop. Coming down tbe Payette Valley to Idaho there Is a very tine Drop of apples aud prunes. Utah bas a tine crop of apples and peaobes. In Coloiado, Palisade, Cli' ton, Fruitdale and Fruits are without apples, but there will be a few pears. Fast ot Rifle tbere will be a fine orop ot apples and peaches, tbe latter being tbe finest orop ever grown In tbat section. In tbe Montrose countiy and the Montezuma valley tbere is a good orop of tine apples of practically all varieties. On tbe northern slope at Paonia and Hotchkies tbere is a good orop of apples and a fair crop of peiches. At Delta tbe apple ciop is light, but tbey will ship about 100 oars against 250 oars shipped from this point two years ago. Taking the entire produoiog section of tbe north west I feel safe in saying tbat the ap ple orop will be exceptionally large and colleotively of very floe quality. Tbe weather baa been exceedingly hot and tbis bas aided very materially in causing the peaobes to mature early." Superstition Kills Indian.
