Sponsors Offer Apology Over Negro Rejection BERKELEY, Calif. (UPI) -The group sponsoring the na tional football queen contest has apologized to a University of California Negro student who was replaced as a contest es cort because of his race. The Berkeley Junior Cham ber of Commerce issued the apology after a hurriedly-called meeting and pledged "we will make every effort now and in the future to see that an inci dent of this sort docs not oc cur again." The incident came to light following the climax of the contest Saturday when queen contestants were presented during halflime ceremonies of the California-Iowa State foot ball game. A University of California honor society, The Californians, was asked by the Jaycees to select nine escorts for the con- i tcstants. Lynn Sims, 20, a Nc ; gro, was among the honor so ciety members selected for es cort duty. Two hours before the event, however, contest officials re ported some queen contestants from Southern universities ob jected to Sims' presence and asked that the Negro be replac ed by a white student. The Cali fornians complied with the re quest but later protested the action to university officials. The formal statement issued by the Jaycees expressed the organization's regret "for the embarrassment caused Mr. Sims, the University of Cali fornia and all others concerned."
