Brookings Man Held For Impersonation SAX DIEGO, Calif. (UPI) - Police today held a man with ; Oregon identification papers on i susP'cion of impersonating Earl Warren Jr.. son of the U. S. I ;'" - ' jusiuc. Police said the suspect carried an employment card identitying him as Arthur Michael Warren 26. Brookings, Ore., but main tained that he was the former governor's son. The arrest was made Tuesday night after the manager of the El Cortez hotel, Jame Gellatly, contacted the wife of the chief justice's son and was told her husband was in Chile. Gellatly told police the sus pect had incurred a large bill, taped a television interview and made news releases stating that the chief justice who heads a blue ribbon panel investigating the assassination of President Kennedy was coming to San Diego on secret business. Mother Leads Children To Safety OREGON CITY (UPI) -Mrs. Evelyn Rasch, 32, led her seven children to safety here Tuesday when a fire leveled their three bedroom home. She said the children's Christ mas presents were destroyed with other conlenls of the house. The father, William, is a heavy equipment operator. The Rasch children are aged 2 to 10. Clinic Opened The chest X ray clinic at Sacred Heart Hos pital, sponsored by the Jackson County Tuberculosis and Health Association, will be open from 2 to 5 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 19. The clinic is staffed by volun teers of the association, and members of Providence Guild each week and is open through out the year for the convenience of all persons in the area, 15 years of age and older. Rancher Hospitalized Morris Prather, rancher and cattle buy er in the Montague. Calif., area, is confined to Siskiyou General Hospital. His wife reports that he is responding to treatment. Injurv Suffered Mike Reyn olds, son of Mr. and Mrs. Del Reynolds, ranchers in the Little Shasta area near Montague, suf fered a broken arm while taking part in activities at Yreka High School. He was taken to Siskiyou General Hospital. He is allowed to receive visitors. Building Permits The Med ford building department Mon day issued permits to Richard H. Travis to restore his resi dence at 1100 Mira Mar Ave. at an estimated cost of $18,000; William J. Williams to erect a residence valued at $28,000 at 123 S. Nepal Teacher To Visit in Medford Shubh Kant Lai, 26, of Nepal will visit Medford early next year under the auspices of the International Teacher Develop ment Program in cooperation with Ihe Teacher Education pro- gram of the University of Mich igan and the Oregon State De partment of Education. Lai will visit Medford between Jan. 8 and Feb. 15, and will live at the home of Mr. and Mrs. H. L. Roberts, lOllli S. Oakriale Ave. His base school will be Medford High School. Calif., motel across the border from where he was ap pearing in a Nevada gambling spa with the Tommy Dorsev orchestra. He was released in the Los Angeles area 54 hours later after his famous father paid $210,000 ransom for his re turn. All but a small part of the marked money was returned. The younger Irwin insisted he was nol a "stnolie" in turning his brother over to federal agenls. "My brother came lo mv home in Imperial Reach (Calif.) and was sick and tired of his involvement in this situation," he said. "He knew that no mat ter where the FBI was on the case at this lime, it was just a matter of time before he would be caught," the brother said. Five Accidents Are Checked by Police Five automobile accidents were investigated by Medford police Tuesday. No serious in juries were reported. Rickey Lee Johnson, 7, of 1501 N. Klamath Murder Hearing Continues KLAMATH FALLS (UPI) -The prosecution continued Its case today in the first degree murder trial of Archie Foster, 26. Salem. Fosler is charged with the fatal shooting of Mrs. Eunice Hiss, 37, llealty, at Ilcalty April 22. He body was found in hor car in front of her home about 11 p.m. on that date. The prosecution began its case in Circuit Court here Tuesday by presenting five witnesses. Dr. George Nicholson of Kla math Falls, a pathologist, testi fied that Mrs. Biss died about 10 p.m. on the 22nd. Nicholson supported Ihe de fense contention about the lime of death. Cliff, who died in 1937. Survivors include one son, Cameron Cliff, Burns, Ore.; one daughter, Mrs. Barbara Toner, Central Point; one step-daughter, Mrs. Gertrude Smith, Leba non, Ore.; one sister. Mrs. Ida Tucker, Portland, Ore.; and