Frank' Payne, Who ownes a section of land in Scappoose valley has demonstrated the fact that good paint can be made from the deposit found there. A good grade ot lignite coal has been discovered and only awaits the pick of the miner and , transporta tion facilities to place it npon the b Portland , market the best in the Northwest. - It is hardly necessary for us at this time to go. into a de tailed statement regarding the coal measures. Suffice it to say ' that there is an abundance of good coal and iron in the countyji that only requires. , the effort of capital and labor to bring it out. . Several creameries and separators are preparing the raw material for market in the shape of "cream, cheese and butter. The town has .excellent schocl and church facilities as well as good business men to supply the de- j mands of the people.; At the stock show now being held in ' Portland three of the dairy ranches of this, county received prizes on their stock. Horticulture and agriculture flourishes wherever there is a clear ing large enough to start a farm or an orchard. There is j et a large crop 0 big trees to be harvested in this sec tion, end will hardly 'be com pleted without the construction of a railroad and some large saw mills.
