Dick James May Be NFL s Most Underrated Back WASHINGTON (UPI)-No. 47 on (he Washington Redskins may be the National Football League's most underrated back. No. 47 belongs to litle Dick James, the Tribe's veteran and versatile halfback whose 175 pounds of muscle and 75 pounds of heart. After the first two games of the season, James leads the club in rushing yardage and punt re turns and is second in kickoff returns. He scored the key touchdown in the Redskins' vic tory over Los Angeles Saturday night. But statistics do not tell Ihe story of James' value to Ihe team. He is a relatively small 5-9 player with tremendous pride and spirit. BARTLETT STREET Phone: 773-7404 McKay Still j Has Respect For Sooners LOS ANGELES (UPI) - John McKay, the reigning "Coach of the Year," is not buying any Ok lahoma tales of woe as he look ed ahead to his Southern Cali fornia Trojans meeting t h e Sooners in the television game of the week here Saturday. The Sooners will be given all the respect due a school that an nually fields one of the nation's top football teams, McKay indi cated Monday before the South ern California Football Writers meeting. McKay listened attentively as Oklahoma spokesman Har o 1 d Keith hinted the 1963 edition of the Sooners grid machine was "slow" and had been oulgained and outdowned by Clcmson in their seasonal opener. "I hope I never see a fast learn if Oklahoma is slow," Mc Kay said. "We know Oklahoma is a very fine football team. And it's the team that gets the most points that wins, not the team that runs up the statistics. McKay was not too satisfied wilh his club's 14-0 voctory over Colorado but his dissatisfaction was more over the playing con ditions. A downpour at Boulder, Colo., made it difficult for both teams and deprived the Trojans of the chance to demonstrate whether they were the equal of last year's national champion- snip team. The UCLA Bruins, badly burn ed by one team from the slate of Pennsylvania, hoped to do better against a second. Coach Bill Barnes said his club did few things well against Pitts- i burgh here last Friday. But he was hopeful that a few corrections might result in better performance against the strong Penn State club at Uni versity Park, Pa. "It seemed that somebody was making a mistake on every play against Pitt, Barnes said. We knew Pitt was an outstand ing team but we should have done better. Although he failed lo com plele a pass, Carl Jones will get the starting quarterback assign mcnt again, Barnes said. Michigan State To Open With Sophomore QB EAST LANSING, Mich. The decision, Daugherty said, wasn't an easy one to make. "Juday will start, and t w o weeks ago that would not have been so tough a choice to make. But Proebstle has made more progress in the last two weeks than at any other time in his career," Daugherty said. "But the job is Steve's, and if he keeps improving, as I'm sure he will, he'll stay in there. He's our No. 1 quarterback."
