Marketing Potato Crops.
In line with the classic case of tbe
oyster shippers, cited by President
Hsdley of isle university in his book
on Railroad Transportation, is the case
o the Aroostook potato growers brought
by President Tuttle of the Boston A
Maine railroad before the senate com
mittee on interstate commerce. Noth-
ng could better show how a railorad
works for the Interest of the localities
which it serves.
A main dependence of the farmers of
the Aroostook region is the potato crop,
sggregating annually eight to ten mil
lion bushels which find a market large-
y in Boston and the adjacent tbickly
settled regions of New England. The
competition of cheap water transporta
tion from Maine to all points along the
New England coast keeps railroad
teright rates on these potatoes always
at a very low level.
Potatoes are also a considerable out
put of the track farms of Michigan.
