' Kb, bw " L. H. HUGGINvS a CO. Now is NEW ROAD IS SURVEYED Surveyor Clyde and W. W. Swan, accompanied by a committee of the White Salmon Commercial Club, viewed out the proppied new road loading to tbe railrnad atatloo last Friday. Tbey found tbe distance from tbe town line ot White Stlmon to the depot to be a tew foet less than a mile. They also found tbat a good 10 per cent grade could be secured down the blntf, and that said grade would be jast about bah a mile long. Tbe distance between tbt station aud the White Salmon postntiloe Is less tbim a mile and a quarter by the pio posed road. Mr. Swan bus agieed to furnish lumber lor tbe bridge across Joslyn creek and also luiubei for fc sidewalk the entire distance from the station to town, and Judge Byrkeli will also make a substantial donation if the road ia built. This wiU out down tbe distance almost one-half as compared with the old route around by tiingen. We stated tbe otber week tbat the depot was situated 300 yards east ot ti:e Hue between Hwan and Sulndorf. lbs figures should have been 300 feet. It Is thought that the grade will not be a ditiioult one to build, as a great part of it is loose boulders which can le rolled down into a counnr.itlvely level condition, where thoy utu be oovered with a good tbtok coating of earth and gravel, thus making tbe best kind of a roadbed at but very Ilttlu cost. Aside from tbe grade down the bluff there is practically no grading to be done and tbe remainder of tbe road, can be built at nominal expense. The owners of tbe Juslyn townslte realize tbat this road would be a great benefit to tbem, and conse quently they are williug to subscribe liberally towards it. Mr. Swan bat boon foremost In promoting this road and has already spent considerable time and money ou the project. White Halmon would also be benetltd by tbe construction of this road, for it would provide the shortest possible route to the depot, with a very easy grade, and we believe tbat our people will also subscribe liberally toward it, as tbey have always done In the pant In regard to needed road work. With tbe building of this road and the new road through Cook 'a addi tion, and the completion ot tbe Uurdoln road Into town, there will certainly be a great amount o! road work in this vicinity during tbe com ing spring and summer. Tbls road will probably not reoelve much sup pott from the county In the near fu ture, but the road can and we doubt uot will be constructed wi.bout any outside aid. Tbe road down tbs bluff will be a great.benetlt to this section and the only unfortunate circum stance that we have been able to dis cover In tbe construction of this road 1 that it would be a serious handi cap to Ulngen, which would thus be thrown off the main road and left pruotloally Isolated. Enterprise. Didn't Agree With Him. A Carolina man was recently ln . spectlng a farm owned by him and op erated by an old friend who had press ed Into service every member of bis family, Including his aged f ather. "What seems to be the matterf "I dnnno, sir. I guess farming don't affreo with him no more." Success Mngnzlne. Cheap Fun. lie You talk about men playing poker. It Is no worse a vice than the ,.- shopping habit of the women. Tbe wide Interest taken in tbe pros pective opening of tbe reservation Is indloated bv the hundreds ot letters of inquiry from all parts of tbe coun try which have reached the local United States land offices duilug tbe past month or two.
