But it la understood tbat tbe president will not oppose tbis movement. Tbe McKiuley bill providing for tbe restoration ot the motto was favorably reported by the committee reoen' ly. During tbe com mittee bearing Congressman Knee land, of California, suggested tbat a bill be framed to compel clearing house certificates to read: "1 know tbat my Redeemer 11 vet b." Portland A speoial to the Oregon Ian fiom Salem states that tbe annual report of Master Fish Warden Van Dusen was made public today.- It shows tbat during the year tbere were caught on tbe Oregon elde of the Co lumbia liver 15,798,110 pounda ol obinook salmon, 1,045,510 pounds of sllversides, 1,112,009 pounds ot uteel beads and 190,102 pounds of blue backs, or a total ot 18,151,745 pounds, tbe total oatob in 1900 wee 22,908,000 pouods, which shows a falling oil foi 1907 of about 20 per vent. Tbe pro duct for tha Oregon coast streams for the yeat was: Chinook, 2,018,013 pounds; sllversides, 3,852,112 pounds: steelbeads, 210,520; tulea, 057,407 pounds, or a total of 6,738,082 against 8,043,090 pounds in 1906, or a falling off tor 1907 ot about 30 per oeut. - Salem One of tbe matters consider ed at the meeting of the state board held February 20 at tbe state bouse, dh the election of a master flab war den, or etato Hub commissioner. (Jov ernor Chamberlain made a motion to proceed lo the election of a fish war den to succeed the present Incumbent of the poaiton, II. O. Van Dusen. Secretary of State Benson moved to amend by laying on tbe table tempor arily and tbe amended motion was carried by a vote of two to one, State Treasurer Steele voting with Secre tary Benson. It will thus be seen tbat van Dusen' scalp is safe until tbe board takes a notion to prooeed furth er with tbe case. It has been known for some time tbat Van Dusen is per sona non grata with the state admin istration and particularly wltb the governor, wbo is understood to nave taken tbe position tbat Van Dusen has been unduly active In espousing tbe otiise of one side to the factional warfare being waged by tbe upper and lower Columbia river fishermen. Dufur, Ore. This city has tasked an ordinance unique in mnnloipal leg islation, lhe ordinanoe la Intended to piouib't "the keeping of white rats for pets, show, amusement or any other purpose in tbe corporate limits of the city of Dufur." Tbe ordinanoe goes into effect 30 days from its pas sage. It was signed and approved by Mayor J. V. Johnson, February 11. Violations of tbe oidinanoe are made punishable by a fine ot not less than I.") nor more than 30, or by Imprison ment of not less tnan three or mote than 20 days. Tbe ordinance was made necessary because of a fad among boys at Dufur to have rats of the white species for pets. More than a soore of the rodents are now lu tbe town. Propmiutiou of tbe ro dents Is thought to he dangerous. Chicago To stop tbe wave ot crime now weeping over Cblcagu, tbe po Pee authorities hare appealed tu ibe city oounoil to dralt ordinances cover ing the sale and confiscation of fire arms, ibe oounoil bag prepared two bills, oie providing for the dumping into ibe lake onoe a year all tbe fire arms tbat come into possession ot tbe police; another requires dealers to pay a license fee ot 150 a year and a third prohibits tbe carrying of tire aims by any person, unless be is a sheriff, constable, policeman or cor oner. FLEET AT CALAO ON WAY NORTH Tbe battle ship fleet of tbe United States has arrived at Csllao, Peru, on the west ooint of South America. In response to publio Interest and In quiries which are ooustantly coming to toe buieau about oountrlea visited by the fleet, the director of tbe Inter national Bureau of the American Re publics, Johu Barrett, has prepared the following data about Callao, tbe port, Lima, tbecapltnl city, and Peru in general, wbiob oan be used entire ly or in part, at such time as may be deemed best. Callao, where the American battle fleet Is now maklug its fourth stop iu its cruise louud South America, Is one ot tbe most important ports on tbe Paoiflo side aud is tbe great de- po' for the commerce of Peru. It is seooud only to Valparaiso, Chile, 1, 500 miles to tbe south. Approximate ly one half of tbe foriegn trade of Peru, wbiob amounted lust year to more than 150,000,000, posses in and out of Callao, making it a busy, ac I.. re aod lodustiious cifv. Foil 1,000 vessels put into the harbor every year aod 20 steamers together with 40 sailing crafts may any day be seen lying at anoboi In tbe bay. Callio la one ot tbe Mo est and safe eat harbors on the Pacific and tbe Peruvian government is sbowlna sreat energy not only to make it modern, convenient and aeoure, but also to equip tbe olty itself with every neces sity tor eomlortstie snd hygienic liv ing. Tbere are massive wharves at tbe water's edge, protected by a pier 800 teet long; this pier is connected with tbe shore by a bridge, built ou' iron piles, 2,800 feet long. In the bay is a floating dock which will ad mit vessels ot 21 feet draught aud 5.