Injury Picture
Not Too Bad
REDWOOD CITY. Calif.
(UPI) The San Francisco
Forty Niner injury situation was
not bad today considering t h e
number of players shaken up
in last Sunday's 20-14 loss to
Baltimore.
Both Bernie Casey and Dan
Colchico, who were helped off
the field, were only bruised and
are expected to be ready to go
Sunday at Minneapolis against
the Vikings.
Linebacker Mike Dowdle sus
tained a fractured thumb, ac
cording to x-rays, but also hop
ed to be ready Sunday.
Meanwhile, a look at team
statistics showed that the Forty
Niners lack of ball control has
cost them their two close de
feats. San Francisco had been out
first downed 54-24 in their first
two games and been outgaincd
813-440. They have had the ball
on only 84 plays as against 160
for the opposition. 1

Ashland's touchdown came in
the third quarter after a stale
mated initial half. Medford
threatened three times before
going over for its TD in the
dying moments of the game.
Bruce Stewart scored for the
sophomore Tornado on a three
yard crack after a pass for 31
yards from Sal Equivcl to Bob
Dames set up the TD chance.
A fake kick play failed to get
the bonus point for Medford.
Lewis Goes Over
An official's whislle blown
too quickly prevented an Ash
land second quarter score.
Medford had its back to its goal
as the period nearcd its close.
Stewart boomed for six yards
and the ball got away from
him. Dave Lewis nabbed the
pigskin on the 15-yard line and
fought into the end zone. Bur,
because of the whistle blast
the ball was ruled dead on the

lowed. Two plays later with the hall
on the Medford eight-yard line
the half ended.
In the first half neither team
netted much yardage. In the

them on the 12. An Ashland
fumble recovered by Don Wil
son gave Medford the ball on
the Grizzly 18 but the Bruins
held on their nine.
Medford moved in from mid-
field after an Ashland punt,
with the aid of a Bear penaltv
and a pass for 28 yards. Curt
Smith lo Esquivel. The pass
gave Medford first down on the
nine. Stewart bucked in two
plays to the six. On third down
Bill Collins carried to the two

well fell on it for Ashland to
wreck the Medford bid.
The Whirlwind took over on
the Ashland 30 after a Grizzly
punt. Two passes were incom
plete and Bruce Bertrand lost
four yards trying to pass. Then,
came the clulch fourth down
pass play, putting the ball on
the three.
Ashland had a net yardage
edge of 37 to 29 in the first
half. Early action was much in
Grizzly territory. But, a fum
ble recoverv bv Roger God-
dard in the Medford end of the
field, turned the advantage to
Ashland in the second panel.
Caps 82-Yard Surge
Medford out-yardaged the
Bruins 183 to 110 in the second
half.
Volh's touchdown was the. big
explosion of an 82-yard move
to Ihe goal. He gained four
yards from the 18 and Lewis
picked up seven. Terry Clark
went 12 yards on a pitch to the
Ashland 41. Two gains by Lewis
reached the 44. Then, Voth
broke to the right over the
scrimmage line, cut up the mid
dle, and was on his way to
the goal.
The tussle inaugurated tackle

Dick James May
Be NFL s Most
Underrated Back
WASHINGTON (UPI)-No. 47
on (he Washington Redskins
may be the National Football
League's most underrated back.
No. 47 belongs to litle Dick
James, the Tribe's veteran and
versatile halfback whose 175
pounds of muscle and 75 pounds
of heart.
After the first two games of
the season, James leads the club
in rushing yardage and punt re
turns and is second in kickoff
returns. He scored the key
touchdown in the Redskins' vic
tory over Los Angeles Saturday
night.
But statistics do not tell Ihe
story of James' value to Ihe
team. He is a relatively small
5-9 player with tremendous
pride and spirit. In eight years
of NFL wars, James has yet to
be injured, he seldom fumbles
and he manages to come up with
clutch play that often means the
diference between winning and
losing.

McKay Still j
Has Respect
For Sooners
LOS ANGELES (UPI) - John
McKay, the reigning "Coach of
the Year," is not buying any Ok
lahoma tales of woe as he look
ed ahead to his Southern Cali
fornia Trojans meeting t h e
Sooners in the television game
of the week here Saturday.
The Sooners will be given all
the respect due a school that an
nually fields one of the nation's
top football teams, McKay indi
cated Monday before the South
ern California Football Writers
meeting.
McKay listened attentively as
Oklahoma spokesman Har o 1 d
Keith hinted the 1963 edition of
the Sooners grid machine was
"slow" and had been oulgained
and outdowned by Clcmson in
their seasonal opener.
"I hope I never see a fast
learn if Oklahoma is slow," Mc
Kay said. "We know Oklahoma
is a very fine football team. And
it's the team that gets the most
points that wins, not the team
that runs up the statistics.
McKay was not too satisfied
wilh his club's 14-0 voctory over
Colorado but his dissatisfaction
was more over the playing con
ditions. A downpour at Boulder,
Colo., made it difficult for both
teams and deprived the Trojans
of the chance to demonstrate
whether they were the equal of
last year's national champion-
snip team.
The UCLA Bruins, badly burn
ed by one team from the slate
of Pennsylvania, hoped to do
better against a second. Coach
Bill Barnes said his club did
few things well against Pitts-
i burgh here last Friday.
But he was hopeful that a few
corrections might result in
better performance against the
strong Penn State club at Uni
versity Park, Pa.
"It seemed that somebody
was making a mistake on every
play against Pitt, Barnes said.
We knew Pitt was an outstand
ing team but we should have
done better.
Although he failed lo com
plele a pass, Carl Jones will get
the starting quarterback assign
mcnt again, Barnes said.

No. 1 quarterback.
Steve Juday, a lightweight 19

ing out junior letterman Dick
Proebstle of Canton, Ohio.
The decision, Daugherty said,
wasn't an easy one to make.
"Juday will start, and t w o
weeks ago that would not have
been so tough a choice to make.
But Proebstle has made more
progress in the last two weeks
than at any other time in his
career," Daugherty said.
"But the job is Steve's, and
if he keeps improving, as I'm
sure he will, he'll stay in there.
He's our No. 1 quarterback."
