And, Allen Young toed the extra point kick which made the difference in the scoring, Roseburg promenaded 63 vards to touchdown oil tne see ond half kickoff with Beamer crashine the last scant yard Medford's offense thundered in the early final quarter. The Tor nadoes whirled 70 yards and Halfback Jim Cox popped into the end zone from the two. No Second Try Bill Collins' extra point boot was blocked before he had hardlv eot his foot into the ball. What appeared an obvious offside on Roseburg on the con version kick was not called against the Indians. Collins did not get another try. "That was the ball game," said Medford Coach Fred Spigelberg. This was only Roseburg's sec ond grid verdict in history over Medford in some 23 combats. It evened the Indians for a 7-14 loss to the Hurricane in the 1962 quarterfinals. Roseburg, bidding for its second mantle in two years, next will be host to Grant of Portland in the A-l titular round of four. Grant Beat West Linn yester day 184. The Tornadoes came close to a touchdown that could have meant triumph for them on an electrifying passing play. With four seconds until halftime on the clock, Quarterback Mike Barnes, who played it poised and calm through the action, hurled a long and mighty bomb down field to Halfback Greg Gandce. Leep stopped the Tor nado receiver on the six-yard line. This gain went for 54 yards. There was no chance for another play. Had Gandee had a couple of extra steps on Indians he'd scored. Official net aggregate statis tics, kept in case the game had ended in a tie, gave 314 to 248 yard margin to the Black Tor nado. The Mail Tribune's unoffi cial tabulation had Medford ahead 249 to 214 on strictly r ig and passing yardage. Medford threatened in the early minutes Friday, reaching the Indian 18-yard line. Rose burg followed with its only severe first half threat, was stopped by fumbling after going to the Tornado 22 then kept Medford with its back to the goal until the waning moments of the second period on the punting of Halfback Young. Four exchanges of the ball came between the Roseburg TD and the Medford scoring drive. Cox reached the Indian end zone with 8:38 on the clock. Medford did not get the ball back from the Chieftains until only 1:44 was left to play. A couple of holding penalties against Roseburg, a 13-yard run by Barnes and a five-yard pass play Barnes to Walt Verstratc kept the Hurricane hopes alive. But safety Jerry Remick inter cepted a Barnes pass on the Roseburg six-yard line with two seconds left to play and the came was in Roseburg hands. The Indians on their TD and fourth period pushes came up with big plays after Medford would seem to have them stop. ped. (UPI) - Washington State took advan tage of three Stanford fumbles to roll up an 18-0 halftime lead, then hung on for a 32-15 victory Saturday the seventh consecu tive time the Cougars have whipped the Indians. With second string quarter back Dale Ford befuddling the Indians with his pass-run op tions and halfback Clarence Wil liams bowling over Stanford de fensemen for nearly an eight yard per carry average, it was no contest from the start. Stanford fumbled and lost the ball three times in the first eight minutes of play and the Cougars turned these into a 24-yard field goal, and a touchdown for a 10-0 first quarter lead. They made it 12-0 early in the second period when Stanford halfback Jack Lodato intercept ed a Washington State pass in his own end zone that went for a safety for the Cougars. Rams Leave Arnett Home DETROIT, Mich. (UPI) -Jon Arnett, still unrecovered from a knee injury, stayed in Los Angeles as the Rams flew here for a re-match with the Detroit Lions today. Detroit downed the Rams 23-2 in Los Angeles, National Foot ball League opener, but this is a different Ram team now. For instance, the Chicago Bears clobbered the Rams 52-14 earlier in the season, then barely de feated the Rams 64) last week on a pair of field goals. Roman Gabriel suffered a broken nose in the Bear1 game, but is expected to be able to pilot the Rams here. The victory extended Pcral ta's unbeaten string to 44 bouts. Promoter Harry . Markson wants the return 10-rounder on Dec. 13, because Friday night's Garden fight was so exciting and controversial. Whether Markson can guarantee the win ner a title bout with champion Willie Pastrano he did not say. Dark-haired Peralta, 28, and favored at 11-5, won an unpopu lar verdict over blondish Thorn ton, 24, because he had manag ed to build up what seemed a lead from the third round through the seventh. However, Thornton's thrilling start in the first round and his stronger finish caused many of the 2,500 fans in the Garden to boo the decision for almost five minutes. Peralta's nearly closed left eye, which trickled blood from a cut on the lid, probably stimulated some of the objec tions. FORMER OLYMPIAN DIES PASADENA, Calif. (UPI) -Otto Anderson, a hurdler on the United States Olympic team in 1924, died of a heart attack j Friday. He was 63. Fumble Recovered A Medford recovery of a Rose burg fumble on the Indian 39 presented Medford with a first quarter opportunity. Barnes rolled for nine yards. Roseburg drove to the Med ford 22 with the help of a 28 yard Beamer to Heeter pass. But Burgess fumbled and Lynn Flanders recovered for Medford. In the second stanza Rosebure was forced to punt after getting to the Medford 36. Young lofted a short kick which bounded for ward and Tackle Tom Reese downed it on the Medford one. After two Medford runnine plays Halfback Tim Murrav quick kicked 30 yards to the Koseburg 35. The Indians netted two yards lost in three plays. One was a "Lone Ranger" spe cial .with End Heeter taking a pitcn and passing to Halfback Ron Leep incomplete. Young punt and Linebacker Dick Gwaltney downed the ball on me two. 7-2 Record Medford fought out to the 22 before Murray booted 31 yards to the Roseburg 47. The Indians worked to the Medford 39 and a Young kick gave Medford pos session on its 11. Enyart gained three yards then ripped for 16 