The total tax lery for thi year is Bills, which w ill amount to f T4,7T2..V). apportioned as follow: Mat tax, JM3 per cent, or l083.1k. School Wry, J .OOl'CU per cent, or $16,7V.7$. The road fund levy is six mill, and will vain i1.V4i!Vi? Than a.i.I fn trust mills for court bouse, which will raise $Tirn72. Then the county general fund and the soldiers iind tailor indigent turd amounts to .0104.27 per cent cm the assessed valuation for the fornter and ,0000.33 per cent for the latter,. making a total for the two of 32.220.3$, inclu ding the court house fund as above stated. The Rrcitrrsx took the stand two weeks ago that 22 mill was suffic ient to run this county for one year and keep the roads in good repair. "Ve still stand by the proposition notwithstand ing the court, in its unwisdom, has en fit tolery 21) mill. Now tome of the school districts are compelled to levy a t mills tax is order to run their schools for six months,, and this, with the levy jpit made by the court, would make 38 mills, or nearly 4 per cent on the taxa ble wealth of the district. There is lit tle hope of Columbia county getting any three per cent Eastern capital to locate here where it will take it all but one mill for taxes in the most favored loca tion of the county. For we know that the property of this county is assessed for all it is worth, and in some cases a considerable more. The following is taken from the first biennial report of the Bureau, of Labor Ststistkt and Inspector of Factories and Workshops, in a pamphlet compiled by 0. P. HofT, sommissioner, bearing on the state of Oregon. That portion re lating to Columbia county reads : Fop tdation, 6237. Very little stony land. Iron found in county. Roads along the Columbia river front are in fairly good condition, those leading over the hills to the interior are good during the sum mer months. Roads are kept up by general and special tax levy. Veins of coal have been found in the county, but of an inferior quality. Timber is the principal wealth of the county. Five! well equipped logging railroads, and nu-j merous logging camps that haul their product to the Columbia-river and its tributaries. Timber is of the best quality, consisting of Gr, cedar, epr-ce, larch, hemlock, and oak. . "Wood is used fcr fuel. The average price is $3 per cord. Principal crop is hay. All va rieties of grain and vegetables are raised but not extensively. Dairying and cat tle raising are the principal industries. County has several breeders of thor- OOghbred cattle. County 18 very healthv. "Water is the very best. Climatecool in wanner and mild in winter. Trans - , , . porutwn by water and rail the very best. The railroad parallels the Colum- bia river, which bounds the county on tbe east and the north. The poor are cared for by special contract. Xo poor farm. Numerous streams suitable for floating logs to ti.arket. The entire area of Columbia county has been sur veyed, and there are only 700 acres that have not teen appropriated, owing to the great value of it8 timber. The total i 'rea;0f the county is 433,740 acres. St. ri.i it . I Helens is the county seat. ; ToTheHocialista. I feel to rejoice today because our eanse is onward in our precinct, county, state, Umted States and the whole iWprld. Our numbers are increasing eo rapidly that the "powers that be" are beginning to tremble." I feel anxious at this time for the cause in Columbia county. Think, only two short years , more and we will have to stand up and be counted again. It seems to me that ;'it will be- well for ns to organize our selves for a systematic campaign. I , think-it well to hold a series of meet ings in different parts of the county eo that we may understand ourselves and work- harmoniously together. I pro tpose a-meeting at Iloaltorr or in that jPart Of the county ; one at Clatskanie also one in the Xehalem. It seems to me that this will be the natural division of the county. Now I should like to (bear;this matter discussed quickly so thati we can get down to work.
