Ha waa in the Ulacier ottloe one day laat week and bia admiration for the Hood River country and the climate ia unlimited. II la talk waa interesting, not only about the valley, but also about con ditions in the atrip of land that home seekers fought for when it was opened for settlement. As to conditions in the Cherokee ntrip Mr. Cooper said' "Condition there are very bad. While many parte of it are fertile, 01 ops have proved uncertain and climatio aomiitiona are not reliable. The prinotpal oropa have been ootton and potatoes. The ootton orop is a failure about two yeara out of three, owing to the oold weather and pota toes have not proved a proflable orop there either. For some time there has been a atruggle going on to aeoure statehood. The more progressive oi the residents want the territory creat ed into a state, but there Is an ele ment of grafters that want it to re main as a territory. This baa been a great drawbaok to the country and has worked aaainat ita development. "Before 1 left there I waa told that I would freeze to death in Oregon, but in all mv travels, not only in the west, but in the south, foi I am a na tive of Georgia. 1 have never found i finer climate than that at Iiood Rlv er.