to the 30 on a draw. Then came the long pass' which almost scored for Medford. The Tornado wrapped up its season with a 7-2 record, losing only to Boise, Idaho and Rose burg. Indian gndders are now 9-1 for the fall. ' Medford went Into Friday's skirmish rated No. 1 in polls while the Chiefs were ranked as No. 2. Roseburg's win could not be classed as an upset. Al though the Tornado held the higher rating some forecasters favored Roseburg in the game. Field Fairly Good Considering the heavy Novem ber rains, the field was in fair ly good condition for the con test. The center of the gridiron, bare of turf, had been rolled and covered early in the week. The Indians ran their plays well mixed and Beamer was ef fective with the deceptive belly series. He had 75 yards, him self, on 20 carries. Burgess, who has averaged 10 yards per pack was held by the Tornadoes to 33 yards on 13 chances. For Medford Enyart toted 14 times for 62 yards. Roseburg headed In rushing yards 155 to 111 and Medford in passing 138 to 59. Those Medford fans who feel protest is possible after game films are viewed can just forget it. They can howl. But, even if protest should be justified, it won't do any good. A crowd of 13,974, held down because of an overnight snow fall, saw the contest in 35 de gree w.ather in muddy Ute Sta dium. 1 Morton, the Golden Bear with the golden arm, passed for one touchdown and completed six of nine for 09 yards, while Relies and Blanchfield gave the Bears the impetus they needed on the ground. The merry madcaps of the hardwood are a bunch of fun loving youngsters who play to their audiences for laughs from the instant they come on the floor until they leave spinning Three NY Giants Out NEW YORK (UPI)-The New York Giants counted three play ers "definitely" out for today's meeting with San Francisco while the Forty Nlners are per haps in the healthiest condition of an injury-plagued season. The Giant a, seeking their sixth straight win, are a 17 point favorite over the Forty Niners, who have had only five players 100 per cent healthy all season. Missing from the Giants' line up will be No. 1 fullback Alex Webster, safety Allan Webb and left linebacker Bill Winter. However, three injured New Yorkers came off the Injury list Rosey Brown, offensive left tackle; left comer back Erich Barnes and tight end Joe Walson. All six have had leg miseries. San Francisco (2-7) will be making its first visit to Yankee Stadium In six years before the usual sellout crowd of 62,000- plus, , Rooks Whip Ducklings CORVALLIS (UPI) -Quarterback Bob Grim ran 55 yards and passed 22 yards to Greg Hartman for touchdowns to lead the Oregon State Rooks to a 27- 0 football win over the Oregon Ducklings Friday. Quarterback Paul Brothers passed 24 yards to Hartman and fullback Mike Shinn plunged 1 yard for Oregon State's other scores. The Rooks rolled up a 14-6 edge in first downs and a 346 45 margin in total yardage. The decision completed the teams' seasons with 3-1 records. Oregon edged Oregon State 8-6 s in an earlier game. Southern To Down LOS ANGELES (UPI) - Southern California's two great running backs, Mike Garrett and Willie Brown, each scored a touchdown Friday night as the Trojans came from behind for a 28-22 football victory over Oregon State. The Beavers' passing combin ation of quarterback Gordon Queen and end Vern Burke clicked for two touchdowns in the second period and another in the fourth period,. but other wise Oregon State's passing at tack was bottled up. A sparse crowd of 30,846 at the Coliseum witnessed a tre mendous passing effort by Queen when he and his favorite target avoided the Trojans' de fensive maneuvers. The three touchdown passes thrown by Queen brought his total to 16 in nine games, one better than the mark set by teammate Terry Baker last season. Garrett Gains 159 Yards Garrett rushed for 159 yards for the Trojans while Brown put the game out of Oregon State's reach In the third period with a 54-yard run down the sidelines for a touchdown. With the Trojans leading 22-14, both teams scored in the final period when Queen threw his third touchdown pass to Burke for 34 yards. His other scoring throws were for 12 and 22 yards. Hal Bedsole, back on the first USC team after disciplinary ac tion, hauled in a seven-yard pass on Tuesday basketballs on their fingertips. The Clowns cavort through all sorts of comic routines, plus impromptu stuff on their own. The ad lib gag is their stock in trade and they're not beyond getting the fans into the act. Big Laugh ' Spectators get a big laugh when one of the Clowns takes over the referee's job and calls fouls on his teammates for such things as "traveling without a suitcase" or "funnv stuff." Then the referee is u a u a 11 y called forth to take the foul shot and when he misses, the fun begins ine merriment starts the mo ment the Clowns start their fast warmup routine which features trick plays and fancy ball han dling. Ernie Jones scored from the one. . : , Although he threw two inter ceptions, Fertig had slightly the better mark in passing statistics Bruins Gain Upset Over Washington LOS ANGELES (UPD-Quar-terbacks Larry Zeno and Steve Sindell led an aroused UCI.A football team to a 14-0 upset vic tory over wasnmgton Saturday that k e p t the Huskies from clinching the western Rose Bowl bid. Halfback Bryon Nelson proved the key man in the victory by catching 10 passes,, including both touchdown throws from Sindell and Zeno. ' The Huskies went 'into the game undofeated in the Big Six and needing only a win yester day to Insure them of the Rose Bowl selection. But UCLA, which had won only one previous game this sea son, was unimpressed by Wash ington's record and five-game winning streak. The Bruins on a great team effort outplayed Washington throughout the con test and held the Huskies to minor yardage gains on the ground. The first UCLA score came in the opening seconds of the second period when Sindell passed eight yards to Nelson in the end zone to culminate an 88-yard drive.
