SCHOOL DRILLS AREVERY FINE TWO PERFORMANCES NECESSARY EnierUlnmtut Praised by Large Audi ence m the Rest of Its Kind Y.str UlTtn He-e. One of tbe Bnest exhibition of drill ever given in Oregou was presented at tbe opera bouse last Friday after noon and eveuing. At first tbe date was tet for the evening, tut tbe tick ets were all sold and people were clamoring foi more, ao tbe commit tee in charge deoided to have mati nee to aooommodate the great crowd which came. Ibe opera house was packed at botb performances. Word ounnot etptesi onougb praise tor the teachers lu charge ot the play. Ibey worked haid with untiring labor aud success is surely oertaiu when tbe work Is so perfectly planned. Credit Is due to tbe following instruotois: Misses Hicks, Willis, Eaileand all the teachers of tbe primary grades. Hood River orchestra gave a abort musierle before the curtain went op and wbeu It did to show four small children readlui rhymes out of a Mother (loose book. In a short time Miss Vera WillUnis, lu the cotume of Mother Uoose, ar rived and promised tbe children a peep of the people ot whom tbey bad been retdiug. So with a wave of ber niagio wand tbe different characters cams fortb all dressed to represeut their part Jack Horner with bia pie, Jack with bis bumped bead and Jill with the pail, Little Ro Peep with her shepherd's crook, little liny lilue, Jaok Spiatt aud bis wife, tbe Queen ot Hearts and her husband, tbe Knave of Hearts, Simple Simon, the Bride from London hi ought borne In a wheelbarrow aud the old woman with all her cblldreu were there, and what a bappy lot they all were. At tbe end of the act the children all snug song, the different verses of it all be iug nursery rhymes. The seooud drill was oue planned for rosn buds and, Indeed, tbe 16 chil dren resembled rosea with their tittle pink dressos and pink ribbons in their bair, and tbe skill with wblob tbey preseutnd tbetr ruler drill show ed the wise, careful and judioious training of their teacher, Misa Helen Dietz, one of tbe lavorite primal y teachers. Tbe little girls all sang tbeir motion toug and demonstrated it well. Miss Rradley acooinpauied them on the piano, To Misies Stewart aud Ulynn un stinted praise should be given for tbe exoellnnt way in which twelve girls taken from tbe fourth aud fifth grades gave a tainhorlun drill, iu time with tbe music played by Miss llragg. Ibe girls all wore white dresses, white shoes aud stockings and white rib bons, all looking very dainty and sweet. The next was an exhibition ot Ten nyson's favorite drill, winding tbe May pole, lustexd of using the colors of tbe rainbow, tbe girls were pa triotic and used red, while aud blue streamers, wearing white dresses. The perfeot winding of tbe pole in the many dillerent ways showed incessant tutoring under tbo capable instruc tion ot Miss Eby. Viola Niobolsou accompauied them on tbe piano. The exhibition following tbe flag drill showed plainly that the sixteen gills bad been very carefully trained by Miss lllnkle, aud was exhibited witb military perfection. The girls were all gowned in white with red, white aud bluo suslics across their ohests and tied underneath tbolr arms at tbe waist. Each gill can led two American (lags. Every motion show ed tbe girls graceful and obedient, tor no ouo unlets of an obedient na ture could have performed each move ment so perfectly. The next drill, under tbe splendid leadoiebip of Prof. Crouse, forced the audience to hulieve that after all boys oau be graceful if tbey try hard enough. Fourteen boys were dressed In khnki colored overalls witb sunflowers made ot green, yellow and brown tis sue paper pinned on tbeir ankles. knees, shoulders and chests, and their faces wore tbe liveliest looking sun flowers tbe reporter baa ever seen. Each boy wore a rudle of sunflower petals around bis face, bad a sun flower at tbo back of bis head and cartied green wands witb sunflowers at the top of them. Tbe drill, which was marched to music played by Miss tiragg, was perfeot. Tbo fan drill exhibited so beautiful ly showed tbe audienoe that even though uone of tbe sixteen girls iu it were old enough to he voted upon as belles of Hood Kiver, in a few years any one of them can very easily be chosen for queen. Miss blte cer tainly deserves hearty thanks for the excellent way in which the girl shew ed her good training. Xberu were eight paiis of girls dressed in the tul- lowing colors, eacn carrying a Ian io match her bowii Pink, oreen. blue J yellow, red and white.
