'Hermit of MeBIgote' MEDFORD MAIL TRIBUNE, MEDFOKD, OREGON SUNDAY, DEC EMBER 22, 1963 is amihar By CLEVE TWITCHEI.L Mall Tribune Staff Writer HELLGATE CANYON - The backwoods along the Rogue river between Grants Pass and the coast are inhabited here and there by individuals the outside world has labeled ' characters Most of them keep to them selvesand for that reason few residents of the more populated parts of Southern Oregon know of them But almost anyone who has driven across the bridge at Hell gate Canyon half a dozen times or more probably has seen Buckner Wilson Trevillian, known by some as the "hermit of Hellgate" and by others as just "Prospector Buck. A Familiar Sight With his beard and walking stick, he is a familiar sight around the canyon. He fre quently stands down along the road by the bridge, stopping tourists to tell them stories about "Indian gold" in the hills. Buck himself lives in the hills about a mile and a half up above the canyon. He occupies a house in the woods which was constructed of scrap materials gathered from town and the surrounding forest. The house is built around several trees which are incor porated into its design. It's a split-level dwelling, and as one observer put it, it may not be the most elegant split level in the world, but it can't be beat for economy of cost and upkeep. 'Modern' Guest House Trevillian also maintains a somewhat more "modern" guest house. Here visitors are wel come to stay overnight "as long as they bring their own grub." Buck seems to delight in en tertaining. He is full of yarns about Indian days. Other resi dents of the area don't take the stories very seriously, but they admit the fellow serves as a rather intriguing one-man chamber of commerce for the area. Although he admits to being (57, he scoots up and down the trail to and from his abode like i - m j i. J mm fmmW - r- - ."S(t:a.&. HIDEAWAY IN THE HILLS There's no place like home at least, none quite like Buckner Wilson Trevillian's home near Hell gate Canyon. His home, built of scrap materi als, may be seen at right. At left is a more modern guest house, which visitors are per mitted to occupy if they bring their own food. Last Studebaker Rolls Off Lines SOUTH BEND, Ind. (UPD The last Studebaker car pro duced in the United States was scheduled to roll off the assem bly lines at the South Bend plant Friday. The milestone car ended fit years of domestic automotive production by the company, which started in the highway transportation field making cov ered wagons. It came in the same year other automakers were posting records as the best year ever. Studebaker closed the plant to photographers and planned no fanfare for the event. "We're still making and selling cars," a spokesman said, "and we're not really ending production." Automotive production in the highly diversified company now will be carried on at the Hamil ton, Ont., plant. In the Trove to Canada, about 6.000 Studebaker white collar and hourly rated workers will be thrown out of work at the South Bend plant, the firm's onlv U.S. carbuilding outlet. However, Studebaker officials have maintained the nameplale will not die in this country. In stead, they said, dealers will re ceive cars built in Canada. Parts and other necessary items also will be supplied to dealers. a mountain goat, leaving guests half his age puffing along be hind. He goes up and down at reg ular intervals, and at least once a week gets a ride into Merlin or Grants Pass to obtain the few supplies he needs. Leaves Notes Buck lets his acquaintances know whether he's home or not by leaving notes in his "mail box," a tin can secured to a spot along the trail just above the Hellgate bridge. When he's home he leaves a note to that effect. Prospective visitors thereby are assured that they won't have to make the hike up to his place for naught. When he isn't entertaining tourists and curiosity seekers, Trevillian spends his time ex ploring the area, prospecting and feeding the animals in the woods around him. "The deer used to come right into the house, so I had to build a fence," he remarked. Trevillian says he was born in Virginia and crossed the conti nent as a boy. Since then he has lived in various areas of the west. Estimates of how long he has lived in his Hellgate hide away vary from four to 12 years. Oilier residents of the area say he began appearing on the road by the bridge regularly about three years ago. Beneficiaries Reminded To Note Address Chanqe Aliun..l, j : l . .. ... "Although one dnv is much like every other for most peo ple, the fourth of the month has special meaning for some 19 million persons," according to Edward B. .lacobson, district manager of Social Security of fice in Medford. The fourth day of each month is the day on which the 19 mil lion expect to receive their monthly social security checks. "And on the fourth of every month," he added, "the phones at the social security offices across the nation got busy as calls come in about delayed new address, but forget to notify the post office and Hie social se curity office. Such forgetfulness can result in delay, with the next social security check going back to the Treasury Department as unde liverable, Jacobson noted. With the millions of checks is sued each month, work in get ting a month's supply ready for mailing gets started two or three weeks before the mailing Advance notice of a change of I aocircss is desirable, hut even a nho,.l,5 " i siiruien cnange ot address need inn iiirnii n ui-irty in kcviiii ine monthly social security check, if the post office serving the old People call whenever their chocks do. not appear on schedule, he said. But the delay, more often than not, is the result of forgetfulness of carelessness on the part of the disappointed beneficiary, Jacobson added. Continually on Move "Our nation is continually on the move, with many thousands of addresses being changed each day," Jacobson said. Many social security beneficiaries re member to tell their kith and kin, their magazine publishers and their creditors about the address is given a prompt re port of the new address. FOUND INNOCENT GOLD HILL Clyde Leslie Walker, Gold Hill, was found in nocent of a charge of angling for steelhead without having a salmon-steelhead punch card in possession by a six-man jury re cently in Gold Mill .Justice Court. The presiding judge was Norman R. Matteson. Sight' 1 HELLGATE MAILBOX Buck Trevillian, who resides in the hills above Hellgate Canyon, keeps a "mailbox" down near the road between Merlin and Galice. In it he leaves a note to lot visitors know when he is at home. It's another mile hike uphill from the mailbox to Trevillian's buildings. ril-3- 6-W S TAR G AZER ) By CLAY R.
