FRIDAY, Methodists To Observe Universal Bible Sunday Dr. George Roscbcrry will ob serve Universal Bible Sunday at First Methodist Church by preaching on "The Book For To day," at both morning worship services. Mrs, Keith Johnson will be soloist for both services. She will sing "The Virgin's Slumber Song." The youth choir will sing "Winter's Snow," by Ring wald, at 9:30 a.m. and the chan cel choir will sing "Good News From Heaven," by Tkach, at 11 a.m. The commission on education will sponsor a family film, "Hand in Hand," at 6 p.m. Sun day. This is the story of friend ship between a Jewish girl and a Catholic boy in which a near tragedy actually deepens their understanding of each other and their faiths. All members and friends are invited to bring their families. A baby sitter will be available for pre-schoolers and an offering will be taken to de fray the cost of the film. Both the Junior High and Senior High Methodist Youth Fellowship groups will join with the rest of the church to view the movie. The Senior will then go to the St. Mark's Episcopal Church to attend the interde nominational Singspiration at 7 p.m. The Board of Trustees will meet at the Town House Cafe at 7 a.m. Tuesday for their monthly breakfast meeting. The Becomer's Class will have their family Christmas party in the basement youth center from 3 to 6 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 14. At 6:30 p.m. Saturday the Builder's Class will have their Christmas potluck and party for their families. Adventists to Hear Speakers Three Valley Sevenlh-day Ad ventist churches will have rep resentatives of the denomina tion's publishing association as guest speakers Saturday. Andrew M. Running of the Pacific Press In Mountain View, Calif., will speak at the 11 a.m. hours in the Medford Church. Music for the worship service will bo presented by the Rosue River Academy choir under the direction of Marvin Wilson. Bonner Allen from the Port land Book and Bible House will speak at the Valley View church, and Theodore Lulls, also from Portland will bo at the Shady Point church. The denomination publishes a large number of periodicals ranging from cradle roll to senior level, as well as a variety of books in many languages. K-SriA -860 Kc 'Tht Effect of Jeiui' Coming" DECEMBER 6, 1963 Confraternity of Christian Doctrine Inducts Members Thirty-five persons were in ducted into the Sacred Heart Unit of the Confraternity of Christian Doctrine last Sunday at the annual general meeting of the group. The Very Rev. Carl Mai con ducted the enrollment ceremon ies which were held in the multi purpose room of St. Mary's High School on Black Oak Drive. Donald Sweeney, who with Mrs. Jack Batzer was co chairman for the event, acted as master of ceremonies at the afternoon program. A rt h u r Becker presided at the business meeting. Recognition was given the many persons who aided the Confraternity program during the past year, along with an explanation of each phase of work involved. Fields covered were the CCD executive board; teaching, both grade and high school; baby-sitting; transporta tion; discussion cluos; library, both public and CCD; St. Mar tha of Rome Society; holy cards and visual aids; parent-educators; apostles of good will, now an endeavor of the Legion of Mary; newcomers' welcome; and Christmas cards, the sale of which is the only source of income for the CCD. Awards Made St. Mary's Grade and High school students who have work Foreign Missions To Be Emphasized The Rev. G. O. Skaar, pastor of First Southern Baptist church will have for his sermon topic at the morning worship hour Sunday "Man's need of a Mes siah." For the evening service his message will be on "All Authority." Robert Klusman will direct the singing at both services. Mr. Klusman is also directing the choir twice a week in prepcra tion of a Christmas music pro gram. Following the Sunday evening service the Woman's Missionary Society will present a short pag- cnt cmpnasizing me Deginnings of the annual week of prayer for foreign missions which will be held at the church. The meetings will be each morning Monday through Fri day. Dec. 9 to 13 except Wednes day when t h e hour will be changed to 3 p.m. Goal for the local church is $275 as a "Lottie Moon offering, so called In hon or of the first Southern Baptist foreign missionary to China. At the present the Southern Baptist Convention is support ing 1.800 missionaries in S3 countries, much of the funds being contributed through the Lottie Moon Christmas Fund. Total coal for the nation has been set at ten million dollars. Mrs. Gilbert Skaar is direct ing the pageant. Mrs. Lois Allen is program chairman. Tonight the Siskiyou Baptist Association meeting will be held at First Southern Baptist church Grants Pass. The December meeting each year is designated "mobilization" night in the as sociation to emphasize the train in course in Christian living tor 14. An attendance goal of 100 has been set. Moderator will bo the Rev. Noel Mills, pastor of Phoenix Baptist church. Dinner will be served at 6:30 o'clock by the host church fol lowed by the program at 7:.H1 o'clock. Ascension Lutheran Announces Music The junior choir, under the direction of Mrs. Hoy Miller, will sing at the II a.m. worship service at Ascension Lutheran Church, 2017 Barnetl Road, Sun day. Their selection will be "Come 0' Come Emanuel." The Sunday School teachers met recently with Ihe Sunday School Superintendent Arthur Phillips. Advent Sermons "Prepare for the Lord's Com ing to Judgment and to Destroy This World" is the Advent topic chosen for Sunday's sermon by the Ilev. John E. himon, pastor of St. Peter's Lutheran Church. CHURCH NEWS National Religious Publicity Council The Middlers and Christian Youth Fellowships will have a dinner at 6 p.m. with the youth group from Grants Pass Chris tian Church as guests. From 7 to 8 p.m. they will have a "Hoot enanny" to which all the youth groups in the Medford Churches are invited. Six students from Northwest Christian College in Eugene will be here to sing and lead the group in folk songs. At 8:15 p.m. they will all go to the Episcopal Church for the all-city "Singspiration." Eleven