' By HIAWATHA ESTES Here is an economical rrc- j langular plan that opens up to pleasant landscaping al both the front and rear of the house. Large corner windows in the family room offer a wide view toward the front of the lot while sliding glass doors provide a view to the rear of the lot and make, the livinc room appear to be almosl a part of the patio and vice versa. The attractive brick porch leading to the enti-y is complete ly roofed and sheltered from the elements. The brick veneer on the front bedroom wall con tinues as a brick wall and then forms a brick pilaster on the top of which has been located a handsome light fixture. No t'rnss-Ronm Travel From the entry, there is no cross-room travel necessary in getting around the house, thus guaranteeing privacy for each area. Such thoughtful details as this and others outlined herein, tend to make a small house seem large and very pleasant in which to live. When you desire a wide-open atmosphere around the activity center, it is well to only use cabinets to separate the family room and kitchen as we have done here. A long eating bar has been made an integral part of these cabinets. A door leads from the kitchen to the rear yard while another opens direct to the garage. Inis latter door offers prompt access to the laundry facilities located in an offset at the rear of the garage. It also saves many steps each year in carrying purchases from the car to the house and eliminates the necessity of walk ing through inclement weather from the garage to the house. Pleasant Living Room The pleasant living room is exceptionally spacious for a home of less than 1,200 square feet. It can be expanded to ac commodate entertaining on a large scale by merely opening I the sliding doors leading to the Grants Totaling SI 11,242 Received For Ocean Research pation. The two baths have been placed back-to-back to econo mize in the plumbing installa tion. The three-quarter bath opens directly to the master bedroom. A guest closet is next to the entry while a roomy four feet wide linen fs in the hall. CORVALL1S New grants to taling $111,242 have been receiv ed by the Oregon State Univer sity Department of Oceanogra phy for studies on radioactive intake of ocean organism, clas sification and life cycle of ocean bottom organisms, and parasit ic worms of deep water fish. Largest is a $:!7,130 one-year grant from the Atomic Energy commission. Dr. Andrew O. Carey Jr., will head the work on continued classification of or ganisms living near the ocean bottom. Included in the research will be radioananlysis of organ isms to determine any radio activity level within the organisms. Filter-feeding organsims such as mussels and clams can con centrate radioactive mctcrial in their bodies. OSU's ocean sci entists want to know if many other small sediment-feeding or ganisms have the same ability. Sources of Itariiourllvlly Oceanonraphers also want to find how far in the ocean off the Columbia river artificial ra dioisotopes are carried from the llanford reactor plant at Kich land, Wash. Another source of radioactive material filling into the ocean is from nuclear bomb tests. Investigations for the AEC will be carried out to a distance of 165 miles. Oregon's coastal wa ters are excellent for intensive that there is more marine ani mal life within the deeper parts of the ocean than had been thought to exist. Working from the university's occanographic vessel, Acona, scientists will ex plore ocean depths from over mile to almost two miles down. Another ocean research proj ect now under way with a $13,- 178 National Institutes of Health grant is directed by Dr. James McCaulcy. Basic research will be made on the parasitic worms of fish that live in deep water. Most of the data gathered be fore have been on fish within relatively shallow water less than one-quarter of a mile down. McCaulcy will concentrate on studying fish in depths down to two miles. The N III study will attempt to learn more about the para sites of fish. OSU's scientists want to know why these fish have parasitic worms, effects the parasites have on the fish, and the life cycle of the para sites. A fourth research project now under way by Dr. Herbert C. Curl Jr., is sponsored by the Atomic Energy commission with a $24,2!H) one-year grant. The AEC grant will allow re searchers to probe into the food cycle of certain marine organ isms to learn more about what Comlete wnrklnr drawings for thU plan ran be purchased al a cost of S7.90 for the rirst set and $3 for each additional set when ordered at the same Ume. ilus plan will be available at these prices until Feb. 6. Since most of thc deep water marine life is al most unknown off the Pacific Northwest coast, occanograph ers expect to add much new data to the basic information of the sea. Carey also will carry out an other study of marine life to de termine thc relationships of the ocean bottom organisms and their environment. This will he sponsored by the National Sci ence Foundation during the next three years with a $:ifi.tH4 grant.
