And, if you are a firm advocate and believer of the weekly rating polls, put that Medford High School Black Tor nado back on top. For the Big Whirlwind from southern Oregon, one week re turned from a disastrous jaunt into Idaho, clearly vindicated itself and stood forth once more as a powerhouse after Friday night. Mcdford's Black Horde smashed 32 to 13 the rugged, scrapping North Salem Vikings who had succeeded No. 1. them as In a game here that mixed long gains and breaks with some solid smacking play, the Tor nado bulldozed into the turf an early Viking charge, struck for a three-touchdown command in the second period, saw its margin fade when opportunities aroused North Salem to resurge then tucked victory away with a comeback pair of fourth canto scores. Runs Go Far Medford gained the end zone first on a Larry Vowell to Steve Toews pass for 17 yards after a Jim Cox punt runback for 57 yards had put the ball on the Viking 20-yard line. Then, next time Medford got the ball Oreg Gandce raced 68 yards to the goal. Next Terry Winetrout blocked a ount by North's Gib Gilmore and Bill Houston fell on the ball in the end zone. That made it 20 to 0 at halftime. Third quarter Medford fumb les were turned into touchdowns by the Viks in this replay of last years state finalists. Lenny Martin tabulated from two yards out and Del Schaeffer went 10 yards on the opening play of Chapter No. 4. Score was 20 to 13. Medford rallied back and struck like lightning when a Mike Barnes to Cox aerial became a 59 -yard touchdown play. To close out the TD-making Cox ran over from two yards out with l'-i minutes yet to go. Established Rich Knight booted two extra points for Medford and Gilmore one for the Capital city team. Triumph here and the out field goal by Don Corey from the 15 (set up by a fumble, nat urally); and a touchdown on a pass from Doug Post to Ray Palm for eight yards (set up by an interception). The last touchdown, also pre ceded by a Stanford fumble, came with Post going over from the one. Berry, in addition to scoring one touchdown, completed 12 out of 23 passes for 216 yards. Seven of his passes were caught by end Dick Imwalle for 99 yards. The Indian line held the mighty Renfro to a net of 34 yards gained in 12 carries. The Tornadoes outgained the Viks both in the air and on the ground for net scrimmage difference of 271 yards to 184. First Big Wind touchdown came after a couple of North Salem threats. North drove off the opening kickoff to the Tor nado 25 where, on fourth down, Mcdford's line formed stubborn- , ly and stopped the Vikings short of first down. On the first play of the second stanza Medford's big Bill En yart, fighting for yardnge lost the ball on the North 44-yard line. Gib Gilmore grabbed the pigskin and barged down to about the Medford 20. But, ref eree Al Lightner had blown his whistle as Enyart was being stopped. Possession stayed with Medford which two downs later was forced to punt. Long Cox Run North got out to its 45 but was thrown back to its .18 and Gilmore had to kick. Cox took the ball on the Medford 23, faked a handoff, turned the corner and headed down the right side line. He was brought down by Larry Wright on the North Sal em 20. Enyart made five and three yards to the 12 and Mike Mur ray was stopped for no gain. Enyart reached the 10 but Med ford was put back to the 17 for illegal procedure. Then, left handed Vowell hurled the ball to Toews for the initial counter. The Salems moved into Med ford territory. But Jeff Lankow, trying to pass, was hauled down for a 23-yard loss by Tom Wooton and the home club had to punt. That gave Medford the ball on its 32 yard line. Suddenly the Medfords gave Gandee a hole off right tackle. He boomed through and like a super-charg ed jeep raced to the NS goal. two plays alter the kickoft Greg Dippel intercepted a Vik ing pass and Medford got pos sesion on the North Salem 10.
