Phoenix, North Catholic Vie for A-2 Grid Toga Title Tilt Saturday At Ashland ASHLAND Championship ."Dotball. That will be the bill-of-fare -,ere Saturday. And, Oregon's Class A-2 diadem will be the prize. Two' terrific aggregations will battle for the honor as the curtain comes down with a nourish on the state's' prep Tidiron season. The Phoenix High School Pl ates and the Royals of North ;atholic will be the foes. Kick off time is planned for 1:30 p.m. on Southern' Oregon College's Tuller Field. "One of the finest high school ames in the state this year" is the forecast of a qualified observer who well-knows the Phoenix personnel and who has seen the Royals in action sev eral times. "Fans," he said, "will see two fine football clubs that will give them 48 minutes of Class A ball." Struggle of Unbeaten! This will be a struggle of mbeatens. The Pirates and the Portlanders each have subdued 11 adversaries' since their cam paigns opened in September. They, also, are untied. Phoenix, the Rogue League powerhouse, scored upon only once this fall, bears the role of favorite. But, it is anticipated that the Buccaneers, ranked No. 1 in all the polls, will engage the toughest foe they've met this fall, and will have to be at their best if they are to claim the mantle for their class. , The Royals rumbled through the Cowapa circuit. They have prevailed over Northern Oregon and coastal opposition and were ' No. 2 and No. 3 in the final ratings. - Fine Quarterbacks Both clubs are explosive. If they are given firm footing on the collegiate sod, a spectacu lar contest could result. They are generalcd by fine quarter backs in Ron Williams for the Buccaneers and Ed Gorman for Ihe Royals. Gorman, a 6-3, 190-pounder, .directs North Catholic slot T . offensive operation. He's de scribed as being "as fine a quarterback as you'll find in the state." He likes to run and can throw, too. Gorman docs a fine job on the option and can block well. He's thrown at least one touchdown pass that travel- . ed in the air for 55 yards. Mike Hryciw is a fine runner with good balance, who can also block with proficiency. The Phoenix Pirate "formation," above, exemplifies this all out effort. "Receiv ers" shown are, from left, Rick Dorman, halfback; Ramon Mata, center, Ed Mitchell, guard; Eugene Hill, end, and Ken Joe Kniser at fullback are adept at their positions. Keever and End Mike Jarrell are targets for Gorman passes. Another re ceiver can be End John Amato. Big Engineering Job For Phoenix Williams has blazed his ability to pack and pass. He has a big job in en gineering Coach Jack Wood ward's multiple offense which utilizes both single wing and T formations. Much said about Gorman can be repeated about Williams. The 175-poundcr is ef fective as a blocker and he's a strong defensive player for the club which carries the standard of Southern, Central and Eastern Oregon. Left Half Jim Consbruck is the main breakaway threat of the Pirates. And Fullback Jon Granby, Right Half Dennis Grennan and all-round back are proven performers in carrying ( ENTUCKV STMIGH1 8 0 U R ION W 0 iSTHUIt COMPANY. 1 0 U I HlSiy 86 PROOF Hill TIUEI lllll, KENTUCKY enc ion s the true old-style Kentucky Bourbon always smoother because it's slow-distilled the ball or in providing the blocking for the runner. Granby matches Gorman's 190 pounds. Reserve Quarterback Mike Hawkins, a speedster, is an other running and passing threat and a target for throws by Williams. Others who may be on the catching end of aerials are Granby, Consbruck, Sauer, Gary Smith and Hili.. Line Cogs Line cogs in making the Pi rates a powerful machine in clude Greg Esp, Ron Patterson, Gary McGarity, Dave Westfall, Ken Tycksen, Paul Diederich, Smith and Hill. McGarity is the heftiest at 190 pounds. Tackles Dennis Schafer at 210 to 215 pounds and Bill Klein at 205 team to help give North Catholic a weight average edge in the line. Center Ron Molony of Coach Joseph Gillis's Royals has drawn attention in particu lar because of his blocking on a club which has good speed. Other line regulars for the Port landers are Guards Tim Akin and Ed 'Kaiel. Phoenix's high scoring total and its tremendous defensive record are factors placing it in the favored role. However there is no measure to compare the caliber of competition that the two finalists have met. The Pirates have tabulated 384 points this fall. North Catho lic has compiled an impressive total of 333. Blanking 10 oppon ents, Phoenix has permitted just six points by a rival. The Royals have given up just 39 markers also indicative of tough defense. No team has scored more than one touchdown against the Royals. North has zeroed five foes. Close Margins Of the Phoenix rivals, only two, St. Mary's and Sena, have limited the Pirates to less than four touchdowns. Phoenix scored three each in those games. While North has run up at least five touchdowns in seven of its games, it has had several closer margins than the Pirates 27-7 against Seaside, 13-7 against Hood River, 13-0 against Rainier and 7-6 against Sius law and could be tougher for them. The Royals reportedly dom inated the Siuslaw tussle more than indicated by the score. Both of the clubs, however, were termed "champions" for the way they stayed in the "miser able mud" last week at Flor ence. Shocked Grid Followers Phoenix gained Saturday's fin ale by sweeping through a seven game Rogue season, then trim ming Douglas 38-0 and Vale 26- 0 in quarter and semifinals. The ale success was a shocker to some grid followers in the state. Vale just hasn't been handled that way on its home field in many seasons. North Catholic defeated nine aggregations in the Cowapa loop, then downed Willamina 334) and Siuslaw in the play offs. Phoenix is in the A-2 final for the second time in three years. It was co-champ with Myrtle Point in 1961. It's all Eencra! admission to the titular contest with the price $1.50 per adult. The cost will be 50 cents for each student. There has been no advance sale of tickets. A weather bureau report this morning indicated "pretty fair chance of good weather" for to morrow's contest. Officials for the game report edly will be Virgil Swanson, Bill Esselstyn and Barney Kigg.1, all of Mcdford. ( Hawkins, quarterback. In the center stack, top to bottom, are Lex Hamilton, tailback; Dick Unruh, linebacker, and .Charlie Roberts, tackle. Coach Jack Woodward of the Pirates declared that, although none of the players shown is a starter, all have put in a lot of playing time and have estab lished a reputation for dependability. Phoenix depth has con tributed much to its success. Oregon Class A-2 Championship Football , PHOENIX HIGH vs. NO. CATHOLIC HIGH Probable Offensive Lineups Fuller Field Saturday, 1 :30 P.M. Match maker Elton Owen jumped uto the ring but was unable to i handle the situation. Wrestlers Nick Kozak and Irish Paddy Barrett, who had been opponents in a match a short time earlier, also rushed in to help and Gorky and Duffy were finally subdued. Police had to escort them from the ring through an angry crowd, which numbered about 1,500. Sat on Him Jacobs had used a rolling leg lock to take the first fall on Gorky while Calhoun, all 601 pounds of him, sal on ram bunctious Duffy in one corner of the ring.