high school students will leave today for a student preview at Northwest Christian College in Eugene. They will visit the campus and learn ot the various vocations in the field of religious work. Bill Brooks and the Rev. Fredrick Ross Evans will accompany the group. Tull, min ister of the Congregational church, will preach a sermon Sunday entitled "To Abound in Hope," the second in a series of Advent sermons on the theme "The Christian and His Christ." The 11 a.m. service of the Congregational church wilt be held at Hooover Grade school on Siskiyou Boulevard, the temporary meeting place of the church while a new church building is being constructed at the corner of East Jackson Street and Berkeley Way. This Sunday's service will include a reception of new members. Mrs. Margaret Doolen will be the soloist singing "What Child Is This." During the worship hour the church school will offer classes for all children and young peo ple from three years of age through eighth grade. Fireside will be held aft er the meeting. Westminster Church is located on Oakwood Drive one block south of East Main Street. GH Methodists Have New Pastor GOLD HILL - The Rev. Wil liam Stacy, recent pastor of the Methodist Church in New Mead ows, Idaho, has been appointed by Bishop A. Raymond Grant to serve as pastor of the Gold Hill Community Methodist Church. Mr. Stacy assumed his duties and gave his first sermon at the Gold Hill Church on Dec. 1. Mr. Stacy and his wife, June, with their daughter, Deidre, 4, and son, Brad, 3, arrived in Gold Hill Thanksgiving week from Idaho. They are residing in the Methodist Church Par sonage at 1118 Second Ave. Mr. Stacy replaces the Rev. Lochlen L. Gregory, who was named recently by Bishop Grant to serve as pastor of the Garcli-ner-Reedsport Methodist Church. Mr. Gregory had served as pas tor of the Gold Hill Church three years prior to his new appoint ment about two months ago. Since Mr. Gregory's leaving and until Mr. Stacy's arrival here, the pulpit was filled each Sunday by guest ministers or lay speakers. Mr. Stacy finished his semi nary at the University of Du buque at Dubuque, Iowa and was graduated in 1962. Prior to pastoring the Meth odist Church at New Meadows, Idaho he was pastor of churches at Colsbcrg and Lamont, Iowa. Unitarians To Hear Seattle Sermon Sunday the members and friends of Rogue Valley Unitar ian Fellowship will assemble at 11 a.m. in the Red Cross Build ing, SO Hawthorne St. Carl George, Ashland, will give a sermon written by the Rev. Peter Raible, minister at University Unitarian Church in Seattle. Raible is also head of the Northwest District of the Unitarian Universalis! Associa tion and will be here in Janu ary to address the local fellow ship. The sermon chosen by George is titled, "Commitment." Witnesses Announce Bible Lecture Topic Sunday at the local Kingdom Hall of Jehovah's Witnesses a Bible lecture at 4 p.m. entitled, "Relief From Tension in A Troubled World" will be given by a qualified minister. This talk will answer pertinent ques tions confronting individuals to day, and will show how the Bible can be used as a guide. f ollowing uie lecture, a Bible study entitled "How All Scrip ture Inspired by God is Bene ficial" will be conducted from the pages of the Watchtower magazines and the Bible. Sermon Series Continues Sunday "A Voice in the Wilderness" is the subject of the lesson the Rev. Katherine Bosworth, min ister of Unity Church, Holly and Haven Streets, has chosen for the 11:15 a.m. Sunday service. The text is taken from Matthew 3:3. This is the second lesson in the Christmas series "Prepa ration in the Great Search, Finding and Following the In dwelling Christ." Miss Sandra Myers will be at the organ. Mrs. H. H. Monday, Dec. 9, the board of directors will meet at the Unity Center, 3777 Jacksonville High way, at 7 p.m. The prayer ministry will meet Wednesday, Dec. 11 at U a.m. at the church. Those attending are to take their lunch. Coffee will be served. The study class will meet at 1 p.m. The Wednes day night study class will meet at 7:30 p.m. at the Unity Center. The Grants Pass and Ashland classes will meet as usual. The lesson for all study classes will be "Launch Out Into the Deep" from Ernest Wilson's new book, "Soul Power". Trinity Starts Christmas Series At the 11 a.m. worship of Trinity Baptist Church Sunday, Pastor Bruce Rogers will begin a series of sermons on the Christmas message. His sermon Sunday is entitled, "The 'Way' of the Christmas Message." Mrs. Lester Merriman will sing a solo. Trinity Baptist Church is at Griffin Creek and South Stage Roads. At 7 p.m. a discussion will be held on the question, "Can a Christian Become a Castaway?" This is one of a series of dis cussions based on I Corinthians, "God's Workshop, the Church." The Scripture portion upon which the above question is based is I Corinthians 9:23-10:32. Workshops Set At Free Methodist Workshops in personal evan gelism are being held at the Free Methodist church. - The first was last evening and the second tonight at 7 o'clock. Methods outlined in the book "Here's How to Win Souls" by Gene Edwards are being fol lowed. In the morning worship serv ice the pastor, the Rev. Roland Stewart, will give a message on the subject "The Meaning of Inspiration". During the family hour the adults will meet for the service training course taught by Grace Andrews. Bruce Flora, Port land, executive secretary of the Pacific Northwest Conference of the Church of the Brethren, will speak Sunday at the 11 a.m. worship service the Med ford Church of the Brethren, 345 N. Sunday, following the wor ship hour, the deacons and their wives will meet in the Fellow ship hall for a potluck dinner and a businers meeting. The program and theme will be, "Christmas In Other Lands." The Bert Oudhoff family, who came to the church from Holland several years ago, will be in charge. Christian Science Lesson Announced "God the Only Cause and Creator" is the subject of Sun day's Bible lesson to be read at First Church of Christ, Scien tist, 100 Windsor Ave., at 11 a.m. God's government of the uni verse and all mankind will be emphasized in many of the readings, including Psalm 22:28.
