Scott, head of the Amer ican Cancer Society, Thursday night called for support of re search that would make cigar ette smoking medically safe. "People are going to smoke," Dr. Scott said, "they get too much pleasure out of it to stop. The thing we have to do is make it safe for them." - - The doctor said he believes the society should finance re search to make smoking more healthy. He said some cigarette filters had cut nicotine and tar consumption in half, and a re search project showed that selective tobacco blending can reduce the harmful elements by one-third. Wednesday afternoon. Fifty minutes later, it was $360 ahead of the house and called it a day. Emmett Hutchins, 29-year-old research programming director at General Precision Co. in Los Angeles, handled the computer chores at,d Sam Baden, unruf fled by the 3-foot-high mechan ical brain, dealt for the house. The computer decided whe ther or not to draw a card or "hit" as it is termed in gam bling circles and how much to .bet (from $2 to $42) on the basis of information fed to it on each play. Blackjack, or "21" as it is known here, is a card game in which the dealer and player at tempt to get a hand totally as close as possible to 21 without going over that number. Hutchins would indicate to the machine on each play what his two cards were and what card the dealer was showing in his hand. If nothing happened, this meant not to draw a card. But if LGP-21 flashed a green light, it was time to take another card. Commented dealer Radan: "The machine had a run of luck." SERLING UPI Aviation Editor WASHINGTON (UPI) - The government and aviation indus try are moving to counter a mysterious menace to giant jets unpredictable turbulence that has wrecked one airliner and sent at least two others almost out of control. It is not the usual turbulence associated with storms, but freakish vertical downdrafts and updrafts which seem to oc cur without warning at the high altitudes used by jets. An Eastern DCS apparently was caught in such a turbulent tug of war over lexas Saturday night. It finally landed safely, but only after six passengers were injured and one engine was ripped off as the pilot pulled out of the dive. The f ederal Aviation Agency (FAA), Civil Aeronautics Board (CAB), airlines operating jets and aircraft manufacturers are aware of the rare but potential ly dangerous problem. They also are agreed it is in the process of being licked. The cure is two-fold airline pilots are being told not to slow down too much when they en counter turbulence, and they have been advised to use a dif ferent technique to overcome the effects of vertical tur bulence. Pilots entering a turbulent area normally will slow down to a certain speed. In the case of these unexpected downdrafts and updrafts, however, the per mitted penetration speed may be too low. The jets are first caught in a violent updraft re ducing airspeed even further and putting the planes -in dan ger of stalling. . A jet, with its swept-back wings, has a tendency to stall at higher speeds than conven tional planes. If a stall is feared during the updraft, the natural tendency of a pilot is to push the nose down and gain air speed. At this moment, the up draft changes to a downdraft and the airspeed becomes so great as to create control problems. Council Fathers Clear Way For Discussion on Unity VATICAN CITY (UPI)-Ecu- menical Council fathers today closed off debate on church ad ministration and cleared the floor for their long awaited dis cussion on how to achieve Chris tian unity. Actual debate on ecumenism, the title of the document on unity before the council, will begin Monday after a weekend recess. It will be the first time in the history of the Roman Cath olic Church that the theme of working toward a single Chris tendom will be considered as a part of church teaching. Debate on the subject of re organizing diocesan boundaries was shut off by the moderators after the list of speakers was exhausted. The chapter on the need for reorganization of boun daries was part of a document on bishops and the government of dioceses which now will be rewritten by a council com mission. In the document on ecumen ism, the Roman Catholic Church considers ways to bring about the reunion of the Christian world. The document has five chap ters. It includes a resolution in favor of religious liberty as well as a statement saying Jews should not be made scapegoats for the crucifixion of Christ. Christian unity is the long range aim of the Ecumenical Council as envisioned by the late Pope John XXIII, and has the nose level at such times. Vertical turbulence first be came a source of suspicion and concern last February when a Northwest Airlines Boeing 720 disintegrated while climbing through a severe thunderstorm over the Florida Everglades. The CAB has not yet issued a report on the accident in which 43 persons died, but investiga tors are known to believe that the plane encountered first a powerful updraft and then a sudden downdraft. The theory is that the pilot, trying to avoid a stall during the updraft, put the nose down just as the downdraft struck. In the high-speed dive that fol lowed, he may have tried to pull out too soon and tore off the plane's elevators, sending it completely out of control. far-reaching implications in a world where Christians are out numbered two-to-one. The first chapter of the ecu menism document says that the various churches to which Prot estants and Eastern Orthodox belong have an important role in salvation. Chapter two outlines practical paths as guidelines in this work ! for unity, which it says begins: from an inner renewal. This in-'. ner renewal of the Catholic Church is the immediate aim of the Ecumenical Council. I The fourth chapter is the one ! on Jews. The fifth is the resolu tion, strongly backed by Ihe American episcopate, urging re ligious tolerance.