three grandchildren. Benefit Claims To Be Recomputed SALEM (UPI) -All unem ployment benefit claims present-1 ly in effect which have a bene fit yea r expiring on or afler Jan. 1, 1!)64, must be recom puted, Atty. Gen. Robert Y. Thornton said today. This includes claims on which maximum benefits have heen paid under the law in effect prior to Jan. 1, 1964, even though the benefit year expires after that date, Thornton said. The opinion is in answer to a request from the employment commission concerning changes in the law enacted by the 19t3 legislature. The re-computation may pro vide additional benefits to some and could result in lower bene fils for some, or even eliminate some claims, Thornton said. Oil Off Oregon Coast Said Possible NEWPORT, Ore. (UPI) -An Oregon State University geo logist says there is a good pos sibility ot oil beneath the ocean floor off Ihe Oregon coast. Dr. John Byrne said a study of rock samples taken in recent months reveals formations simi lar to those off the coast of Cal ifornia. He said two promising areas are a rock outcropping 17 miles west of Yaquina Bay and one 35 miles west of Heceta Head. Bolh areas are beyond the three mile limit and come under fed eral jurisdiction. Van Hoomissen's Proposal Shelved PORTLAND (UPI) -Multnomah County Commissions re acted coolly Tuesday to a sug gestion by Dist. Ally. George Van Hoomissen that they assign a deputy district attorney al most full time to the 15 legis lature. Van Hoomissen said such a move would be in the best in terests of Multnomah County citizens. He said the legislature had been considering an increas ing number of matters each ses sion many of which impose sub stantial financial obligations on the county. Commissioner M. James I Gleason said it was more than a year until the next session and that he felt any legislative representative should come di rectly from the commissioner's office. Freeman loday set the 1964 sugar marketing quota for the United States at 9,800,0001 oils and announced partial import quotas for foreign supplying countries. The marketing quota Is 600,- 0(H) Ions below Ihe 10.4-million tons that comprised the mar keting qunla (or 1963. Freeman authorized for pur chase and importation dur ing the January-October, 1964 period I million Ions of global quota sugar. This sugar is part of (he 1.504,00(1 tons of quota withheld from Cuba. The House passed and sent to Ihe Senale a bill In permit the Capital Transit Lines, Inc., to file a claim for S;t,50(l in federal gasoline taxes paid before Feb ruary 1959. A report from the House Judi ciary Committee said the employe-owners had run the busline for four years before they found out they could get a refund. The measure, introduced by Rep. Walter Norblad, R-Ore., would permit the company to claim the refund even though it normally must be requested within three months of the end of a fiscal year. Employes Took Over The report said drivers, mech anics and other employes, who work for less than $4.81)6 a year, took over the system in 1958 to provide a "much-needed public service" afler the previous man agement could no longer operate it profitably. The commiltce said the bus linn did nol have an attorney and that It was not even a member of the American Transit Association. "Under these circumstances," Ihe report said, "it is not dif ficult lo understand why the owner-operators were not aware of their right to a refund." Bailiff Protests Retirement Age PORTLAND (UPI) James Cormack, a bailiff (or Circuit Judge Eugene K. Oppenheimer, has gone to court himself. Cormack is 89 years old. He was notified recently that under a 1903 state law which makes retirement of county employes mandatory at age 72 he will not he on Ihe payroll after Jan. 1. 1 Cormack claims he is not a county employe. In a petition ol controversy Cormack asks the county Cir cuit Court lo decide whether he is or is not a county employe. The outcome could have re percussions. It the suit should result in a decision he is not a county employe, bailiffs may no longer be eligible to receive county pensions. Cormack says his health is good and he is not ready to re tire. Salem Woman, 37, Dies in Car Fire JORDAN VALLEY, Ore (UPI) -A Salem woman burned lo death near here Tuesday In Ihe flaming crash of an automobile. Oregon police said the woman was Vera B. Harris, 37. Her husband, Will red, 3(1, was driving Ihe car and was hos pitalized with superficial burns.
