4 B - Two Medford Men Participating in Corvallis Meeting CORVALLIS - Lyle Kinney and Peter H. Westigard, both of Medford, are participating in the program of the 78th annual meeting of the Oregon Horticul tural Society at Oregon State University this ween, accord' ing to William E. Vollmer Jr. Parkdale, president. Kinney, of Harry and Da vid's, is participating in panel discussion on harvesting and handling truit to maintain quality during Thursday's apple and pear section meeting. Westigard, entomologist at the OSU Southern Oregon Kx- , periment Station, discussed "Trends in bpider Mite Con- tror during a symposium on orchard disease and insect problems before the apple and pear section. Other topics for discussion during the apple and pear sec tion meetings include new trends in packaging and pro cessing and a progress report on mechanical h a r v e s tine. Weed control, the tree fruit survey and foliar analysis will be subjects for discussion Fri day during the joint apple and pear-stone fruits section meet ing. Opens Wednesday The meeting of the state's oldest agricultural organization opened Wednesday with the first fission of the apple and pear section. Sectional meetings for vegetables, stone fruits and small truils opened today s scs sion. Dr. John Carcw, chairman of the horticulture department at Michigan State university, spoke to the society s general session today. Ho also discussed mechanical harvesting of vege tables and stone fruits in other talks. Featured speaker at the' an nual strawberry luncheon hon oring tho slate's outstanding growers will be Malcolm B. Douglas, Santa Clara, manager of the California Strawberry Advisory Board. Dr. James E. Jensen, OSU president, will speak at the society's banquet. Nearly 60 speakers will cover about 30 different topics during the sessions. The meeting is open to anyone interested In Oregon's fruit and vegetable Industry. Registration will be at Withycombe Hall on the OSU campus.
