South Eugene comes here with one game be hind it played earlier this What kind of an adversary can the Hurricane expect? Big Man Back Said Joe Berger in the Eugene Register-Guard: "The big man is back at South Eugene and so is the fast break. "The combination paved the way for a 56-37 win over South Salem Tuesday night at South Eugene. , , "The big man is John Pink staff, the 6-foot, 6-inch senior getting 20 points and 21 re bounds in the 27 minutes he played. , " 'Sure we like to fast break,' said Axeman Coach Hank Ku- IN TORNADO LINKUP Mike Barnes, above, 5-10 senior Ict tcrman, is a probable starter for the Mcdford High basketball team which meets South Eugene here tonight and Saturday night at Hedrick gym. For tonight's game with Mcd ford Kuchera has indicated a starting five including Pinkstaff, Myrmo, Roche, Dick Shearer and Bob Coleman. Recognized Ai Best Pinkstaff, an all - stater last season, is recognized as the top big .. an in the state. Roelandt believes in having his Tornado cagers run when they can, too. And, that could mean free-wheeling fracases be tween the clubs. The Medford mentor has in dicated a starting crew of Bill Enyart, Bruce Bertrand, Larry Vowell, Mike Barnes and Bill Destroyer Signed The Destroyer, hooded rascal of the wrestling mat, has a standing offer of $1,000 to any one who can break his figure four leg lock and he found a ready and willing taker in the person of Luther Lindscy last night. Negotiations on a contract were under way in the dressing room and after a 50-50 split of the purse was agreed upon, despite The Destroyer's insist ence that he have the larger share, Lindsey asked The De stroyer if he paid a bonus "if a broken neck went along with a broken leg lock . This ircd rhe Destroyer and it took two other wrestlers to pry them apart. After calm was restored, Matchmaker Elton Owen signed Lindscy and The Destroyer for the main event at the local armory for Thursday night, Dec. 26. Revenge Gained Earlier, Lindscy and Nick Kozak gained their desired re venge by taking two out of three falls from Soldal Gorky and Dirty Don Dufly in a grudge match which resulted from a disputed decision two weeks earlier. Kozak took the first full on Duffy with an airplane spin and Duffy evened the score on Ko zak with an arm lock. Lindscy pinned Gorky for the decider in one of the wildest matches here in several weeks. The Destroyer, who was to have wrestled Nick Bockwinkle coast champion, in a non-title match, refused to do so unless Bockwinklc's title was at stake which Bickwinklc refused to do. So Owen shifted opponents and Bockwinkle, after being pressed hard by roughhouse Art Mahal ik, won the deciding fall on a foul after Mahalik threw Boc winkle out of the ring and wouldn't let him re-enter. Bing Ki Lee, a fast and clever Chinese master who was to hove wrestled Mahalik, took on The Destroyer and lost the lone fall. Doug Olson and Rich Knight also have been working "in there" this week. Players Ailing The Tornado has its share of ailing players this week. Hal Holman turned his ankle in the Linficld JV game last Saturday and the injury is complicated by blisters. Larry Stockman has missed two days of practice be cause of illness and Jim Allen turned his ankle on Wednesday. Holman has not worked out except to shoot a bit. Roelandt said that, "if he can run or move," he will suit down but he doubted that Holman would be able to go. Stockman was expected back in school today but Roelandt remarked that, if he sees duty, it will be as "a last resort." There was indica tion that Allen might be able to play. The Black Tornado turned in creditable performances last week against the Willamette and Linficld Jayvccs and left strong impression that it will be a con tender this season for the South ern Oregon Conference crown it shared last campaign. In the 6:30 p.m. preliminary games Medford sophomores meet Eagle Point junior varsity tonight and Prospect varsity meets the Medford jayvees on Saturday. Glide, Sutherlin On Phoersi PHOENIX - Phoenix High's basketball team will engage in return action in reverse order this week end. It meets the same rivals as last week with floors and nights switched. Phoenix will journey to Glide this evening and will entertain Sutherlin here on Saturday night. The Pirates will be after re peat triumphs. They beat Suth erlin 61-56 and Glide 42-41 in opening scraps of the season. Coach Eldon Durham said he looks for a tough game this evening after the close conflict last Saturday with Glide. I know we'll have to be stronger on the boards and in ball-handling," he remarked. Board Work Game conditions, among them ball control, have had attention this week. The Pirates have been at it hard on rebounding, especially under the offensive backboards. He reported that Eugene Hill and Danny Bceson have been leading in these drills and (hat Hill may get a starting call because of his work. Some work has been done on zone defense. The coach indi cated that the Pirates have aim ed for a measure of improve ment each week and he ex pressed hope that the offense has been improved by 10 or 15 points in this week's drills. The Eagles will be at Brook ings tonight and will oppose i Glide at Eagle Point on Satur day evening as they continue to prime for the Rogue League slate ahead. Bates indicated that he'll go with a combination of Lonnie Mesloh and George Adams at the posts. Bill Ayres and Woutcr Leeuwcnburgh at forwards and Bob Colpitts at Guard. This crew will give the Eagles more strength under the boards and, Bales hopes, a little more of fensive punch. Mesloh Scores 34 Mesloh, who scored 34 points in two games last week end, is 6-5. Adams is 6-2, Leeuwcn burgh 6-1 and Ayres 6 feet. The Eagles have drilled this week on offensive patterns and timing and yesterday were to work against various zone de fenses. Bates has reported good prac tices with good hustle and high spirit and indicated that his club is looking for a couple of good ball games. The Eagles at the start of this week had thought they would encounter Brookings and Glide in reverse order and Bates hop ed that the necessary adjust ments have been accomplished. Eagle Point will be after its first victory of the new season. The Eagles fell to Crater and Douglas last week end. Prairie View, j St. Johns Vie j SACRAMENTO (UPI) -The nation's small college football championship will be decided Saturday when Prairie View A&M of Texas and St. Johns University of Minnesota meet in the third annual Camellia Bowl. i For Prairie View, the game offers a double opportunity. The Panthers can become the first all-Negro team ever to win a national football title. Actually, just showing up will mark a milestone for the South western Athletic Conference champs, who over the years have been victors of four myth ical national Negro titles. That's because Prairie View will be the first Negro school ever to compete in a recognized nation al championship football game. MODERN WAY!
