CHAMPS OF CONFERENCE - Medford High's Southern Oregon Conference football championship squad is pictured above. The Black Tornado, which is also defending state champ in Class A-l, will carry its title defense another step this Friday night when it goes to Roseburg. This will be an Oregon quarterfinal playoff game. College Passing Mileage Reaches All-Time High NEW YORK (UPI) - Gus Dorais and Knute Rockne of Notre Dame could hardly have realized what they were starting when they introduced the first attack of any consequence to surprise Army in 1913. Now, 50 years later, the na tion's college footballers are us ing the air for more than 40 per cent of their travel. ( The figure has been soaring steadily, reaching a record 39.0 per cent last year, but not until Saturday did it go over the 40 per cent mark. Not only has 40.1 per cent of the 1963 season's mileage to date been pass-produced, but 24 major teams have gained more in the air than on the ground and 33 players have thrown for more yardage than anyone has carried the ball from scrimmage. Emphasizing the point is the fact that seven of the top 10 major teams in total offense are also in the top 10 in passing in NCAA Service Bureau statistics released today. This oassing fancy has also influenced the scoreboard, since the only two teams now averaging over 30 points a game Utah State and Navy are also among the air powers. Texas Exception The most notable exception to the rule is Texas, which came through its battle with air minded Baylor as the majors' only all-winning team after Au burn and Princeton were both dropped from the unbeaten ranks over the weekend. And Princeton has rolled to its 6-1 record with an almost total dis dain for the pass. The Tigers have thrown the ball only 54 times, but made them count for five touchdowns. On top in- total offense and scoring is Utah State, sixth in the passing ranks. Wichita, third in passing, is second in total offense. Navy is fifth in pass mg, seventh in total offense, second in scoring and is the na tion's pass-accuracy leader in a runaway. The Middies have een successiui on .669 of neir pass attempts and the only oth er major witn a better than per cent completion record Washington, .602. Tulsa took advantage of Bay- iurs siruggie wun Texas to sit in the Bears' chair as this week s team passing leader. Ne braska is fourth in total offense combining its rushing lead with only 722 passing yards. Mississippi, one of two un beaten but tied, majors, is ninth in total offense, seventh in pass ing ana nrst in the nation in touchdown passes with 15. Bills Make Genuine Run BUFFALO, N.Y. (UPI)-De- spite a chain of demoralizing injuries ana munea opportuni ties, the Buffalo Bills are mak ing men- nrsi genuine run m four years at the American Football League title. Lou Saban, the 42-year-old coach of the Bills, said the Eastern Division chase "will go ngni aown 10 tne wire " follow ing Buffalo's 27-17 victory over Denver Saturday night. This was Buffalo's third con secutive triumph and fifth iri six games and it lifted the Bills (5-4-1) into second place, only half a game behind Houston (6-4). This is Buffalo's highest level in four years. "The boys have never quit," baban said. We have some sound men,- especially Capt. Billy Shaw, who doesn't panic when things get rough." Enyart packed the ball 111 times for 499 yards, according to unofficial statistics. Greg Gandee carried 41 times for 245 yards and his six-yard average was tops among the regulars. Barnes had 178 yards for 59 times, Jim Cox 116 for 34 and Greg Dippel 94 for 21. In passing Barnes hurled the ball 60 times and had 21 com pletions for 361 yards. Jack Mullen fired seven for eight in two games for 136 yards. Toews has caught eight passes for 123 yards and Cox four for 119. Gandee has five catches for 84. Tim Murray received six passes. In touchdowns Enyart has cracked for five and Barnes has run for four. Toews and Murray each have three. Medford has had 16 different ball packers this fall, four pass ers and nine .receivers. Sixteen players have contributed to the scoring. The Black Tornado continues football play this Friday by go ing against Roseburg in the Ore gon Class A-l quarterfinals. Al Mel Renfro most in Full Health PORTLAND (UPI) -Mel Ren- fro will be almost fully healthy and Tom Nowatzke is the "best fullback in the Big 10." Those comments were made Tuesday at the meeting of the Oregon Sportswriters and Sport- casters Association by advance men for Saturday's Oregon-Indiana football game here. Art Litchman, athletic public relations chief at Oregon, said Renfro would be "just about 100 per cent" for the game. Renfro suffered a cracked rib in the Washington game here Oct. 26. - f uture In Portland Tom Miller, publicity chief for Indiana, said Nowatzke, who blitzed Oregon State last week, was the best fullback in the Big 10 and possibly the country." The crowd in Saturday's game here is being watched as a possible indication of the fu ture of college football in Port land. There has been pressure to return all Oregon and Oregon State games to their campuses and a small crowd Saturday could help this movement along. Oregon, incidentally, has played Big 10 teams seven times and has lost all seven. Oregon Ranks 6th in Offense NEW YORK (UPI) - Oregon ranked sixth in total offense and ninth in passing offense in NCAA football team statistics released here Tuesday. The Ducks have averaged 355.0 yards per game in eight contests in total offense and have averaged 173.5 yards per game in