- 000 tons weight. Steamers lie along side tbe wharves and freight Is trans shipped. Immediately into cars on tisoks within a lew feet ot tbe water, lhe resemblance tu a modern oort Ilka Havre or liook of Hollaud is re Bjarkably striking. Tbe macbiueiy about these docks is chiefly eleottio. the power being drawn from streams only a small distance bsck In tbe mountains. A natural protection ot the bty is tbe Island of Han Lorenzo, which shelters the city from southwest storms. Adjaoeut to Han Loienzn Is the Palomnios group, ou which is a powerlul light house, tbe light trota wbiob is vitible tor eighteen miles. Just recently erected is a toner for wireless telegraphy and communica tion by this means will soon be iu operation all along tbe coast. Uallao, as a town, Is very old. its foundation dating back to the year 1537. ibe original site was destroyed by an eatrtbquake in 1740 and swal lowed op by tbe sen. The pieteut olty yet retains seme traoea of its ear lier history, in tbe narrow and Irre gular streets, but today It has growu away fiom suob oonditioos aud la modern In every sense of tbe word. ine population numbers 32.000, al though in the day time it would seem much largei, because many men come bere during business bonrs but return In the afternoon to their homes iu Lima. Lima, the oapltol of Peru, is only nine miles from Callao and lies 500 feet higher, close against the foothills ot tbe Andes. Two steams and one eleotrio trolley line conneot tbe oapi- toi witn tbe port, and tbere is besides s fine avenue for oarriages, so tbat tbe traveler can easily and quiokly go from one city to tbe other at any time. This Is one ot tbe tnoet lomao tio spots ot Spanish Amerioa. vying with tbe City of Mexico iu the inter est which shows the Influences ot Eu r ipe upon the newly dlsoovered Aiueiica, but Lima is far more thiiB a oity of uhurohes, plazas, monasteries and bouses ot grandees ot Spain. Nevertheless, tbe impress of Piiino aud tbe vioeroys should not be forgot ten, for Lima was at one time the oenter of government tor all South Amerioa and her tuthority extended from Panama to Buenos Aytes. It is one of the most beautiful cities of the western world and enjoys a oilmute, wbiob, without exaggeration, can hi oalled perpetual spring. Lima also has a new avenue, Colum bus aventda, nearly half a mile long, at tbe end ot wbiob is the statute of Columbus, reproduced in the statute at tbe front of the de Lesseps house at Colon, on tbe Isthmus of Panama. Ibis is tbe fashionable drive uud promenade of society. Other new streets testify to the rapid advance tbe city is making. Elect: io ilghtt. trolley cars, abundant water and such public utiltitles are making this oity of 150,000 Inhabitants fully abreast of tbe times. Lima is the seat ot the oldest university lu America, found ed bere in 1551. Mot so very far from Lima, as distances go In South Amer ica, are tbe battle fields of Junln and Ayacuoho, where, In 1824, was fought the final struggle by which Spain lost torever her bold on this pait ot the world. Peru has great advantage over other republics of South Amerioa. She is transcontinental country, bsvlng a ooast line on tbe Paoiflo of 1,600 miles from wblcb tbe wbole world can be reach ad, yet one ot the great oommer- oial centers of Peru is lquitos, an in land city on toe Atlantio water shed. I' rom lquitos ocean steamers pass 2,- 000 miles down the Amazon through the Brazilian port of Mauaos and pro oeed to New iork or Kuiope, just as it tbey bad come from a ooast town on salt water. This Is an advantage possessed by no other I country except Colombia, wblcb baa ports on both tbe Caribbean (Atlantio) and the Pa cific. lhe variety ot natural products within Peru's confines adds greatly to her promise tor future growth, lier wealth does not by any means depend upon minerals alone. She is a large sugar producer: ber cotton is famous for certain good qualities; sheexpoits hides, coltee and rice; from the de posits in tbe soil oome copper, silver, petroleum and salt; guaao Is dug from its beds and the nctive rubbei tracts under cultivation are yielding riches to their possessors. The government is today wideawake and amtltlous. It encourages rail roads, it invites foreign capital to in vest money in well secured enter prises and has already entered upon a oareer ot substantial, industrial pros perity. Peru is a little less than fif teen times the size of New York state. Her climate embraces every kind from the troplos to peipetual snows. there Is no known plant or animal that will not grow here. The met famous engineering structure in the world, the Oroya railway built by Henry Melggs, tbe American, runs from tbe Paoiflo ooean aoross the An des. The highest navigated body ot frein water, Lake Tltloaca. and tbe Harvard Astronomical Observatory, from wbiob tbe most aocurate oliser vations are taken from bolt way up El Mistl near Arequlpa, are institutions cf wbiob Peru is justly proud. Peru baa a population approximat ing 5,000,000. The country is ttwre fore not so sparsely settled as might be Imagined and the people are iu dustrious and home loving. There publio comes within what may be called tbe canal belt and when this is finished, when rail communication is established between tbe upper waters of tbe Amazon aud the Paoiflo, Peru Is sure to beoome one of the powerful factors in tbe life of South Ameiica. Stockholders Medina;, l'be East Fork Irrigating Oompauy will hold their annual meeting at tbe Artisans Hall Saturday, March 14, 1908, at 2 p. m. All stockholders sbou.d attend ibis meeting. C. R. He sug gested tbat the funds could be rslsed tor this by ;a voting contest, which met with favor.
