Our new books were -. passed out and we discussed the sweaters we will make. New officers elected are Krlsti Bittle, president; Sandy Larson, secretary-treasurer; Marta Heff ; ner, reporter. We will have our meetings on Mondays. Marta Heffner, Reporter Jacksonville Goody Cookers Cynthia Charley presided for the first meeting of the Jackson ville Goody Cookers 4-H Club re- cently. Barbara and Joe Brooks, vice president and recreation leader, led the flag salute. The achievement dinner which was held recently was discussed and we talked about plans for , the coming year. Joe Brooks led a game and re freshments were served. An ex ecutive meeting was held after . the regular meeting. Marta Heffner, Reporter ; Mixers and Fixers The Nov. 13 meeting of the . Mixers and Fixers 4-H Club was called to order by Kathy Web ster, president, In the home of Mrs. Webster, Trail. Kathy Webster gave dem onstration on giving a demon stration. Audrey Friese and Ri ley Ferguson will give a dem onstration at the next meeting, Nov. 27. Audrey Friese, Reporter Angry Legislator Scissors Paycheck SALEM (UPI) - One legis lator, angered because his col leagues refused to allow a bill . to cut lawmakers' salaries to be voted upon in the House, took the matter in his own hands Wednesday. Rep. Edward Elder, R-Eu-cene, lumped to his feet during debate on the pay cut Issue and said "I guess if I want my pay cut, I'll have to do it myself' He then took a pair of scissors and cut bis expense check apart, and threw the pieces on the floor. The self-styled economy move may not prove much of a sav ing, However. The state treasurer's office said the check would be carried on the state's books for seven years, and at the end of that time if it was not presented for payment, the secretary of state would advertise that the check was to be cancelled. Officials were unable to esti mate what It would cost to write off the check. Alsing Elected to Engineers Post Allen A. Alsing, director of Public Works and city engineer in the City of Ashland, was elected president of the Rogue Valley Section, Professional Engineers of Oregon. Alsing, who is now vice presi dent of the organization, will begin his term of office as presi dent Dec. 1. He will serve for one year. Others elected to serve dur ing 1964 were Lawrence S. Smith, administrative as sistant to division manager, Pa cific Power and Light Com pany, Medford, secretary treas urer; and Willis M. Ausland, civil engineer, Ausland Con struction company, Grants Pass, trustee for two years. The Rogue Valley section of the Professional Engineers in cludes Jackson, Josephine and part of Douglas Counties. The Professional Engineers of Oregon, with which the local section is affiliated, is a mem ber of the state society of the National Society of Professional Engineers. There are five sec tions in the state. Jackson Elected to Commonwealth Board Glenn L. Jackson of Medford has been elected to the board of directors of Com monwealth, Inc., Portland-based mortgage banking firm, according to H. M. Hawkins, president. The Episcopal Society for Cul tural and Racial Unity (ESCRU) closed its three-day meeting nere last week with a resolu tion charging that "segregation and discrimination are being fostered knowingly or unknow ingly" by the AAA's acceptance of motels and hotels which prac tice segregation. Acts Independently ESCRU is an independent so ciety of about 3,000 lay and clergy with chapters throughout the country. It acts independent-J ly of the Protestant Episcopal Church of the United States. A spokesman for the AAA said that the association had no con trol over the patronage policies of its approved motels and ho tels. . Russell E. Several Negro delegates at the ESCRU meeting said that the AAA s approved accomodations listed many segregated lodgings. Others complained that they were unable to travel in parts of the South due to a lack of Negro accomodations. . Withdraw Support ESCRU, called on its church members to "convey their sen timents to the AAA and its local affiliates and to withdraw their support from that organization until such practices are discon tinued. One resolution called for more "direct action protests" against any Episcopal Church, 'school or church-related schools "known to operate under discriminatory policies or practices." While an other urged church members to "disassociate themselves from any and all church-related in stitutions that practice racial discrimination either explicitly or covertly." An ESCRU spokesman said, however that the resolutions are not directly binding upon the Protestant Episcopal Church of the United States and are of fered merely a s suggested church policy. Joint Conventions About 500 clergy and laymen attended joint conventions held by ESCRU and the National JFK SIGNS BILL WASHINGTON (UPI)-Presi-dent Kennedy signed a bill Wednesday authorizing the striking of medals in commem oration of the 150th anniversary of Indiana's entry into the Union. Catholic Conference for Inter racial Justice, which opened last Thursday. Many delegates expressed dis satisfaction with the past efforts of the church in supporting the civil rights movement. ESCRU President Rev. Joseph Pelhan, said that Episcopalians "have been confronted with pressing questions about the depth of the racial-social prob lem in America and the present performance and capabilities of the church in dealing with these problems." . He added that the convention has helped clear the air of lin gering doubts on these matters and will indicate a positive di rection which the church can follow." . : In other resolutions, ESCRU condemned discrimination: in employment, church and church-related- activities, banking - and housing.
