As fast as the timber is cut off, the land should be cleared and turned into small farms and orchards There is less danger to ' standing timber where th9 land is 'clear of undergrowth and brush 'from logging and slashings. POMONA GRANGE. The Columbia County Pomona Grange' met in regular session at Goble, on Saturday, August 6th 1904, with Worthy Master, W. A. Young, in the first official chair. At roll call, all officers were pre sent except secretary, gate keeper, 'assistant steward and treasurer. The pro tern appointments were It. IL Mitchell, secretary; L.Burn ijam , gate keeper ; G . W. Jo r dan , Assistant steward, and P. Lovegren, treasurer. 4 The minutes of the last regular meeting were then read and ap proved. : The following" officers were call ed upon and made verbal reports: 'W. A. . Young, Master, reported tavirlg attended the state grange at Cortsllis. . That the hew by-laws vere adopted' a bou t as repor ted by the committee; That the grange is HoiDg godd work in the county. In fact he thought the grange there was in a very prosperous condition with a membership of about ."4. Scappoose Grange prospering, with 40 members. Sister Lovelace reported Beaver Vallet Grange alive and with 50 in good standing. Cedar Grove Grange has a mem bership of 4S. Has a new hall well under way, with sufficient material subscribed to complete it. Clatskanie Grange had lost three members since last report, and ow ing to the busy season, the atten dance was very light. Milton Grange, of Houlton, re ported that they had been holdiug no meetings during July and Aug ust, but expected to be in good shape by first meeting night in September. Rainier, Yankton, and Mayger granges were not reported, Quincey Grange reported 35 in good standing with good-attendance. Goblfs Grange reported 55 mem bers. A good team tor degree work is to be one cf the features ot Goble grange. Deer Island Grange initiated 4 during the quarter and have 46 in good standiDg. S. L. Holaday, secretry, tendered his resignation in writing. It was accepted and upon motion grange proceeded to tlect a secretary. The first ballot resulted in the election ofR. II. Mitchell, he having" re ceived 42 out of the 55 votes cast. The chair appointed Mrs. I. H. Copeland, Mrs. M. M. Farrell and James Barr as committee on me morial resolutions. Upon motion it was decided to' select an executive committee, and after first ballot, there being no cnoice, the secretary was instructed to cast the ballot of the grange for the thrte highest: Sister Lovelace, Sister Copeland and Brother J. W. Armstrong. Those three and the Worthy Master' and Secretary were consti tuted the executive committe of the grange. This committee was in structed to take up the matter of an exhibit of the products of Colum bia county at the session of the Na tional grange in Portland in the middle of November. The com mittee were instructed to corre spond with A. F. Miller, of Sell wood station, relative to exhibits. A recess was taken until 1 :30 p m. and an excellent banquet was served by Goble grange. The following resolution sent in by Beaver, Valley grange, and after much discussion adopted. Rbmolvei). Grange-then took a recess until 8 p. m., during hich time a line lunch was served, and the visiting members took a stroll through the town. Grange convened at 8 p. ni. and was opened in the 5th degree, with State Master, B. G. Leedy, in the chair, during the conferring of the degree, A class of 17 members were conducted to the courts of Pomona, and instructed in the mysteries of the 5th degree, and all partook of the bounties provid ed for the occasion.