passing offense. Oregon quarterback Bob Ber ry ranked ninth In total offense in individual statistics with 1,247 yards, in eight games. SECTION B PAGES 1 to Id Medford iLiTjtiBUNB SPORTS MEDFORD, OREGON, WEDNESDAY, NOVEMBER 13, 1963 Bump Elliott Selected U Pi's Mentor of Week By VITO STELLINO ANN ARBOR, Mich. (UPD- When Bump and Pete Elliott played together for Michigan in the Rose Bowl on Jan. 1, 1948, Bump never dreamed that one day he would throw a roadblock to his younger brother's path to the post-season classic. But that s exactly what hap pened last Saturday when Bump piloted Michigan to a stunning 14-8 triumph over the Illinois club coached by Pete to earn the United Press International coach of the week" honors. Illinois went into the game ranked as the nation's No. 2 team with an excellent chance of going to the Rose Bowl. But Michigan, a young team that is suddenly jelling, had dif ferent ideas. Michigan had a sorry 1-3-1 record after five games and seemed in jeopardy of sinking below last year's 2-7 mark and finishing in the Big Ten base ment for the second straight season. ' But the ' Wolverines upset Northwestern, 27-6 two weeks ago and then utilized a tough defense and capitalized on a fumbled pitchout recovery in the last seven minutes to nip Illinois and even their mark at 3-3-1 for the season and 2-2-1 in the Bia Ten. Now the odds are against the Illini. They would have to win their final two games against Wisconsin and frontrunner Mich igan State while Ohio State would have to lose to either Northwestern or Michigan for Pete to go to the Rose Bowl. Bump, 38, now has wh'pped brother Pete,- 37, in the only four games that they've coached against each other but Bump refuses to believe that he has a jinx or a hex over Pete. "I don't believe in those things and I'm sure that Pete doesn't either. It's been four separate occasions and it's just happened that way. 1 m certain that the kids on the field don't feel there's a jinx." he added, "the ball takes a lot of funny bounces." Now that the Illinois game is past, Bump, who is still real close to his brother and doesn't exactly relish the idea of bat- tling him every year, is rooting for the Illini again. "Sure, I'd like to see them win the rest of their games," he said. But he neatly sidesteps the point that he could still help Pete to go to Pasadena by knock ing off Ohio State in two weeks. "Right now, we re concerned about Iowa this week, that's the only game on our mind," he said. Top-Rated Grid Clubs Favored This Weekend NEW YORK (UPI)-There'U be no holding the nation's four top-ranked teams this weekend according to the college football oddsmakers. Texas, Navy, Mississippi, and Michigan State the power elite of the major college set all have been installed two touchdown or better favorites for Saturday's games, as has been ninth-ranked Nebraska. The rest of the nation's top 10 are expected to have their hands full 1 with tough oppo nents, especially Illinois (No. 8) which is a three-point underdog to Big Ten rival Wisconsin. Top ranked Texas, with only two teams standing between them and the Southwest Con ference title, a Cotton Bowl bid, and the national champion ship, risks its perfect record against Texas Christian (3-3-1). The Longhorns, the only major college outfit with a spotless slate, are 12V4 point choices. Roger Staubach's sensational passing has made Navy (No. 2) a solid 12-point favorite over a 20-20 Duke team, although the Blue Devils are presently in a three-way tie for the Atlantic Coast Conference title. Mississippi Rates Third ranked Mississippi, skipping merrily to another Southeastern Conference cham pionship, rates 15Vi points bet ter than erratic Tennessee; Dunch-drunk Notre Dame, bat tered and bruised by Navy and Pittsburgh in its last two games, is unlikely to get any sympathy from Michigan State (No. 4) which rates a i3V4-poini selection on the strength of its Big Ten leadership; and Ne braska is is points stronger than Oklahoma State. Pitt (Ms. 5), Oklahoma (No. 6), and Alabama (No. 7) all rate one-touchdown favorites over ranked opponents. The Panthers are 7-point picks over Army (No. 12) In the East's feature game; the Sooners are favored by 8V4 over Big Eight rival Missouri (No, 15) und 'Bama is given the same spread over 13th-ranked Geor gia Tech with versatile Billy Lothridge. Georgia, paced by passer Larry Rakestraw, is a six-point underdog, to loth-ranked Au burn's ground forces, led by Jimmy Sidle. In a pair of Friday night games, Southern California is a 1 2 1 i point favorite over Oregon State in a West Coast clash, and Xavier is an eight-point choice over Detroit. In other Saturday games: East: Harvard is favored by 5'ii over Brown; Princeton 8 over Yale; Columbia 11 over Pennsylvania; Boston College 12',4 over Virginia; Dartmouth 12V4 over Cornell; Syracuse 20 over Richmond; Penn State 26 over Holy Cross. South: West Virginia 1 over Virginia Tech; Tulane U4 over Vanderbilt; Mississippi State 2 over Louisiana State; North Carolina 2V4 over Miami (Fla.); Florida State 3 over North Car olina State; Clemson 9 over Maryland; South Carolina 17 over Wake Forest. Midwest: Ohio vs. Bowling Green, even money; Wichita vs Cincinnati, even; Michigan 2 over Iowa; Ohio State 5 over Northwestern; Purdue 6 over Minnesota; Miami (Ohio) 8V4 over Dayton, Southwest: Arkansas 4 over Southern Methodist; Arizona State 8 over Wyoming; Houston 7 over Tulsa; Rice 12 over Tex as A&M; Air Force 12 over New Mexico; Baylor 12 over Kentucky; Kansas 13Vi over Colorado.
