Bone China Now Is Made In U.S. A. By LeROY POPE ' . ' ' NEW YORK (UPI)-Mention bone china to most any woman and her eyes get that acquisi tive glitter. But up to now that has been of no help to the chinaware Industry in . the United States. The English have had the market for the translucent, lephyr weight table service sew ed up for a couple of centuries. When Walter Scott Lenox founded Lenox, Inc., of Trenton, N.J., 75 years ago, he tried to make bone china. Whether he failed at the dif ficult porcelain technology in volved or just couldn't get peo' pie to believe in an American bone ware in an era when im ported goods still had great so cial prestige is not remembered. But now, the company at last Is producing and selling the first successful American bone ware. It's called Oxford bone and it has been test-marketed in a number of cities for one year. Has Bone Ash Bone gets it name from the fact that the ash of burned ani mal bone is an important in gredient in the porcelain mix. It is very thin, very strong, very white. Women love to hold a bone plate up to the light and see their fingers through it much as with an x-ray film. Oxford bone was introduced last August in fancy stores and leading jewelers but without the Lenox name and without being marked "made in U.S.A." Lenox wanted to see how the women would take to it without knowing its origin. "Some retailers were not happy about this deadpan mer chandising approach, but they agreed to go along," a company spokesman said. The results have been more than gratifying. Oxford bone, which sells for from M60 to $400 for a service (or eight, ac rording to pattern, immediately hvan to sell about as well as British brands in many leading stores. As a result, Lenox now has increased the number of pat terns in this first successful American bone from eight to 11 and the factory now is marking it "made In U.S.A." In the sportive mood for fall is the just above the wrist shorlie glove, its palm of sleek capeskin, its back cotton cro chet in i striped effect. It's a distinctive finishing touch for the new shirtcuff sleeve of suits or a perfect accent for city-minded separates. Good Breakfast Defined If you're the mother of school age youngsters, certainly you check to see that they leave for school clean and well-dressed But there is one thing that's even more essential. Are they starting their day well nourished? Of course, you're busy in the morning, and it's easy to serve a make shift breakfast rather than a nutritionally sound one. But you, Dad and the children all pay a high price for taking the easy way out. A recent survey revealed 10 per cent ot the elementary school children went to school without any breakfast, and 75 per cent did not receive a good breakfast. This is the age group where poor breakfast habits start and grow progressively worse. Children pay in lower efficiency and lowered mental alertness. Good Breakfast . Just what ' should a "good" breakfast include? First, it should provide one - fourth to one-third of our daily nutrients. It should include a serving of fruit or juice, preferably citrus fruit; a protein food such as meat and-or eggs; cereal or toast; and milk. You can make breakfast more interesting and easier if you plan ahead. Use your imagina tion so it isn't always the same menu. For instance, consider t h e various meats you can serve. Rcba Staggs, meat expert, sug gests bacon, Canadian-style Da- con, a nam slice, anea noci. corned beef hash, sausage links or patties or rcady-to-eat sau sages lamb patties or cubed : steaks. Team the meat with various ! fruits. For added interest, serve toasted English muffins, French , toast, muffins or biscuits. , Breakfasts for children ought i to be appealing as well as nour-' ishing. Important,, loo, are the conditions under which the menl i is served. When breakfast is a , pleasant experience, il estnb-j lishes an eating pattern growing : children will profit by all their j lives. Beef 'Muffins' ! New Idea for Ground Meat i Need a simple new idea for a ground beef dish? Beef Muffins are the answer. The beef is mixed with crushed potato chips for body and California Burgun dy or other red dinner wine for flavor accent. I Pack the meat into muffin i tins, top with baron and bake ! until savory brown. Simple and delicious for the whole family j the alcohol disappears as the "muffins" bake. Catsup or chili sauce is a good topping for the ! meat. Complete the meal with i crusty bread, your favorite veg-' etable and glasses of the same red dinner wine used in the rec ip. i BEEF MUFFINS 1 One pond ground beef; one cup finely crushed potato chips; one-half cup Burgundy wine or other red dinner wine; one egg, slightly beaten; one-fourth cup finely chopped onion; one tea- spoon salt; one-fourth teaspoon ; pepper; one strip bacon, cut ' crosswise in eighths; catsup or chili sauce.
