Sprfkala 1MJ) She Uses Eggbcater Tail To Whip Up Nest for Eggs Imagine a bug with an egg beater like arrangement in the tail section. The froghopper has one, and in the early fall these comical little insects are busy shipping up a mess of bubbles and attaching them to a weed stem or a garden plant.- lt will be a safe nursery for the baby froghoppers that will hatch from the eggs the moth er deposits in the frothy incu bator. The young will be cozy and safe until they are strong enough to break out of the bubble - house next spring. If you look carefully most anywhere weeds are growing in the fall, you should find a whit ish colored mass of bubbles on a weed stem. This irregular mass of frothy material may resemble a gob of soapsuds. Small boys, usually unfamiliar with the objects, call it "frog spit" but seldom do the boys know that small froghoppers are hiding in the mass. Now that you know what to look for, when you find one, open it up and you will find the tiny froghoppers hiding in their frothy castle. And He Hops This strange little character is called the "froghopper" for the best of reasons. He does look something like a frog, a very, very small one, and when he decides to go anywhere, he hops. If he is suddenly fright ened, he actually jumps. Other folks, especially boys that know something of the insect's habits, call it a "spittle-bug" because of the frothy bubbles the bug whips up with his rearend egg beater. A full grown froghopper is barely an inch in length, but is usually fat and broad. The body is brown or black with a generous sprinkling of dots, bars and dashes on the wing covers. They are classed as sucking in sects, and when they become too numerous they are destruc tive to plants. There are vari eties that infest pine trees and at times do considerable dam age. When mother froghopper de cides to lay her eggs, in order to assure the world that next year will also have its full com plement of froghoppers, she se lects a fork in a plant stem. There she begins the frosting for what is to be the cradle for her offspring. She expels a liquid from her body, which is later whipped into a foam. Mix ed with air, the material takes the-form of tiny bubbles massed tightly together. Within a few minutes the foam hardens and becomes almost permanent. Forms Protection In the center of the frothy mass she lays an egg. During the time of the egg's incubation, and even after the tiny one is hatched, the bubble mass forms a protecting wall against cold, rain and most enemies. Other insects that might want to eat the baby froghopper cannot pen etrate the tough mass. When the necessary strength is acquired, the baby can force its way out. When fleshly whipped by the regbeater tail, the bubble looks clean and wetly shiny, by the time the egg is hatched, the mass becomes gray and dirty. That is the way it was intend ed; it becomes inconspicuous and is overlooked by enemies. The baby leaves its bubbly castle, lives for a little wnile, and by the following fall she (if it is a Riii froghopper) will whip up a bubble mixture, cre ating a bubble-berth for anoth er generation of froghoppers. Liquor Ad Dispute Brings Protests PORTLAND (UPI) - A pro posal to relax in-state advertis ing on 1'iuor has touched off a wave of protest. The Oregon Liquor Control Commission said it has received numerous letters objecting to a revision of advertising rules for alcholic beverages. The Oregon Council on Alco hol Problems and numerous churches around the state have indicated their opposition in let ters to the Commission. A public hearing on the pro posal will be held here Feb. 15. In June, 1932, Congress passed what is popularly known as the Lindbergh law which had the effect of allowing the FBI to help investigate kidnaping cases. The law made it a federal crime to transport any persons across state lines to hold them for ransom, reward or for any other purpose. Section Amended -As originally written, the law provided that it could be as sumed the victim had been tak en across a state line if no trace of him could be found seven days after the kidnaping. On Aug. 6, ,1956, this section was amended to make the waiting period only 24 hours. This change was made short ly after Peter Howard Wein berger, a one-month-old child, was kidnaped from his home on Long Island July 4, 1956, and later found dead. His kidnaper was convicted and executed. There was some feeling at the time that the FBI might have been able to apprehend t h e child's abductor more quickly if it had not been restrained from son of Tacoma, Wash., Dec. 27, 1936. The boy's body was found but his abductors have never been traced. Suspects Cleared The FBI has investigated and cleared more than 25.000 sus pects in the case but there are more than 100 to be cleared. The case is similar to a 19:18 one involving Peter David Lc vine of New York, whose body was found in a bay. In both cases ransom was demanded but never paid and the abduc tor has never been located. No ransom was demanded for Marv Lou Olscn, who was kid naped in San Diego Jan. 3, 1960. Her ravaned body was found 25 miles south of the Mexican bor der but the FBI still is seeking her abductor.
