This is a handsome well-propor tioned white bull, weight 2000 pounds, and took first prize in his class and the reserve champion prize. Lunde Oregon De kol (25, 563), 6 years old, a beautiful mark ed animal, took the first prize, champion and grand championship awards, the latter calling for a gold medal, in the aged class, of bulls. This animal weighs 2000 pounds and was second in weight of all the bulls, exhibited of every breed. He is kept in good breed ing flesh and if in fat stock condi tion would eaily tip the beam at 3300 and possibly more. Among the cows Virgo Beauty 4ths De Kol (05,876), to be three years old November 21, took 4th prize as a 2 year-old. This animal is really a very fine cow, but of rather small size. She was given first place in the livestock show of the Louisiana Purchabe Expe dition. Chloe Mechthilde, 49,537, 7- years old, was first in the aged class, also receiving champion and grand -championship award. This beautifully v marked, cow weighs 1300 pounds' and has the official A. "If a general-purpose breed is one that is equally valuable for each and every leading purpoxe tor which cattle are used, it is not such a breed. This breed exceles in milk production, it is superior for veal production and valuable for beef production. If this com bination of qualities defines a general-purpose breed it is such a breed. For generations the natur al conditions under which thss cattle have been developed have been most favorable for this com bination of qualities. Looking upon one of its model cows, the broad lein and rump seems just the place for the growth of the finest quality of beef and a fit sup. port of a capacious udder. The straight quarteis and well rounded body cannot detract from milk pro duction. Her calves are large at birth and they grow and fatten with great rapidity. In Holland and Belgium this combination of qualities and o-es is universal. "Quantity of production and persistency of milking during long periods are well known character istics of this breed. Dropping her first calf at about two years old, an average cow of this breed, if well fed and cared for, will pro duce from 6000 to GOOO pounds of milk in ten months, and she will increase this pioduction eicb and every year, until at 5 years old she will give from 7000 to '.XXX) pounds. The quality of this mi.k will range from 3 to 4 per cent fat ' and from 9 to 10 per cent solids not fat. If fed to the extent of their ability to digest and assimilate food the ma jority of these cows will exceed this production. Before the intro duction of this breed, from 3600 to 4000 pounds per anum were regis tered as extreme high averages for cows in this country. We think it safe to affirm that the introduction of this breed has raised , directly or indirecttiy, the average pro duction of American cows from 1500 to 2000 pounds.
