Distributed by Klnf Futures Sysdieat Penneys , ALWAYS FIRST QUALITY P Meeting Challenge Of Leadership Is Discussed at Event A 3 "We don't import greatness. but we have a nation in which greatness can flourish," Dr. R. C. Young, Birmingham, Mich., told members of the Rogue River Valley Knife and Fork Club Tuesday night. Speaking on "America Meets the Challenge of World Leader ship" Dr. Young, who came to this country from Scotland after World War I, encouraged the audience to remember the heri tage of America, which is "apt to be forgotten, but realized by immigrants." He reminded residents that American greatest strength lies in her successes as a nation, and not in magnifying our failures, He explained that the United States is built on the idea that an individual has a cer tain dignity which can be de veloped to its highest potential. The U.S.S.R. stresses collectiv ism without individual identity, which works toward the ab sorption of the individual. In the United States leaders take men of different interests and. abilities and coordinate them to achieve a concrete re sult. In Russia the leadership superimposes upon the people a plan which is the idea of the leaders. The speaker condemned those who are willing to give a quar ter to be rid of responsibility, reminding the audience that U.S. in some instances has failed to realize that money will do no good. Stresses No Involvement He stressed that the" U.S. shouldn't get so involved with Russia that the government forget what brought it to the present situation. He noted that the present generation is only two genera tions removed from those who immigrated here, commenting on the distrust that each Eu ropean country had of the other. In the U.S. former en emies became one, fighting side by side for a country. The problem in Eurooe and NATO today, according to Dr. Young, is that no one in Europe wants to see Germany strong again. He stated that when the U.S. sided with Germany follow ing the war, Stalin became sus picious. The only positive United Na tions in the world today is the U.S.A., Dr. Young said, ex plaining that this welding of different races, cultures and creeds was accomplished largely by the public schools here. - - Select Native Sons "This, is our strength, but we fail to recognize it," he com mented. "Our people can go into any part of the world in rPENNEY'S ALWAYS FIRST QUALITY the name of Americanism. We must select native sons for for eign service, not ugly Ameri cans." , . ' The U.S. has come nearer to having a classless society than any nation, Dr. Young explain ed. It is here than, work is not an end in itself, but a means to an end. "America brought dignity to the coveralls and the common laborer," Dr. Young continued, commenting that "life is not a hand-mexlown. in exrhanre for work there is a prize." "(jive our children a faith in their own country," the speaker said. "Wp ran npvor aHvanpf, the cause if we continually hold up bur failures," he added. Dr. Young was introduced by the Rev. John 0. Reynolds, vice president of the club. COFFEE jjtf CUP AT BAMBY'S ' AT THE BIC Y THURS, FRI., SAT. and SUN. deeptone colors! newest fashion look in sheets!
