8 B Top Auctioneer Lists Qualities Needed for Job BRYAN, Tex. (UPI)-Popu- lar impressions notwithstand- ing, a good auctioneer has to be much more than a man with a fast tongue and a heavy gavel. So says Col. Walter Britten, who helps run one of the na tion s most unusual schools an i n s t i t u t e for auctioneers at Bryan, Tex. Britten is one of the coun try's top auctioneers and is co- owner of the National Auction institute. The institute holds its classes at Allen academy in Bryan. "The major prerequisite for our institute is an interest in being a good auctioneer," Brit ten said. "A good auctioneer is someone who is capable ol be ing a good salesman. He has a good personality, a good knowledge of the product he is selling and a keen sense of observation. The institute holds its classes for two weeks in midsummer. Apprentice auctioneers go to classes up to 10 nours a day. They come from all over the country this year's class of 35 represented several states and over the years, nearly ev ery state and some Canadian provinces have had students in the courses. Individualistic Bidders are as individualistic as the things they buy, Britten says. For this reason, the auc tioneer has to remember the certain gesture, the character istic wink or nod or wave of hand, of his bidders. Some bidders don't like oth ers to know they are bidding. Others yell right out. Some wave. Others grimace. "You have to be ready for anything," Britten says. Oddly enough, not all the students at the Auction insti tute come to be auctioneers. "Sometimes their parents send them to help them gain confidence in their speaking ability," Britten says. "Other times, clerks in sales estab lishments are sent by their bosses to give them more in sight into the business. Often, somebody comes to us to work on a bad speech impediment." ROTC Detachment Adopts Air Group EUGENE Air Force ROTC Detachment 690, at the Univer sity of Oregon, has announced that it will be "adopted" by the 408!h Fighter Group (Air De fense) at Kingslcy Field, Klam ath Falls. In making the announcement, Detachment Commander Lt. Co John W Kocher said the cere mony would take place at Howe Field on the UO campus at 1 p. m. Thursday, Oct. 24. The ceremony, to which the faculty, students, and townspeo ple are invited, will include a color guard, a precision drill marching unit, and a flyover of a formation of supersonic F-101 jet fighters. The F-101s from Kingslcy making the low-level pass are the most modern fighters in the nation's defense inventory. They streak to battle at speeds up to 1,200 mph, and can carry lethal loads of missiles and rockets. Col. Edwin J. Witzcnburgcr, Kingslcy Field base commander. will speak briefly at the cere mony, as will University Presi dent Arthur S. Flemming. Mnj. James Price, assistant professor of air science at the university, win emcee the ceremony. Prior to the field ceremony, a luncheon for visitors and other honored guests, will be hild in the Erb Memorial Union. AFROTC "arlnntinns" nf ml. lege and university detachments are becoming traditional and are encouraged by Air Force Headquarters so that cadets can get an idea of what base life is like. Adair Field had adopted the unit at Oregon State univer sity and the Portland Field unit has adopted the Portland univer sity AFROTC detachment.
