Angry Legislator
Scissors Paycheck
SALEM (UPI) - One legis
lator, angered because his col
leagues refused to allow a bill
. to cut lawmakers' salaries to
be voted upon in the House,
took the matter in his own
hands Wednesday.
Rep. Edward Elder, R-Eu-cene,
lumped to his feet during
debate on the pay cut Issue and
said "I guess if I want my pay
cut, I'll have to do it myself'
He then took a pair of scissors
and cut bis expense check apart,
and threw the pieces on the
floor.
The self-styled economy move
may not prove much of a sav
ing, However.
The state treasurer's office
said the check would be carried
on the state's books for seven
years, and at the end of that
time if it was not presented for
payment, the secretary of state
would advertise that the check
was to be cancelled.
Officials were unable to esti
mate what It would cost to write
off the check.
Alsing Elected to
Engineers Post
Allen A. Alsing, director of
Public Works and city engineer
in the City of Ashland, was
elected president of the Rogue
Valley Section, Professional
Engineers of Oregon.
Alsing, who is now vice presi
dent of the organization, will
begin his term of office as presi
dent Dec. 1. He will serve for
one year.

The Episcopal Society for Cul
tural and Racial Unity (ESCRU)
closed its three-day meeting
nere last week with a resolu
tion charging that "segregation
and discrimination are being
fostered knowingly or unknow
ingly" by the AAA's acceptance
of motels and hotels which prac
tice segregation.

ESCRU is an independent so
ciety of about 3,000 lay and
clergy with chapters throughout
the country. It acts independent-J
ly of the Protestant Episcopal
Church of the United States.
A spokesman for the AAA said
that the association had no con
trol over the patronage policies
of its approved motels and ho
tels. .

ESCRU, called on its church
members to "convey their sen
timents to the AAA and its local
affiliates and to withdraw their
support from that organization
until such practices are discon
tinued. The resolution was one of ten

He added that the convention
has helped clear the air of lin
gering doubts on these matters
and will indicate a positive di
rection which the church can
follow." . :
In other resolutions, ESCRU
condemned discrimination: in
employment, church and church-related-
activities, banking - and
housing.
