KEIR & CASS SMITH BLOCK RELIABLE DRUGGISTS According to The Dalles Chronicle Hold River bad been selected by offi cials of tb Rex Spray compsny for tbe erection of large spray plant, but were weaued away front it by the so perior charms of our sister city. Tbe Chronicle lays: 'Thomas li. Drown, of Omaha, vice president, and A. 8. Martin, of Portland, field manager for tbe Pad do coast territory, of tbe Km com pany, manufacturers of a lime and sulphur solution for the eprayiug of trees aud vines, were here this week looking over locations In view of es tablishing a branch factory in Tbe Dalles. "The main plant of tbe company is located at Omaha. Branches have al ready been ettnbliahed ut North Vaki ma. Wash , Veuetin, Calif., and Wen atobee, Waal:. Tbe busiue-s of tbe Rex company is expanding so rapidly that ita officials deem it necessary to branch nut iuto tbis territory and es tablish another plant. Messrs. Brown and Martin came up from Portland tbe first of the week to look for a lo cation at ilood River. After visiting that oity tbey decided to locate tbore and came to Tbe Dalles to visit some of their customers, not with tbe idea of loklog for a location for tbe branch factory beie. Tbe meu spcut tbiee daa In this city and vicinity, and visited tbe Hue fruit oiobards outside of tbe oily. After see ing tbe line orchards aud farms be tbey began to open their eyes aud consider whether or not tbey had not been too hasty in selecting Hood Kiv er for a location and upon further investigation of conditions here tbey actioully decided to give up tbb idea of establishing tbe plant down the river and build tbe factory In 'Ibe Dalles iOHtesd. 'Mr. Martin and 1 did not come up to Tbe Dalles this week with any intention of eataUiF.hiug our plant in tbis city,' said Mr. Hrowu to a Chronicle reporter yesterday. 'We decided some time ago to brauob out in tbis territory aud visited Hood Kiver witb tbe idea of finding a loca tion for tbe factory there. Every thing seemed satisfactory iu that city and while we did not decide upon tbe exact location there we decided to huiid tbe uew plant at Hood River. " 'We have a few customers for our spray here iu The Dalles and came on up here fro ' Hood River merely to call on them. They were kind enough to take us out iuto tbe country to see the fruit orchards and aL. once we saw many reasons why it would be more advantageous to establish tbe plant here. " 'I have vlHited all the good fruit diatriuts of the United Slates, ut least all the gjod apple districts. Wbeu it comes to cultivation of tbe same, well 1 opeued my eyes wbeu 1 saw the soil iu which tbe trees are grown here and the manner in which it is being cultivated. In tbis respect tbe fruit growers iu tbis locality have them all beaten, Tbo soil is wonder ful and the orchards look like gardeus. " 'We oonsidor the possibilities of tbe district around tbis city so much greater than down tbe river that we have practically deoided to build tbe plant in Tbe Dulles. Of course tbe other officials of tbe oompauy will have a voice in the matter, but I am sure they will decide cn this city as a location upon our recommendation, for we Und the conditions most favor able by far here. We looked over lo cutions here in tbe oity, but have ar rived at no definite conclusion wbere tbe plant would be erected.' " "The proposed plant lo this clty'will cost between $35, 000 and $40,000. It will give employment to about 20 men. That the Rex officials should decide to locale their factory elsewhere aud come here witb no idea of Tbe Dalles as a location uud then after viewing local conditions decide that it would be more advantageous to build tbe plant here Is cue of tbe highest ooni plimenta ever paid this locality as a fruit growing country. The fruit lauds here speak for themselves, dem onstrating that when it comes to rais ing fruit, apples in particular, they are tbe peer of any district in tbe whole country." State Fair September 14-19. Besides the large exhibit that tbe Oregon Agricultural College wfll make ut tbe Oregon state fair t Salem, September 14 to 11) next, tbe officers of that institution have arranged to give tbe fair visitors some special en tertainment each day. I ridty, the Ut'th day of the fair, has been set asido us "Agricultural College" day aud speci.il eftoits will be made to have this the most important occasion of the eutne week. Ibe Oregon Agri cultural College has the leputation ot being one of the leading educational institutions on the Pacitlo coest aud its participation in the program of tin fair shows that Its president and his co workers fully eppreoiate that the fair is a worthy cause wbiob has been a great factor in tbe state's de velopment.
