Hershey bas registered a protest with tbe state railroad commission con cerning the manner in which the ex press company handle tbe strawberry crop at this point. Mr. llershey bas taken bis berries to the station for shipment over tbe line to points on the branoh line and in some oases the company has refused to load them. Mr. Hershey tilled out several crates to points with which No. 2 makes connection, but they went right on and left the beiries standing on tbe ttneks, "can't take time to load them" being their plea. However, the daily output has reaobed it max imum. Tbe largest shipment of the season was on Tuesday June 4, when six cars were billed out. The cold weather of the past week bag served as a check upon tbe ripening of the berries, and it will prolong tbe season mnterially. The berries in tbe lower districts that are grown upon the sandy soil, are nearly all gone, bui, the put; bus In tbe heavier clay soils will yet pro duce for ten days or two weeks, while the Urapper and Alt. llooil district! will continue to ship berries the hat anoe of the month. In many respeots this has boon a very peculiar season. Tbe berries have come and gone in a more rapid succession than in previous years. Many of tbe growers bave been but prised at the shortness of the ship ping season. Tbe prions bavo been very steady throughout the season, and thete has not been a very per ceptible fluctuation in the cash filter ings. Ocod berries have been firm around the 12 murk. The lateness of the hour however, prevented the carrying out this pro gram, and about the only feasable plan leit was to hold an informal re ception at the depot. The Hood Kivor Commercial club and the Stiawberry Growers union presented tbe visitois with seveinl orates ot Hood Kiver's best strawbet ries. The visitors were more than pleied with this token of good will. They ditributeda variety of souvenirs among tba local merchant as an ad veitisemeut of their lespective busi ness. Tbe train carrying the company was most profusely decorated with Portland roses The good women ot that oity bad taken possession of the train while tbe guests were out sight seeing, and upon their retain they found the cars a literal bower of tows. One of the occupants of the oar had forgotten to take his night dress from the hook as he left the train, consequently it beoame a spec tal object for deooratou by tbe Port land ladles, and as tbe good brother returned to bis apartment be found his night dress most artistically dec orated with the famous Portland roses. One of tho most prominent sooial emits of tbe reason was a farewell shower given at tbe home of Hon. E. L. Smith and wife Tuesday after noon from 3 to 6 o'clock, in honor of Miss Ethel Hobards, who will leave this city to be married on tbe 18th ot this moutb to a veiy prominent busi ness man ot Mosoow, Idaho. Miss Kobards bas been one of tbe most popular teachers who bas ever t augbt in the Hood Klver schools, and has been very popular in sooial circles during ber stay in this oity. Her mauy friends are loth to sea ber depart. The home of Mr. and Mrs. E. L. Smith was most beautifully deoorated for the event. The hall was one pro fusion of roses and other flowers which were most tastefully displayed. The spacious parlor was wreathed iu roses and delicate vines, wbiob were entwined about tbe pictures on the walls, and so arranged as to pre sent a uio-jt exoellent combination of beauty and symmetry. Tbe dining room was deoorated with Carolina Testout roses and mock orange. Ibis dinplny was most tastefully propor tioned and most exquisitely arranged. The table decorations, of pink and . ,4 r-i If Pine Grove Methodist Church Dedicated recently at Pine Grove, Oregon, as a memorial to the late Daves Divers who was the generous donor to was bikini and completed under the pastorate of the Uev. C. II. Clark. white, with a deliecate vine tanning along the border, aud a beautiful pink caudulabram adorning tbe cen ter, was a very handsome airauge ment for the festal board npon wbiob to serve tbe repast. Muoh credit Is due Mrs. Wm. Stew art and Mrs. Dr. Watt for the manner in which the home was so beautfully decorated and the eutertaining of the guests, which was so decorous in every respect. The farewell Bhower consisted prin cipally of obinaware and linens. Among other things Miss Kobards re ceived a daiuty Haviland china set, which was beautifully band decor ated. All ot the gifts were substan tial and scrvioable. About 40 guests were present to participate In this expression of es teem in whiob Miss Kobards Is held, and this company thoroughly enjoyed the elegant repast consisting ot ioe cream and cake served by six young ladies dressed in white. Mrs. E. L. The tower is 1H feet bigb and 12 feet square at the base. The frame is or solid steel and closely tied together with heavy wire cables. A ladder extends from the ground to tbe top of tbe tower.
